      @SeleTraining  Před 3 lety +1

      @@keithbaldwin5067 With the MoFi or the Insty Connect it does not handle phone service. However, if you connect to the WiFi hotspot you can use WiFi Calling on your phone to establish a phone connection through it. That takes advantage of the antenna boost. too. I often do that with my T-Mobile phone when it does not have service and connect through the MoFi that has an AT&T SIM in it to place calls.

      Did the MOFI give you any trouble or is it just because the insty is better. I am trying to get my eldererly parents a internet connection.. They don't need heavy bandwidth and I would do the insty but it's up front cost is much higher and I am trying to save them money

      @SeleTraining  Před 3 lety +3

      @@leweezo33 My MoFi works fine but some of the complaints about the MoFI is that they have taken too long to come up with updates, it uses much older technology, and the menu is complicated for many people to use. The Insty Connect has address those issues and integrates the antenna into the design. It is a better solution in my opinion. MoFi is releasing a new 5500 model in a few weeks and I will do a review of that one soon.

      Is your Tmobile SIM running another phone line or is it specifically a hotspot plan you signed up for? I went a few weeks to get one to try this out and they told me I had to buy a hotspot data plan, that a traditional phone line with data would not work in the Mofi. Hoping they were wrong, because I've hit my 100GB data cap for the hotspot and have been throttled to 2G (0.1mbps) speed. If I can run a SIM that is connected to a regular phone line with data then hopefully I can get around that 100GB cap!

    • @foxtrot35
      @foxtrot35 Před 3 lety +1

      @@aaronbrooks1048 I added a data line/tablet only to our phone plan. This plan gets you a SIM card same as your phone, it'll fit Mofi. Just don't break the size of SIM card till your ready, that way you wont nees adapter. Data only for us to add is $20 vs $30 for phone line, but could be more now. You'll get a phone number assigned to this data line, it's what Tmo says they do, no idea if it works. Many store employees are not too knowlegeable about this data only plan, but when I found one it sure made it easy. When you set it up in Mofi per Sele Training videos it'll operate as a data line, not a hotspot. We use alot of data this way and works pretty good. Hope this helps.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 3 lety

      Not much difference. The essentials will deprioritize you in congested areas but that happens with either plan when you are over the 50GB data use in a month anyway. It's rare to see a change with deprioritization. Only happened to me once in the last 18 months. Magenta includes taxes and fees in the price but Essentials doesn't so the price difference is not much.

    I found you through the BTBRV channel. I have a Netgear Nighthawk router, and I am fortunate enough to have a grandfathered plan that does not throttle me (unless I’m in a congested area). I love this Mofi option as a suggestion to family and friends who do not have my plan.
    My one issue with the Nighthawk is the WiFi signal around the hotspot is very limited. If I am much outside of my Fifth Wheel, I start to lose signal. What would be your recommendation to add a mobile router to my Nighthawk?

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 3 lety

      Yes, you can add a router that provides a better signal. The alternative is to add a wifi antenna that will enhance the signal. You also may want to check the settings on the Nighthawk for the wifi signal to make sure you are on the best range option. 802.11 N will provide a wider range than B or G.

    I have a SIM4 version, I also have a WeBoost system installed. I placed my WeBoost internal antenna on top of my MoFi 4500 between the two MoFi paddle antennas. My WeBoost has a omnidirectional antenna mounted on the roof of my motorhome. You mentioned connecting the WeBoost to the primary cell antenna port on the MoFi. To be clear, do you mean to take the cable coming out of the WeBoost amplifier and disconnect it from the WeBoost internal antenna and then connect the WeBoost amp output directly to the MoFi primary cell antenna input port? Or do you mean to disconnect the WeBoost external antenna from the WeBoost amp and connect the WeBoost external antenna directly to the MoFi input port (completely bypassing the WeBoost amp altogether). Thanks for clarifying!

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 3 lety

      My suggestion is to connect the Weboost antenna direclty to the MoFi in place of the Primary 3G/4G LTE antenna. You'll have to use the right connectors. The MoFi will use that antenna for boosting the signal and no more need for the Weboost amplifier. It would be interesting to compare the two methods to see which one works best.

