    As much as it pains me, Burley for one of the few times in his punditry career, is spot on. Here's the deal, if you're going to go down, go down with all you bullets fired. Don't leave any ammo in the chamber. Southgate made a decision at some point to go pragmatic and conservative....and it got him to the finals. He went by the if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The problem was this squad had more to give. He had more bullets than he used. In the finals you can't leave Rashford and Sancho on the bench and bring them on in the 120th minute. The move that perplexed me was Saka for Mount. Not that Mount shouldn't have been replace, Saka wasn't the choice. Grealish should have been the option. By bringing on Saka, he couldn't then take him off for Sancho or Rashford. So he waited and once he made the decision to play for penalties the deal was sealed. Bottom line is Burley is correct. Southgate played it safe and tight. They played NOT to lose instead of to win. And, given their history in Penalties, it was a doomed decision to play for the shootout.

    Rephrase: England didn’t play with fear… their manager set them up out of fear, and didn’t allow the players to get a grip of the game… 5 at the back wasn’t required against Italy… this was the time for bravery in selection, positivity in the tactics, and playing to the strengths of the squad which he hasn’t done all tournament in fairness, albeit we made the final… First final since 1966, at home, with a nations tails up and on a feel good wave, he had to be way more forward thinking and capitalise on that! Setting up with 3 centre backs, only two in midfield and Sterling as the only outlet on the counter basically gave Italy a passport to our 18 yard line every time they got possession, while not having to worry what was coming back at them the other way… and by the time Southgate realised this it was already 1-1. By then he’s having to make yet another reactive decision rather than a proactive one much earlier! On the flip side, Italy tried to win the game throughout, and deserve their victory… no blame attached to the penalty takers, even though Rashford really dropped a chance to give England great momentum, I feel Gareth was playing for this from the start, and should be held accountable!

Italy deserved winners

      @JamesFoxx Před 2 lety +3

      @@colinward4592 I can totally understand if you have a lack of attacking talent or forward options in a squad, but we are blessed to the hilt! And the whole tournament he’s squeezing 2 to 3 positions max out of all them players, when he should have been building a team and tactical base around 4-5 of them and looking to dominate teams on the front foot… not comparing players/teams but you should always play to your strengths with the cards you are dealt… Spain in their dominant period had 6 or 7 of the best attacking midfield/ball playing midfield players in the world, they often used a false 9 or sacrificed wingers to get the likes of Silva, Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Busquets, Alonso etc into their team and it worked wonders! There’s no reason why we couldn’t have lined up with a Mount/Grealish/Foden/Bellingham in a 3 in midfield with a Rice or Phillips behind and then another two out wide from Sancho, Sterling, Rashford, Saka or Grealish/Foden… and as for this 3 at the back business, f’k my life 🥺🤦🏻‍♂️

      Perfect explanation. Southgate has been BLESSED with an easy run of fixtures in the World Cup & Euro's and has come unstuck as soon as he faces a half-decent side because he's not even a half-decent manager. He's a good bloke but no mid-table PL side would hire him. Southgate's philosophy is that he is too scared to lose rather than willing to risk a win. Put Mancini in our dugout and we steamroll to the trophy. Another good batch of England players will fade away under a poor manager.

      Did anyone else find Southgate's reaction to the early goal very strange (just stood there with hands in pockets and never cheered or smiled). From that moment on I knew England would lose and sure enough it wasn't long before we reverted to tactics of old by dropping back and switch to defensive mode. You can't let a side like Italy just come at you and dominate the mid-field and I am surprised it actually went to penalties. As for the penalty taking fiasco, who in their right mind at the very last minute would bring on two young players who hadn't kicked a ball in the game just so they could take penalties.... it just made no sense to many of the top team managers who watched the game. There was also a string of top talent on the bench which Southgate didn't bring on to try to swing the tempo of the game back to England's favour, he just let the Italian's take control and this is reflected in the ball possession ratings at over 65%+ for Italy. It was if the penalty shootout was Southgate's game strategy from the beginning, maybe that's why he never celebrated England's goal. The player's did their best against a good Italian side but I can't help feeling they had more to give if only Southgate had been more positive with his strategy.

    England was abysmal from the second half. After seeing Italy slowing getting back into the game, I was expecting Southgate to bring on Sancho, Grealish and Foden to change the tempo and get aggressive, since sitting back was not helping. But I was infuriated when they were brought in solely for the penalties. Anyone can score or miss a penalty. It has nothing do with a player's skill. Players like Rashford and Sancho are players with skill and pace, who should've been brought on earlier and made to stretch the defense and get behind the Italians. In the penalties, I would've expected Sterling, Grealish and Shaw along with Maguire and Kane for the first five. In short, England deserved to lose. We wasted the talent we had on the bench our ability to control the game. We had the players to beat the Italians but squandered everything. We simply refused to play football. The Italians deserved it.

      Sure fine by the rest of us it's the next step in the English cycle of failure that's been going on for 56 years. Sack the manager

      They only have aspirations of going home😂😂. They will go to Qatar and then say I want to go home. They will be knocked out in the group stages. 😂😂😂

      @@relupo2446 ordinarily yes, but he had a home final, no travel, no injuries and chose to play with 30% possession behind the ball

      You guys need to check yourself, till yesterday looked like already over, now you talk like "always the same issue", ofc we can't with southgate blablabla
      The main reason england lost is because the "it's coming home" hype just backfired you.

    After he made the decisive penalty save, Donnarumma was as cool as he was after conceded after only 3 minutes

    Italy and England was the last 2 countries anyone would've expected to reach the final most people thought Italy would've lost to Belgium in Quarter-finals and most people thought England would've lost to Germany in R16

      You've joined France as a nation which has won it twice. One more to go to equal Germany and Spain. England just failed to join, say, Greece and Denmark who have both won it once. They remain in the same group as Luxembourg, Iceland, Gibraltar etc. who have never won it.

    Shaka Hislop was right after the game against Germany. The English players invite pressure after scoring a goal and try to score on the counter; you cannot win the tournament like that. And he was criticised by Frank LeBeouf.

      Frank LeBeouf is too opinionated who thinks of himself as an expert genius.

    Very disappointing performance by England and the quality of their last 3 penalties were just embarrassing. It wasn't going to come home by itself. We needed to bring it home but we bottled our chance
