The only mistake England made was sitting back after the first 20mins. They should have gone out and tried to kill off Italy, but they let Italy take over and then dominate.

I said after 30 minutes - "we can't do this for the entire game, we're asking to concede...get up the pitch, stop being so damned negative". This view that it was wrong to submit the younger players to the pressure of taking penalties is sheer nonsense. A 19 year old is an adult. In England/UK you can join the army at 16. Then at 18 you can- and are- deployed to frontline duties on the battlefield. So that is real pressurre in life threatening circumstances and the war-mongering English have no qualms about this. Rice / Philips can’t do that the way Grealish can. That’s worth a lot to a team trying to defend a lead. There’s more to defending that just tackling. ESPN are the only pundits not giving Southgate a pass and I commend them. Southgate completely butchered this final. From the starting 11, to the team's mentality, to his unwillingness to adjust, to his late substitutions, to his penalty choices. Just horrid. And yes I know England scored in part because of the width created from the 2 wing back set up but you saw what happened after Italy settled in around the 20th minute or so. They just completely dominated. Because England didn't have enough quality on the pitch. To hold the ball. To counter attack. To get the ball out of their 1/3. 5 defenders AND two defensive mids. With all the attacking quality England had on the bench. Disgraceful.

    • @daleviker5884

Southgate is the darling of the woke set, so of course the media are going to give him a free pass. He doesn't deserve credit for reaching a final, because given the squad at his disposal, the home ground advantage, and having the easy side through the luck of the draw, it is the minimum he should have achieved. And once in the final, he was practically gifted a 1-0 advantage, but he played not to lose rather than playing to win. And if he had to virtue signal with his choice of penalty takers, he should have at least put Rashford and Sancho on in extra time to get them warmed up and into the rhythm of the game. And putting so much pressure on Saka was ridiculous. The most that can be said of him is that other managers in the past have been as bad if not worse, but that is little consolation. This was England's big chance, and largely due to their manager, they blew it.

The problem with these pundits is that they're resigned to "soccer" matches going the way they've gone for the past 50 years. The rules need to change if this sport is going to progress. There's pros and cons to the golden goal scenario but the pros outweigh the cons. In any case, too many international matches go to penalties under the rules as they are. I'm of a mind of reducing the size of the pitch, first of all, and then reducing the size of the squads to 9 v 9 in the first period of Extra Time and then 7 v 7 in the second phase before resorting to a penalty shootout. I'd also enlarge the size of the goal to a ten foot crossbar. Am I completely crazy?

England's record in tournaments under Southgate:
Wins: Tunisia, Panama, Colombia (PK), Sweden, Croatia, Czech Rep, Germany, Denmark, Ukraine
    Losses: Belgium, Croatia, Italy (PK)
Most of their wins were against average teams or fading teams (Croatia, Germany)

Sancho is a fantastic speedy dribbler that plays for Dortmund and can be an asset for England as a right forward. He’s not England’s best player.

For all the talk about Italy “outplaying” England, it’s worth noting that Italy’s equaliser came from a set piece goalmouth scramble where the ball bounced kindly for Bonucci to get a tap in after Pickford saved the initial attempt from Chiellini.
England just didn’t do enough to win the game.
Folks should also note that unlike teams like Italy, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, etc, England don’t yet have a clearly defined style of attacking play because they don’t have a winning template to draw on. And no one remembers 1966 let alone how that team played to win it.
This England team is still struggling to find its footballing identity, which may be a function of the fact that for too many years prior to 2010 -2013 and the emergence of St George’s park and the EPPP program and other initiatives to develop young, more technically proficient players, England’s football authorities had wasted too many years tossing it off and settling for shortcut measures for success by hiring and firing managers - foreign and domestic - without any long term strategy or tactical plan that could be called the “England way” of playing to win.
There were too many wasted years of different managers/coaches doing different things that ultimately left fans confused about what the plan was for winning. At least, Southgate is trying to give the team some degree of identity, even if it’s a pragmatic one, and 2 goals conceded from set play throughout the whole tournament kinda supports his method. The challenge now for England is to work on developing an effective attacking style of play that, even if it doesn’t bring a trophy, could still serve as a template for future teams.
In short, England are still playing catch-up.

They have Foden and Grealish already. Both should have gotten more playing time to increase the team’s possession and allow time for build up play.
One pacy forward is enough in the starting eleven in my opinion Other pacy forwards can come in later in the game when the opposition are tired. You need your most reliable ball handlers playing close together and forming the spine of your team, Maguire and Stones, Bellingham and Phillips, Foden or Greallsh, and Kane.
The English Football Association does not seem to be sold on this line of thinking yet I think.

I hear you bro… but Foden, Saka, Grealish, Sancho, Rashford, Sterling- have not played with each other long enough to form a cohesive attacking unit that plays in a way where patterns of play are established and everyone knows what they’re doing. Most of those players are post WC18. If euros had happened last year most of those players wouldn’t be in the squad tbf.
Hopefully, the upcoming WC qualifiers will give GS the opportunity to try new things with his formations.
I did learn that FA are working on creating an England dna as they call it, where tactics and formations become second nature to the players, but I’m not quite sure if the current way of playing is the “England dna” they’re talking about.

England did have chances to win the final. But that was down to individual player ability/or mistakes from Italy. Not the team nor management decisions. Although I'm Italian, let me give a little tip. The difference between a winner and a second-place finisher is that you step into the field to win it all. You don't play "safe", you don't give Italy all the possession which is when they play at their best. England set out to reach the final. Italy set out to win it. People seem to forget that in 30 years no one is going to care about second place at the Euro 2020. And Italy played knowing that, while England did not.
Ps: as a fact id go as far as to quote CR7, "whatever my son does, in football or not, I want him to be the best". England was the best team, but they played without confidence, without building momentum. Looking at the talent on display for England vs Italy, we should have lost. Southgate blew it! He was more concerned about not being ripped apart by Italy than actually going for it and winning it! He said as much in his conference...'we took Italy down to the wire and didn't get ripped apart by them' So annoyed!

FACT: Gareth Southgate’s outstanding leadership skills took England to the European football final championship. It was 56 years ago since England last qualified for the final. He deserves better recognition and for his team. Young guns!🎉🎉🎉👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

i don't give Southgate any credit for England reaching the final. they had an easy draw the whole way aside from Germany and they have one of the most talented squads in the tournament. if England had a manager of Mancini's caliber, they probably win the tournament. Southgate's team selection and tactics were questionable throughout the tournament. and no surprise, his choices for the penalty-takers ended up being questionable as well.

@@evanclp514 but that Germany side as a team have been on the decline since 2018. They’ve been doing pretty bad since. Not taking away from England but would they have won that match had they gone up against a traditionally strong German side? In my view, I don’t think so.

The best comment on this whole situation with England is from Gareth Southgate himself. Asked about playing 3 at the back he said "I have to make big decisions If they don't come off, I'm dead." They did not come off in the Final.