    Thanks for your amazing and very helpful videos! I do have a question regarding the Mofi 4500: I am currently using the device at a remote location with a Twigby (Verizon) sim card to access the Internet. I have a device (a solar charge controller) at the location that is connected to a LAN with a bridge device but I can't access the charge controller on the Internet. As I understand the Mofi manual, it is not possible to use port forwarding functions in the Mofi device because cell carriers assign dynamic IP addresses to devices and port forwarding apparently requires a static IP address. Do I understand correctly? Have you been able to use the porting functions on the Mofi with a sim card with any mobile ISP? Any advice? Thanks: Don

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 11 měsíci

      Yes, it requires some network expertise to figure this out. I have not done it for the MoFi but you can get a free dynamic IP address from some companies like No-IP, Dynu, FreeDNS or others. Or you can purchase one for a fee from MoFi. That records the IP address for the MoFi and you can get at it remotely using the DNS name from one of those companies. Then you'll have to configure the MoFi to allow access from the public IP to those services. I have not set that up so I can't provide much details but you may be able to get a network guru to help you through it. The alternative is to use your charge controller apps if you have the right brand. For example, Victron has a Cerbo GX that connects to your charge controller and will upload the VRM information to the cloud. That allows you to access the VRM from anywhere. No special setup required on the MoFi since the Victron equipment only needs an internet connection to upload that data.

Once the MoFi has your SIM installed and setup you can create a wifi hotspot to use for all of your devices and you won't get throttled when you set the TTL to 65 even when you surpass the data limit of 50GB for T-Mobile. To improve your cell signal you can add a Proxicast omnidirectional antenna to boost the connection with the tower.

One of the things that I've found in the configuration is that ISP TTL (Time to Live) is now defaulting to Linux 64 (the recommend TTL you recommend is now Linux-2 65). Mofi's new recommendation is to use Linux TTL 64 (which seems faster). We're using the SIM card from my iPad and with a Verizon tablet plan - Unlimited Data and 15G of Hotspot. I now get a notice from Verizon stating that my Hotspot data is about to reach it's limit. I can't figure out why or how the MoFi is using the tablets Hotspot . I've tried to set the ISP TTL to Linux 64, but the speed tests were very slow. I've had to use Linux-2 65. Is it possible that this is why its recognizing the Hotspot or do I need to make some changes elsewhere? Any suggestions are appreciated.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 3 lety

      The correct TTL setting to go past your data limit without throttling is 65. Mofinetwork.com changed the default in a newer firmware update to 64 so anytime you do an update it may revert back to 64. It's a bit confusing but there really isn't different types of data and your carrier will still count up all the data usage no matter how you use it. However, when you have the TTL set to 65 the carrier assumes you are using a cell phone or iPad they won't throttle you but if you have a different TTL setting then the carrier will assume you are using as a hotspot for other devices and they throttle when you go over the data limit. So currently when you set it to 64 it is slow because Verizon throttles your data. As soon as you change it to 65 it no longer throttles. If you are under your data limit then it won't throttle with either TTL setting.

And btw, what makes the iPad plan qualify as postpaid since it's a fixed monthly charge?

      The problem with many third party carrier plans like Visible is that they place your data usage below others. That means when the tower is busy you get deprioritized often. Some plans even limit you to 5Mbps speed. That is one reason I stick with the main carriers like T-Mobile and AT&T. The postpaid plans are standard where you commit to a one or two year plan. With the prepaid plans many carriers block the SIM if it is used in any other device like the MoFi. That’s not an issue with the postpaid plans.

      I believe you can get a 55+ age T-Mobile plan at a discount. I'd test that on the phone first before you use it in the MoFi to get an idea of the speed. T-Mobile provides 50GB per month with the standard plan but the MoFi with the TTL setting will allow you to go over that without throttling. You can also get an iPad unlimited data plan from AT&T as a new subscriber for $20/mo if you call around and ask for it. No need for an $80/mo plan. They now tell me att now limits that account. I use att postpaid for my iphone and my wife’s. After watching your video I think I want to try the new customer $20/mo approach you describe. But I’m a little confused about which plan I should look for. Several times you described the plan as a normal voice and data plan, but in several of your replies you mention it as a iPad plan. Are there 2 different plans but they both work? Since I’m already a postpaid customer can I simply add the $20/mo plan, or do I have to be a new customer? Finally, I have to have a static ip for a device attached to my Mofi lan. I couldn’t get that on my prepaid account so I had to add a vpn service to provide a static ip. Does att offer static ip’s for postpaid accounts? Thanks you very much for your videos and help!

