What has Nigeria done to prevent flooding? | Inside Story

- Northeastern Nigeria is seeing some of its worst flooding in years. Hundreds of thousands of homes have been destroyed.
The flooding has been made worse by seasonal rain and planned water release from a dam in neighbouring Cameroon.
Lagdo Dam is in northern Cameroon and was built in 1982.
Nigeria was supposed to build its own dam to offset the excess, but never finished it.
So, what's been the government's response?
Guests:
Suleiman Adamu - Nigeria's Minister of Water Resources.
David Arinze - Climate Activist and Renewable Energy Specialist.
Manu Lekunze - Teaching Fellow in Politics and International Relations at the University of Aberdeen and Author of ‘Complex Adaptive Systems, Resilience and Security in Cameroon’.

One thing I know about Nigeria there's definitely no government plan for sure
ha ha.. the same can be said about the UK right now...
@@milesinnz trust me the worst UK PM would rank amongst at least the top 5 Nigerian presidents. Thats how f*cked up that country is.
@@milesinnz Come on Miles, those are miles apart.
@@andreilyas1426 eh, do you not read the news ?? duh.. just had the shortest PM is British history... who single handed nearly destroyed the British economy in a few days ??? heck, even Nigeria does not perform this badly.. now tell me, what bit did I get wrong.. or don't you read the news ?
@@milesinnz this politicians don’t care about it’s citizens. The only thing they do is divide people.
The country brags to have the largest economy in Africa cannot Build and finish a Dam since 1982 as a result the country is flooded with water and people's life were lost. What a Shame??
I got more informations here about the flood issue than the Nigerian local news networks.
There are 27 states out of 36 states affected by the flooding in the country and the minister of water resources is chilling in Namibia..shame
Nigeria have a very poor government system
Just finish the Dam!!!! This is so embarrassing to the state of Nigeria
The Minister should be ashamed of himself. You are in “government” take responsibility. No strategy, no plan of action. Just excuses, no concrete solution. Blaming Cameroon for the problem is outrageous. Instead of the Minister explaining to us that one dam will not resolve the problem, why doesn’t the government build the dams that will be required stop the flood.
This disaster was avoidable.
God bless that Gentle man in Abuja, he has spoken the true. Shame on the Government. Corruption Corruption Corruption with Nigeria government, someone have pocket the infrastructure money 💰 🤑 💸 🙄
Useless packet of politicians has in Nigeria, every time they tour Europe and America wasting national funds overseas in nations that more developed and still advancing. But they can't develop their own nation and build infrastructures to prevent these kinds of disaster. Shame.
Absolutely nothing. Useless government.
Thats how the Hausa-Fulani Oligarchy govt of Nigeria has been poorly managing the country human and material resources for years.
Nigeria is always in planning and consulting phase but never transitions to action and implementing phase. A show of shame and people are dying.
Don't mind him, planning and consulting for 4 years. Shame on Mr Minister
Lake Chad was drying up for years. Why are the excess flood waters not being diverted to that lake which was the natural reservoir for that entire NE region of Nigeria and NW region of Cameroon?
@Tranquility TenThousand And long overdue, failures of the Eastern, south eastern UNITY to change things to benefit their own peoples too.
Because it will have to flow upstream. Almost impossible!
@Tranquility TenThousand not really, it’s actually because it’s uphill, funny, how you talk like that but didn’t even know simple info
My question is What Dam has Nigerian government built in the last 13 years?
What then is the purpose of a dam?
The government has failed In all directions. Imagine numbers of houses submerged. A house owner waking up one morning and turn homeless. It's very painful.
@@moharshad6882 That much pressure can easily flow up hill. Stop looking for an excuse and hold your leaders accountable.
the issue is Lagdo Dam in Cameroon Causing
Devastating Flooding in Nigeria, Over 300 Dead
Communities in Benue, Adamawa, Taraba,
Anambra, Rivers, Bayelsa, Nasarawa and other
states have also been devastated by the flooding
that has destroyed many homes and lives in Kogi
state.
In 1977, construction of the Lagdo Dam, located in
Northern Cameroon began and was completed in
1982.
Initially, the Cameroonian and Nigerian
Government's had agreed to build two dams so
that when excess water is released from the
Cameronian dam, it will be contained by the
Nigerian dam which would be two and a half times
bigger and won't result in flooding
However, the Nigerian Government agreed to
construct the Dasin Hausa Dam in Adamawa State
to lessen the impact of any potential flooding from
the Lagdo dam in Cameroon.
But regrettably, the Dasin Hausa dam has not been
completed since 1982 and this has led to the
yearly flooding in Nigeria.
How far is the dam to be complete? I hope this is a wake up call for them.
Thanks for your clear explanation..Nigerian Government 🤦🏽♀️
This is just plain stupid. Build the dam, you will save money. god bless
Ha-ha-ha 😭🚀😂
So sad 😭 to see this happening with all the natural resources in Nigeria too much corrupt politician not running the country properly
this criminal politician need to be in Jail. hope he do not come back to Nigeria. Minister with no idea
The minister is talking rubbish
Nigeria's failure to build a critically dam is alarming and suspicious. Shameful leadership!
The statements from the Government minister is so annoying.
Government disaster
I will vote against this government we nigerians need change like Italy
Climate change strategy includes adaptation and mitigation strategies, which must be implemented to tackle climate physical risks.
Great conversation.....looking from the outside in, seems like the "C" word corruption may be a part of the blame. As one of the guest mentioned, this will happen again. It takes years to build a dam.
Same with corruption in the West!
Mr Minister you see your shame? Your shame dey shame the world
Our leaders do not care until it affects them directly. I just hope they'll learn and take proactive measures.
This minister should be arrested
Fulani Minister you should resign for utter failure and stop giving excuses.. You have no Competence and stop stealing the crude oil from the Niger Delta without developing the region. APC government Resign in disgrace!!!
Please this man is not fit to be a minister
The minister blame the flooding on a whole lot of factors other than the dam- unprecedented rains, non-cooperation by Cameron, etc If the dam was the solution in Cameron what makes him think the dam won't be the solution in Nigeria.
And I love how Mr. Lekunze enlightened the minister and also made him know that either him or his successor would come to say what he said now next year 2023.
THIS IS SOOOO EMBARRASSING! Do these Nigeria "leaders" ever think abt how the world sees their country? But no, they'll happily vacation in well-kept countries. Imagine a small country like Cameroon advising us abt a common sense issue that should've been resolved decades ago. How I wish that water would flow right into Aso Rock. I am so ashamed of this so-called "Giant of Africa". What have we even accomplished compared to other African countries?? We are barely midgets!
So what are you doing to solve the issues My government official. You didn't answer the question.
Well said Mr. Lekunze. This is a poor governance issue principally from the side of Nigeria.
Sending prayers God please dry up the Land of Nigeria. 🇳🇬 America Help Deliver Aide for these families

