  • Authorities in Nigeria are warning of a looming hunger crisis. The worst flooding for a decade has killed at least 600 people and left more than a million homeless. Even before the floods hit, the country was already battling high inflation and food shortages - and the UN had warned of catastrophic levels of hunger.

    The Nigerian government should be held accountable for this. It just breaks my heart how people living in these areas helplessly wait for this flood almost every year. The minister said it's water from God and the President of the country is mute.

    Well, in case of floods help gets delivered from air, so from planes. Current situation is... energy crisis, so also plane fuel is scarce and more expensive than usual. Plus, well, spare parts for planes are also porbably being resold , at times illegally across entire Africa to Russia that cannot purchase them legally as easily as it could in the past, hence a crisis impacting humanitarian relief flights is very real and may get even more acute overtime. Not to mention that pandemic and lockdown kept planes grounded and pilots jobless, hence many pilots have left this profession, so crew scarcity is very real and adds to other issues. If boats can be used locally, part of the solution would be using traditional, sailing- based methods of reaching affected areas. The funds for food relief and prices of food are another story. I know there is a movement of going back to tradtional, local , even ancient crops growing in both Africa and India and I would say that this is a correct thinking to prevent and alleviate such disasters in the future. Nigeria and other African countries should look for traditional edible plants that can be grown even in cities, even inside households not only in the fields and which can be harvested quickly. Asian countries have traditions of growing such plants indoors, so Africa can learn from their experience as well. Current fuel and fertiizliers crisis will have a global impact in such situation for next decade, so Nigeria and rest of Africa has to prepare for food shortages in case of floods and for very high food supplies costs on markets. In order to do so decreasing reliance on imported basic food products would be a good direction to go.

    Prayers for help. Water and foods and hope the community has a watchful event to make more higher ground to keep damages less. That's said twenty six states. We can't say total poor planning since it was debated for decades . ..it was once thought that our natural canyon was at least in part carved out for such ....so that seems as optional for not as deep trial in only a moderate logical thinking . Because to do such means more height in area and a release region toward larger water ..lined with a coating not affected by erosion, and possibly multi layer and guarding distances as safety ..sounds like a deep reservoir.. then keeping all the mudded land , that's a hard one.
    Seeing water is but one need and foods .. especially after floods and bacteria prone water. I think they need at least a few water towers. I remember the train used to hold transport like that.

    And as for crew shortage and Nigeria in particular, not sure how much of a common knowledge it is in Nigeria, but , in fact, in civilian food industry flights the majority of pilots were...Russian contractors. If any of them got drafted, since "partial moblization" was also targeting people living abroad but holding Russian citizenship, what Nigeria experiences is ....missing Russian pilots that could fly humanitarian food delivery flights to flood affected regions. This is why Nigeria can learn from Ethiopia that it's good to have its own, native pilots. Ethiopia out of necessity has based its domestic supply of pilots on females, with excellent results. Even military pilots from Ethiopia are females and they are excellent at their job. So Nigeria can think about future floods and train females to fly rescue and food delivery planes and choppers so that it would not have to rely on foreigners again if it comes to the worst. Since foreigners due to some issues in their country of origin may have to leave at any time without a warning.

    Why does the reporter fail to inform us exactly how “climate change” affects these floods and, by extension, the people. Is this the first flood to occur in the region? Maybe she can tell us who it is that told her that “climate change” was one of the contributors to the floods, or did she come up with that on her own? Inquiring minds want to know!

    • @Baddy187
      @Baddy187 Před rokem

      All these reports mention climate change the first chance they get. Never tell us anything about it, but they just drop the buzzword to keep it in people minds. Like floods and droughts never happened before in the countries that are prone to them. I am willing to wager that erosion, removing trees, redirecting river streams and the like is way more to blame than climate change.
