  • @accbcb
    @accbcb Před 2 lety +445

England started the game on the front foot, blowing Italy away - they were totally caught out/off guard. However, the early goal was England detriment.
When we scored, we then defended for what felt like 87 minutes. The shift in mentality was clear to see and from about the 25th minute I was saying Italy are going to score. This was extremely frustrating to watch.
Don't get me wrong, England reached a final. Brilliant, great achievement but we're finding way too many excuses for Southgates negative mentality. Yes, Italy are a very good team, unbeaten but we're just as good, if not better on paper.
Italy then started to dominate as we slipped into the shadows trying to cling on to the 1-0 lead. In my opnion, if it weren't for Pickford, we'd have been buried and embarrassed.
As a fan, watching England take the lead then shrivel into defence - it was embarrassing to watch. We've clearly got the talent and ability and it was wasted. If we were going to defend at least we should have been pressing and countering but none of that was happening.
I don't understand why Mount started on the left too? Also, I love Harry Kane, world class finisher but he was shockingly bad. Coming way too deep not closing and just jogging (well not even jogging, just pattering) from side to side.
There was no determination to win. It was like we'd scored and then hid, scared - where's the "lions"? Lions don't run and hide. Absolutely frustrating to watch.
Southgates got the final wrong, he has to take the blame, we should have beaten Italy, or he should have at least changed formation or players.
Kane was easily dominated by Bonucci and Chiellini. No runners in behind - Shaw and Trippier no longer bombed forwarded like they did in the first 3 minutes. Had they continued that Bonucci and Chiellini would have been stretched, we seen the desperation from Chiellini pulling Saka down flat after we went past. To me that showed the difference, the things Italy were willing to do to win. You can't play soft against Italy, you have to press and be aggressive, they have too much experience in this competition.
As I was watching it was clear to see. Call it hindsight, I call it reality, call it whatever excuse you want but Mount should have gone at half time for Rashford, even Grealish to draw in fouls and frustrate the Italians. Rashford to make the runs in behind. Also Kane should have gone just after Italy scored for Sancho or Rashford. Sterling as a false nine, with Sancho on the right if you've got Rashford on the left then to me your going cause the Italians problems in behind. Kane was absolutely useless. Extremely disappointed.
Grealish would have caused problems too, his ability to keep the ball, draw in fouls and link play would have frustrated the Italians - we seen it as soon as he did come on but it was too late at that point.
I hear or its a good experience, it's progression, it's an achievement - yes and your right but we were 1-0 up for crying out loud. If we lost fighting and trying to win on the front foot, then fine I'd be happy with that - but to be 1-0 up and defend pretty much straight away - I'm not having that as a fan with this bunch of players. You can find excuses all you like to defend Southgate but his mentality is extremely negative, your not going to be the best if you play scared. You don't win battles in your own half you win them in theirs on the front foot.
In my opnion after seeing England's woeful performance the best team won - Italy pressed and looked more hungry. They were fearless, took risks and were willing to fight.
Had we won that on penalties it would have been shocking. Boring boring, England. We have a bunch of very talented players and we play like Burnley (no offence - tbh Burnley play better).
How many teams would leave Grealish out most the tournament? The most dazzling player on the ball? Keeps it well, draws in fouls and has the ability to go past players and create goals.
How many managers would leave Sancho out the competition?
I know we've got some unbelievable players but we didn't see them. Southgate didn't show the potential of these talents, he didn't represent them. This to me was our best chance. Italy didn't even qualify for the last World Cup and they win the Euros - so why are we okay with Southgates performance? We can't keep waiting. Like I said don't get twisted I understand the achievement but the final was abysmal.
We we're dominated and ended up finishing runner up - to me that's a failure. Finish runner up, fair enough if you do it as warriors, as lions. Id understand if we tried and we were beaten fair and square but to just sit back and let Italy come is weak and cowardice - we should have stayed on the front foot when Italy were on the ropes, for at least the next 20 minutes after we scored to see how Italy would cope.
One last thing, we're going on about the penalty shootout. We lost the game from the moment we scored and sat back. Penalties are purely luck at this level - If the goalkeeper decides to dive the same way, you miss, especially with man mountain Donnarumma. Hats off to who stepped up with the penalities and Pickford was sensational but we lost this after we scored the first goal and sat back.

Blowing Italy away? Italy just started slow, let the guard down and the goal woke them up. From then on it was essentially one sided with England showing small bouts of possession, but all the main men were shutdown. Italy's tactics and ability to read the game were just too much for England. Had Mancini a better selection of strikers up front it would be a different story. Couldn’t agree more about Kane. Pressing as a team starts with the striker and when we have Harry Kane jogging side to side when Bonucci or Chiellini have the ball at their feet 5 yards away from him it allows the Italians time and space to build attacks. Kane is the one of the best strikers in the world on the ball and in front of goal but off the ball he is one of the worst. You could sense the frustration of players like Phillips and Henderson who came beyond Kane in the press to try and cause the Italians problems off the ball. Makes me wanna pull my hair out.

"I don't think England would've gone to the final if they'd gone punch-for-punch with some of the nations that they'd come across along the way." Are you having a laugh, Gary? Just in case everyone forgot who England played in this tournament, let me refresh your memory: Croatia, Scotland, Czech Republic, Germany, Ukraine, Denmark, Italy. Aside from the Ukraine match, every single game was a nervy experience, and it clearly didn't need to be. Germany and Italy fielded their weakest teams in some years. Nobody wants to admit it, but Italy were on their knees against against Austria. Austria simply ran out of gas. Even so, the Austrian backups, who nobody can name, very nearly came back from 2-0 down in ET to tie the match. This England team should've run riot against the smaller teams, winning by 3, 4 or even 5 goals. But no. Southgate is "pragmatic," AKA a certain scared word used to talk about cats. This was THE chance to win a big trophy boys and girls. All but one match at home, at Wembley (which was above the allotted capacity, BTW). Get any hopes of the 2022 WC out of your mind right now. Germany and France will be revamped. Belgium will be amped up because it's the last chance of the "golden generation" to win something. Portugal and Brazil will be looking for redemption. Oh, and Italy will be even better. On top of that, Messi has the monkey of not winning a trophy with Argentina off his back. Seeing as how there's no way England get lucky with the draw for a third time running, does anyone legitimately expect to beat any, if not more than one of those teams?

England started the game very positively and got the early goal which was great but then for some reason they just got deeper and deeper and just sat back. Compared to other games Sterling was very quiet & it was so frustrating at times watching him when he just did to much on the ball instead of looking to play that final ball. Second Kane just looked lethargic, slow, and always was looking to go down. As for the Subs all the commentators said they would make an impact but yet again failed to really do anything. As for the penalties you should have had more seasoned professionals taking them or at least get the young ones to sort out their penalty technique.
As for the future, I don't see England making the final in the World Cup 2022 because it will be so hot and humid like in the first game here in the group stages. Yesterday was probably the best chance England were ever going to get to win a Trophy.

I do have a nagging feeling that he is too cautious and not making the most of the talent in the squad, which is a worry but we have still surpassed expectations during this tournament. Will be interesting to see if Southgate reflects and recognises that an alteration in approach needs to happen to take England another step forward. We have never had a squad as united as they are now and that is down to Southgate to thank for that.

You played all games at Wembley. Most teams had to travel during the whole tournament around Europe, yet you surpassed expectations? Oh come on you had to win this. Your approach to the game was the worst you could have taken! You parked the bus for more then 100 minutes. How you can protect a manager that plays like that with such players is hard to explain. You may have created the modern football but seriously your arrogance, your disrespect, your mentality is shown in your results.