@@HGBTV I do so every two weeks for the last 23 years sir
Alright...
The simple reason they couldn't do the dam is simply because they wont see money from it. And if they do it to generate light, it wont favour some people as well
Mr Minister Sir....where is the Dam???
This minister should be ashamed to be rattling this nonsense.. "its all over the place'..and thats his response..OMG
Omg these so called officials are a pure embarrassment.
Minister is even out of the country. He should be be on the ground and see how people are suffering. Resign if you can’t deliver!
So, the Nigerian Minister of Water Resources is saying that from 1977 when the agreement was signed with Cameroon, to build our own dam on our side in Nigeria through 1982, when Cameroon opened their own dam for operations to now, 2022, Nigeria has not yet gotten the design of the dam on our side right? We are talking of 47 and 40 years respectively here. The truth is that successive governments in Nigeria from 1977 through to now have not done anything about our own dam and the citizens are facing the consequences of the lapses of these successive governments including the current one. Too bad indeed!!! By the way, in 1977, Nigeria was busy with hosting FESTAC 77!!!
The way this Aberdeen guy is talking Ah, well, God will answer our prayers for good leadership. Uncle minister will be defending as if this started yesterday. it's well
Yes beating around the bush .Look at all the silly minister covering up
Kanu Lekunze God bless your acumen for speaking sense to my country leader. The government of the day have no plant for the Nigerian citizens that is why Rural/Urban, City planning is not in the agenda of the minister (he was just talking of dam, dam as if it is all he knows). Those water could be rechanneled to cities and deserts that are dry but nothing is being done. All we hear here in Nigeria is Cameroon Dam, denying the fact of climate change and shifting the blame to Cameroon. What is our government doing to cub climate change? a question to ask.
Mhhhh!!!! When the floods hit KZN in South Africa, Nigerians were rejoicing and being vocal about a curse on South Africans being punished by God because they are xenophobic. I wonder how they describe the flooding in their land (in some of their states). My sincere condolences to those people who lost their loved ones. May God Almighty comfort them
That's How useless Nigeria Govt.
I like the inside story based in Uganda
Has the usa still got that weather machine that makes black clouds. They still have the earth quake machine..
What for?
The president is yet to visit any of the states affected by flood to see things himself.
African Union must be deployed to help the people.
No Excuses Nigeria!!!!
That's minister doesn't know what he is saying he is just there to eat his own cake .
Unless minister and useless government always signing mou and blaming previous government. Cameron to inform you why cannot you thives not protect your people. The government is doing nothing
LOVE MOTHER !
Nigerians
1) How are you voting?
2) Are you asking questions to the next president, if he will build Nigeria's own dam to curtail this flood in the next 3 years?
Or
Will we wait and Pray to God again??
Time will tell
If this was the worst flood in a decade and Nigeria is promed to disastrous flooding, didn't the government have 10 years to build a sufficient dam? What are preparations for torrential rains and floods. All the lives, foods, farmlands, housing, livelihoods are gone. The people can't reach out for help so the government should immediately go to them. This is another heart breaking event. Only God knows the beginning and the end. We can only pray for these people and for leaders worldwide to do the right thing and have a conscious. Many leaders are in it for the money, gain fame or notoriety. but what will it profit a man to gain the world and lose his soul? 😭😭
Nigeria government please help the people
How can election hold with this situation?

