  • Nigeria experiences annual flooding, especially in coastal areas, but this year's floods are the worst in more than a decade. 1.4 million people had to flee their homes for camps set up on higher ground. But help is slow in arriving. Many roads and bridges are washed out.

As a Nigerian it is so sad to see the devastation that is solely due to corruption of our judicial system. They have the resources and funds to build a dam and fix/prevent these issues, but they would rather put the national budget and all foreign aid we've received in their pockets. I pray our next president will actually put effort into improving the quality of life for our people because this backwardness is tiring.

@@Biobele Please read the comment correctly and don't misquote me because nowhere did I state that is the CAUSE. Devastation to civilians is a consequence of flooding. And no, the flood isn't caused by "particularly heavy rainfall". Lagos state sits right by the Atlantic ocean and gets flooded every rainy season due to people building houses on sand-filled water that hasn't been allowed to settle & inadequate drainage systems. So tell me why Lagos is dry right now?
If you've been keeping up with the news, you would have also seen the clip questioning why Foreign aid is taking so long to reach Nigeria. It's not taking long to reach the country. The foreign aid has already been received and shared amongst members of the government (at whatever level).
Long story short, I stand by what I said.

You are correct. Nigeria is one of the richest countries on earth. The theft of its resources is criminal. They need to wise using its resources to build their country not the pockets of foreign corporations

The problem is its Nigeria. Corruption is the rule rather than the exception. 100 million for infrastructure will go into the pockets of a few government officials and 2 percent will actually be spent on underfunded poorly engineered projects. Money is not the problem, corruption is.

The rivers do not "overflow". It is people that go and build houses on riverbanks which had shrunk over time. If you respect the river and its territory, you can avoid such situations.

Climate change is not the cause of this flood it the release of the water from the Lagdon dam in Cameroon and the heavy rain falls, Nigeria needs to complete constructing the Dasin Hausa dam that was to have commenced in 1982. There are 17 dams in Nigeria but I am very baffled to find out that there are no dams in the south east of Nigeria. Why?

According to meteorological experts Nigeria could be experiencing El nino rainfall season
So the questions that arise are
    1. How will the rest of Africa be affected
Are we going to see similar flooding in Eastern, central and southern Africa?..
    And how should countries prepare?
In Eastern Africa some countries such somalia, parts of Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya are experiencing droughts on end
All the same African countries needs to stand with and support our Nigerian brothers and sisters

You cannot build on a floodplain except if you are planning to fish next on stilts in your bedroom. in the future.
