  • The Victorinox Wine Master is new take on the "Picnic Knife" type of knife. It is built on the 130 mm knife frame that first introduced in the Wenger "Ranger" series of knives but it is the first knife that is exclusive to the Victorinox Trademark on that frame.

    I am always pleased to see a new collection of unusual and different types of knives appear in your videos. So many other knife channels review one or two kinds of knives and are fanboys of a few brand names. Then they pick apart anything they find flawed with other knife models they review on their channel. I know from seeing video reviews the knives they swoon over are not as perfect as they say they are. That is an indication they have someone catering to them. They seem to get every new model before anyone else. When you post videos the same channels use many of your original themes. The trouble they have is; you create so many they can’t keep up to the diversity you provide in your video themes. That makes me give your channel the highest 5 Star rating in my opinion. I think your Top Hat is a great indication of being a Wizard of knife knowledge few others possess. I added the Victorinox cheese master to my wish list of knives. I enjoy seeing the themes you present of the ones you collect. I have a few of both Victorinox and Swiza knives. I can see how addicting they become as collectors.

      I am humbled by your kind words. I try to be objective and as I have been approached on occasion to do reviews for companies, it tends to fall apart as soon as they realize I'm going to give my honest take and not try to boost their sales through unwanted praise.
      If they believed in their product then they should welcome an honest opinion (and that is all it is my opinion) And I've seen more than one person say "thanks for the warning! That knife is so cool I just ordered it, I can live with that issue!"

      Thanks I saw a couple videos on line but they were kind of short and seemed more like a sales pitch. I'd rather let people know what they are getting for their money. These knives are from from inexpensive. Definitely not for everyone!

    Now that is a classy picnic knife!
    Victorinox put a lot of thought into their knife designs.
    I have been looking for an Opinel No10 but never see them, for an everyday carry that also makes a good picnic knife, I can't think of anything better than the No10 but the wine master is for when you want to show off.

      If you're a SAK fan and you like wine, you should consider this an investment and something you can hand down to your kids! Yes it is expensive. So was the Skipper pro and so are many other Victorinox knives.

    You could also punch four holes in the back and join them up with two vertical slits making belt loop like on the commercially available ones. That way you'd still have the flap to close it.

    Just couldn't get away till the live show was over...so here I am. Very cool knife Tobias, again excellent Victorinox engineering and quality but I'm still scratching my head as to why it sells for over $150? I would certainly concede somewhere just under 100 tops, but wow. It is a beauty though.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  Před 3 lety +1

      I think it competing with genuine Laguoile knives and Sommelier tools and is priced accordingly. They only come in Walnut or Olive wood. And it is the only Vic with the corkscrew. Similar Vic knives that specialty tools are also sickingly expensive. I recall the Wenger Alinghi sailing knife was priced similarly and share many parts with other Ranger series knives! The 111 mm Skipper Pro is right at the $100 range and most of its parts are found in other SAKs. No doubt about it. some of the specialty knives reach crazy town prices!

    That Wine Master is definitely a perfect knife for a picnic. Victorinox did a smart move doing a collaboration with a wine master. Great looking knife in the olive wood.
    Any chance sometime this year you will do a video on the space themed knives you showed in the intro.
    I know you said you were going to concentrate your videos this year mainly on the Swiss Army style knives. You showed some very large knives that could be concealed when wearing a tuxedo that couldn't in a bathing suit. Would like to see a video on some of those large knives.
    Really liked the video and got to learn something as usual in your videos.

    I wouldn't sharpen the blade all the way to the handle 'cause it makes contact there when you close it. I really like this model despite the price. I've taken it on road trips a few times (if you throw in the inexpensive Victorinox serrated folding paring knife, you'll really have everything you need for food prep), but mostly keep it on my coffee table for snacks and beverages while I watch TV or have guests. I know I'll keep using it for the rest of my life and pass it on to someone after that, so I'm not worried about the price anymore. I always found the corkscrews without an assist to be frustrating to deal with.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  Před 3 lety +2

      That's a good point about the blade. This knife is truly a piece of functional art and built to last. It could easily be passed down to future generations.

    Is it overpriced? It depends on your preferences. To me it is just what I wanted. This opens every whine bottle I’ve tried it on with no fuss. I’ve tried other Victorinox wine openers and have had difficulties with everyone. This works, trust me. The two-stage leverage tool will release the cork with no effort. The main locking blade is what I use for food-prep or as a steak knife when I am privileged to fulfill that purpose.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  Před 3 lety +1

      It does have a price tag! Victorinox wasn't setting out to compete against the $10-$20 waiters tool with this knife. This knife is competing with the Genuine Laguoile knives and Sommeliers. And I agree with you -- this knife is flat out amazing. Yes, many will see it is overpriced. I see this as work of functional art and something worthy of handing down to others!

    That's a nice knife, and if I didn't already own a couple of Victorinox "forester" knives and more than one waiter's friend I'd be tempted. I was curious about the legality of carrying such a knife in the UK as the blade locks and it has a cutting edge of more than 3", both of which will get you into trouble here. I did a quick search and found that you can legally carry something like this if you have "a good reason". The consensus was, if the knife is in a picnic basket with other picnic items, and you're clearly going for a picnic, that's fine. Otherwise ... illegal.

      @mrseuff617 Před rokem +1

      How do I tell if it’s a counterfeit

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  Před rokem

      @@mrseuff617 , usually by close inspection of the knife and the content of the box. Does the paperwork look in order? What about the leather sheath. Are the markings on the blade the same as other Victorinoc 130mm knives from the same time period. If you have a known authentic knife of the same pattern then it is relatively simple to spot a fake.
      These are little harder as the wood handles will vary from knife to knife. But you could check the red shield to see if it the same shade of red as other 130 mm. My bet is your knife is just fine if you bought it from a reputable or authorized seller. My only caveat would be all bets are off of it being legit if you found it on AllliExpress. AlliExpress is like buying a Rolex from a car trunk in an poorly lit New York City alley. They are known for selling counterfeits of just about anything under the sun.
      I personally do not trust the Victorinox Sellers in Russia or China. I never quite see how they are selling so much lower than other retailers. (But I trust them more that anything coming out of AlliExpress)
      But if you have the box, the papers, the sheath and the knife and if you bought it from an authorized dealer, you scored a great knife at a fantastic price. Otherwise, just give it the once over and compare it to other or similar Vics.

      I'm sure many people share your opinion. Many say the same about the Compact. And I know for a fact you can get a decent waiter's tool capable of pulling a cork for $15. I think this knife is designed to compete with the Laguoile Sommelier Tools coming out of Theirs, France. In which case, it is compares well. (and many folks will also tell you straight up the Laguoile knives and water tool's are over priced!) Even at a substantial discount, I had to think twice about this one. My most expensive Victorinox to date!