With so many powerful Prophets, none of them could foresee the floods?
And still none of them can tell us when the floods will stop!
They are all false prophets, they r prophets to the savings you may have in your bank accounts🤔May God rebuke each one of them
The important question is why God/Allah allowed too much rain to fall which is wrecking havoc. God/Allah did not find it necessary to inform his prophets.
What makes you think they didn't forewarn the people? What makes you think they don't know when it will cease?
@@GoldenLarkVoice If they knew, they would have announced it. None of them, absolutely none, knows anything.

The dam has two countries how can see that problem between the two sides it goes solution anytime. Cameron released water of nigeria shouts everytime they sit this issue they can solive like this problem, we welcome any dialogue about the two countries i wish them good agreement good prosperity and sustainable peace.
Can't the Cameroon gov't release water over a period of time instead of just opening the dam once
Nope....doesnt work like that when opening dams. Nigerian govertment needs to work and stop being lazy.

State Governors are 90 percent of Nigeria's problem, the federal government did its part by providing an ecological fund worth billions of $ to each and every state yet it is looted by various Government officials. the sooner we masses hold Governors accountable the better. That is why we have division of power
Exactly, state and local government have direct impact negative/positive on Nigerians. Nigerians need to take state and local government seriously.
Natural disatster response is the federal government's responsibility. Also it is not the state government's responsibility to build a dam.
@@Bio54633 we just read on the news Lagos is building a new airport, is airport state government responsibility? States have a lot of power, sooner we stop making excuses for them the better we'll be
@@Bio54633 You are absolutely right. Nigeria problem is federal government.
@@hendrixvirus It is not about making excuses. An airport has nothing to do with a natural disaster. The respective responsibilities of the federal and state governments are set out in law. The disaster management agency is a federal government agency.
By the way, why does Cameroon not route their dam water via another channel...they must.take responsibility for the water they release into Nigerian water basins since it continues to cause havoc regardless of Nigeria's perceived irresponsibility or inaction. Cameroon must be stopped, charged & made to take responsibility for their action since it's causing devastations.
Sweetheart they are doing the best in their national interest . because they can generate electricity and control their flood so I think the real blame should be on the Nigerian government for not keeping their end of the bargain
@@davidfamous4353 so there was agreement with Nigeria for Cameroon to dump their unwanted reservoir of water into Nigerian waters to the degree it destroys lives & properties?
What kind of unbelievable idiocy is that? What suicidal folly-decision is that, so incapacitating it ravages a people like a tsunami?
Minister the question is what has the government done to curb the flood and support those who were displaced ? You have not answered the question but just beating about the bush to avoid the question and cover the government. May God answer you people

there have been many programs on Pakistan... why does Pakistan need to be the only country in the news ???? ask Allah to do something...
Idiot
😂😂😂 why?
Poor town planning. No Canals and relevant dams in place. Build also gutter with cover leading to other riverways. Why is no one telling the truth? The Cameroun govt. told the Nigerian govt. in 1977 that they were building a dam (completed in 1982) and there will be overflows every ten years therefore build a dam to receive the overflow. The Nigerian govt. agreed and never built the dam and canals to receive the flow, instead went about to celebrate Festac 77. Every ten years the Cameroun dam fills up and needs to be released. The reason the Nigerian govt. is keeping mom is simply that the contract agreement to build a counterdam in 1977 was not met and they cannot win a court case.
Urban and regional town planning is the basics of construction. Then the Architect then the Quantity surveyor then the builder then the Estate management team. Poor urban and regional town planning in flooded areas - With no Canals, dams, reservoirs, gutters with covers etc.
Why not build your dam in Nigeria 🇳🇬 and stop putting blame on other people.