      You’ll just want to add a line to your existing AT&T plan. The iPad plan works too but that’s the low price option for new customers. You can probably get $20 for an extra line too. You can also find a fixed IP through many services including MoFinetwork.com

    I have the MoFi 4500 4G SIM7 LTE Router, using T-Mobile. I am trying the Yagi Antenna listed in your comments. The Yagi seems to make no difference whatsoever in the reception. I have tried it in both slots and it actually gets less reception.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 3 lety

      A couple things you want to do to make sure it's setup correctly. Update the router firmware to the latest version. There have been bugs in older firmware. You can do that with the remote update from the System menu. Also make sure you have solid connections to the MoFi in place of the Ultra Wide Band antennas. If you only have one antenna then put it on the primary side. The cable you use needs to be 50 Ohm coax. That's not the same as 75 Ohm TV cable. Finally, make sure the cable is not too long. You will lose signal if you use a long cable. Try to keep it under 25 ft. The Yagi is a directional antenna so you'll need to point it directly to the tower. You can find that with some apps on your cell phone or just turn it and watch the status of the signal until you see the best reception.

      You can connect the two yagi antennas directly to the MoFi in place of the Primary and Secondary ultra wide band antennas that came with the MoFi. It's best to tilt the two yago antennas at 90 degrees from each other. If you have a SIM4 model you can do carrier aggregation to combine the signals from each antenna. No need for any other booster. If you have a good signal to the tower then it is probably just the bandwidth of the tower itself that is the limitation. Also, try connecting directly to the ethernet port on the MoFi and test the speed. Some people have seen improvements hard wired as opposed to using wifi on the MoFi.

I have 3-lines, which 1 is for a Galaxy Tab A 8.4 I was planning on purchasing the MOFI4500 SIM7 and using the sim out of the Tablet, but just wanted to verify it will work. Also, I've been reading the MOFO5500 will be released soon, Should I wait for the MOFO5500? My goal is to have a working internet connection via t-mobile.

      I use the tablet plan for my MoFi 4500 and it works great. The newer MoFi is coming out but I will be testing a solution in the next 2 weeks that looks even better. Details coming soon.

    I was planing on getting the sim 7 but the Lan port is only 100 down and 10 up but I was also looking at the night hawk 4G LTE router which has a gigabyte Lan port it’s pretty hard to decide since I have a extra unlimited line on my T-Mobile family plan

      The MoFi is a bit outdated. I’ll have an update in a few days for a better solution if you can hold on a little longer.

      My plan for the Mofi 4500 is to use the sim from a iPad. Will that sim work?

    I started a new line and use the sim card with my Mofi, it recognizes the sims id phone number and everything sets up, but when i check for internet connection there is none. i have been using my sim from my i pad but speed slows down after about a week to 10 days. I would like to get the new sim card to work. any recommendation on what i can do to get it to work?

      You need to make sure the APN is set correctly and then do a band scan. Then you can lock it to each available band until you find a fast connection.

      @@lizaldinger9891 Is the new SIM already working in your iPad? You'll want to make sure it is activated before you use it in the MoFi. Also, make sure you have the TTL set to 65 to avoid throttling. The MoFi defaults to 64 so you have to change it.

      Gaming and TV streaming works fine as long as you are in a location with enough speed. I find it working almost everywhere I go. The antenna is helpful when you are in areas with a weak connection. I usually use campendium.com to find locations and can see if Internet is good before I go. That's why I always have connectivity everywhere I travel.

      @@freeflowinfamily220 I've been able to stream TV and access websites with as little as 2Mbps but games usually require more. If you get above 5Mbps it should work. Many locations I'll get 15 to 20Mbps and occasionally over 100Mbps.

    So I have an extra line at t mobile with unlimited everything that I currently have in an iphone that I don’t really use, if I buy the sim7 and put the sim in do I have to worry about carrier aggregation?

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 3 lety

      Carrier aggregation allows you to combine the signal from two antennas to get better speed. If your speed is good then it’s better to go with the SIM7 for the extra bands. If you need to squeeze out as much as possible then the SIM4 with carrier aggregation may be a better choice. I’m traveling and for me I’m happy with the speed I get with one antenna.
