China's military maneuvers: A warning to Taiwan | DW News

  • Chinese State TV is reporting that dozens of Chinese fighter jets, carrying live missiles, have been conducting mock strikes in the airspace and water around Taiwan. The latest military drills have been described by Chinese military spokesman Colonel Li Xi as “strong punishment for the separatist acts of ‘Taiwan's independence forces’ and a stern warning against interference and provocation by external forces.” Taiwan, which is a self-governing island, has mobilized its military forces in response. The military drills come just days after Taiwan's new president, Lai Ching-te, was inaugurated and called on the mainland to stop making such threats.
Taiwan presents a real challenge to the United States, as keeping China at bay militarily embodies the triumph of American dominance in the Asia-Pacific region. Protecting Taiwan from a perceived Chinese threat, as well as competition with China on various economic, technological, and military fronts, are important policy goals for the United States. Washington official policy on Taiwan is one of "strategic ambiguity," which was put to the test when former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei in August 2022. Both politicians in Taipei and Beijing are unsure as to how the U.S. would respond if China were to invade Taiwan or if Taiwan were to declare its independence. In the first scenario, an American military response could potentially spark a war with China, while in the second, uncertainty as to whether the U.S. would come to Taiwan's aid could prevent Taiwan from declaring outright independence from China.

It was agreed at the ending of WWII that Japan had to surrender unconditionally and had to return Taiwan to CHINA.
Hence, the Constitutions of 🇨🇳🇹🇼 stipulate that mainland and Taiwan are part and parcel of CHINA ("一中 宪法" ).
Figuratively speaking, the " one CHINA" status quo at the Taiwan Strait is like one coin (一中) with two sides ... the obverse side (正面) is PRC🇨🇳 and the reverse side (反面) is ROC🇹🇼 .... in other words, two sides of the Taiwan Strait is one family (两岸一家亲).
The govt. of PRC🇨🇳, on the mainland, is the sole legitimate representative government of CHINA to the UN🇺🇳 .. whereas, the govt. of ROC🇹🇼, on the Taiwan island, was previously the representative govt. of CHINA to the UN🇺🇳 from 1945 but its legitimacy was terminated and was expelled from UN🇺🇳 in 1971.
So, I hope the govt of ROC🇹🇼 will accept the decision of the UN 🇺🇳 gracefully by starting to negotiate with PRC🇨🇳 for a peaceful reunification ..... rather than trying to take the unilateral action for "Taiwan independence" ....... and to cause another civil war in CHINA.

By that logic Kim's North Korea also has the right to take South Korea because both countryies occasionally talk about unity as a point of dialogue. So because they occasionally try to resolve problems, now Kim demands that it happen. Please the CCP party needs to grow up and stop acting like a bunch of toddlers totally unable to see the world from anything other than their own own perspective. You had a civil war because you had a serious disgreement. The reasons behind that disagreement have not gone away only grown. Taiwan is doing fantastic well on it's own and does not want to be in a family with the current regime in China. Even if the CCP made promises about keeping democracy - the Taiwanese are no fools and can see for themselves what will happen thanks to the experience of HK. If you're dad is a raging alcholic thug you know you need to look for a new family outside the bloodline, no matter how many times begs you to come home. China has expanded and shrunk many times since the unification of the 7 kingdoms under Shi, as have all other countries across the globe. Or are you going after Mongolia, Lao, and parts of Russia next?
The Swiss developmental psychologist Piaget in his 3 mountains experiment showed that most children prior to the age of 7-8 are unable to see the world from another persons perspective, some are more emotional developed and start earlier, some go through this process later and some adults never actually have this transformation and normally end up struggling in relationships. I think the way people in the extended CCP elite were raised - always taking down and never being questioned or made to justify themselves has created a narsissitic elite who are totally incapable of this basic human function. Look at your own behaviour (ie the way China treats it's poor and minorities) and ask yourself a simple question "what am we (CCP-China) doing to make no one want to be our friend including our own family". And don't look to countries like Iran, Russia and North Korea. Bullies always have people hanging onto them that would sell them down the river in a heart beat if it suited the cause ... don't believe me, well good luck we shall see.
I want to make it clear that I use the term CCP because I know there are many people in China who totally understand the Taiwanese desire for independence, and have a ton of empathy for Taiwan even if they are hurt by what it may actually mean. All I will say to them is wounds if dressed correctly and cared for can heal - but like all things it will take time.I grew up in Namibia when we splt from South Africa in 1990. I would have prefered to have stayed together - but now gladly admit it was the best thing Namibia ever did. The aparthied regime in power in South Africa made it impossible for the majority of Namibians to remain part of the Union and even those who had family in other parts of South Africa understood this and voted reluctantly for independence. The relationship healed over time with good neighbourly behaviour by South Africa, doing honourable things like returning the offshore islands and letting the people in the enclave of Walvisbay (Namibia's 2nd largest city and best natural harbour) vote and become part of Namibia in 1993. South Africa had no international obligation to do this as these were previous British territories but it was the right thing to do even if it was not in it's economic interest. Today most Namibians spend some time studying or working in South Africa and many South Africans come to Namibia to start businesses, go on holiday or retire. We joke that the two countries are like a couple that got divorced in a heat of anger but then when the dust settled realised that they do still really love each other and enjoy seeing the other suceed.
