The Barkley Marathons - one of the world's toughest ultramarathons, has been held annually in the Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee, since 1987.
The race is so brutal that, since the inception of the race, only 15 people have managed to finish. Runners are to run five 20-mile loops, within a 60 hour time limit and with more than 20.000m of elevation change.
The course is unmarked, no electronic devices are allowed and most of the race is off-trail.
Out There - A journey to the Barkley Marathons is the story of Belgian ultrarunner Karel Sabbe, who holds the world records on two of the most epic trails in the world: the 4279km long Pacific Crest Trail and the 3500km long Appalachian Trail.
How did setting these world records prepare Karel for a race as brutal as "the Barkley"? How did these adventures help Karel to find the necessary mindset to do well at this Spartan challenge?
Out There is a story of persistence, endurance and a passion for the great outdoors, and the film inspires the audience to reconnect with nature and to find courage for personal challenges.

Check out Heather "Anish" Anderson. I believe she still has the PCT unsupported record. Unsupported means nobody bringing you food, nobody providng you with shelter, no mailing food to you, not even a hitch into town to get food. Only you carrying everything and walking into town for food and back to the trail. When she broke the unsupported record, she also broke the record for a supported trail runner at that time. Yet, she just looks like an average woman.

Tennessee native here. I wanna start by saying im extremely impressed by anyone who even attempts a lap of this. I've been in these mountains hunting and hiking my entire 33 years of life and spring here is a rough time to be out in these hills. To do so coming from a completely different country is crazy impressive. At least im use to the weather, land and conditions here. You can literally go thru 3 seasons in 24 hours here as you kinda see in this video. I've been outside shirtless sweating in the day, have a tornado come that afternoon and the temp drop 50°F and snow start falling. We dont get regular snow here tho really. It's more ice then puffy snow. Now add on top of that physical exhausted from the elevation changes, and sleep deprivation and a time limit while navigating. that's a real recipe for pain. So im very impressed by your first attempt and hope you've now made it

Both your wife and Joe provide an incredible support system. I am blown by how humble you are and keep smiling at all hardships; you all three make an awesome team. I hope you are in the race in 2020 and I believe that you can team up with Gary and Grieg and become #16,17,18. - You need to get a sponsor... Solomon, Hoka, NorthFace and the rest, take notice!
Btw, what an incredibly well presented film with no fanfare whatsoever. Those of us who have been following the Barkley for years waited for the main 2012-race documentary for 3 years and then waited for Ginger Runner's film on Gary Robbins for 2 years as well. Your film is as professionally made as those and needs to be the feature film in this year's BFC.
