MoFi 4500 SIM4 vs SIM7 with AT&T Unlimited Plan - How are the Speeds?

  • In this video I compare the MoFi 4500 SIM4 V2 and SIM7 V2 using AT&T's unlimited tablet plan for $20 a month. As seen in the video, the speeds on the SIM7 V2 are significantly lower than the SIM4 with AT&T.
    UPDATE:
    In the video I tested the SIM7 V2*. However, I recently tested the SIM7 *V3 and the signal and speeds were way better than the SIM7 V2 I tested in the video. In fact, the SIM7 V3 tests were similar or better to those of the SIM4 V2.
    I'm not sure if the SIM7 V2 I tested was just faulty, or if the SIM7 V3 is actually a better unit.

    Just wanted to thank you for the ATT info you gave me earlier this afternoon. I have been trying to work out the replacement for my previous ATT plan for about 3 weeks now. I called on the tablet data plan and was able to get just what you described in the video. They gave me the nano SIM card and the adapter, activated it in the store and I was able to plug and play into my mobile router. Your advice saved me money and headaches. Thanks again from a new loyal subscriber.

    If you are on the AT&T Unlimited Tablet plan $20 a month and have an issue with streaming limited to 480p. HERE'S THE FIX - there is a setting called "Stream Saver" which is automatically enabled on the plan. Once you turn this OFF, you will be able to stream at high quality with no VPN. It does not affect data usage or speeds with the MoFi whatsoever. You can easily turn Stream Saver off by logging in to your AT&T account and going to your wireless plan -> manage data usage -> stream saver

    Question: Today (02/16/2021) Mofi Network tells me that the MoFi 4500 router does not work anymore with the $20 unlimited AT&T data-plan as AT&T caps the data after 60Gb or so. They told me this is a recent change and also other carriers are now capping after double-digit Gb usage, so no unlimited data anymore. Have you noticed that and is there a work-around solution?

    • @holtsiphonehelp5816
      @holtsiphonehelp5816  Před 3 lety +2

      I have not noticed any changes with the AT&T unlimited tablet plan that I use. MoFi Network might be referring to a different plan- maybe a prepaid one. Or they could be wrong entirely. I've heard many people say that MoFi support is generally not helpful.
      A lot of people are currently using the AT&T Unlimited Postpaid Tablet Plan with the MoFi. There are no caps or throttling with the plan. It's truly unlimited. Many people use over 300GB a month and no issues whatsoever.
      I highly doubt that other carriers are capping data limits. I would say that more carriers are actually removing caps and adding unlimited options because of the increase in data usage and advanced technology in today's world.

      The MoFi requires the largest type SIM (standard size), not micro or nano. The SIM card I got from AT&T was a universal SIM, which has the three different sizes on one cut-out card. The universal SIM card (plastic card) basically has two adapters itself. One adapter is micro to nano, and then the other adapter is standard to micro. The adapters on the universal SIM are just plastic cutouts which you can just assemble/disassemble as needed.
      P.S. I no longer recommended the MoFi. Here is a much more user friendly router: amzn.to/3EndmAi

    I've been using the sim7 for about a month now and I got the same results. Best band I found was 5 down and 5 up. Very frustrating. Now I'm wishing I would have gotten the sim4. Sim7 was supposed to cover more bands. I am using Visible for my carrier. It is owned by Verizon. I am able to get it to work OK but do have buffering now and then. I will look at the CA to see if I can improve from there. Thanks for the vid!

    • @holtsiphonehelp5816
      @holtsiphonehelp5816  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for commenting. That's interesting you got similar results with Visible. Unfortunately the SIM7 does not have carrier aggregation as it uses a Cat 4 modem. The SIM4 has a better modem (Cat 6) which supports 2x carrier aggregation. However, from my experience the CA doesn't seem to be the reason why the SIM4 has better speeds. I'm thinking it might be some other aspect with the modem that gives the SIM4 an advantage, not exactly sure though. Anyways, I would definitely suggest trying the SIM4 to see if you can get better speeds. Please write back if you do try the SIM4, as it would be good to know if it is an improvement over the SIM7 with Visible.
      One more thing- there is a new router (Insty Connect) that blows the MoFi out of the water. It's currently available for pre-order so it might be another option worth trying.

      I have not tried the SIM8. In fact, I no longer recommend MoFi routers. There is a better option for about the same cost: Cudy LT18. It's about $300 on Amazon and is better than most MoFi routers.
      As far as SIM card, the trick is actually getting the proper plan from your wireless provider. I would not recommend Verizon, as they limit what devices you can use. Many people have not had success with Verizon.
      That said, I would recommend AT&T or T-Mobile. AT&T has an unlimited tablet plan that is designed for tablets, however it does "unofficially" work with routers as well. It's $20/month. You can find more info about it on various sites like Reddit.
      T-Mobile has a similar plan (business tablet) for $10/month. You need to spend time researching and learning how to get the plan though. Reddit is your friend. Good luck

      As far as I know, the only AT&T tablet plan that works with the MoFi is the postpaid "Unlimited for Tablet" plan for $20/mo. There may be some other plans with AT&T that may work, but I have not come across any for less than $20.
      Since you already have an account with AT&T they might offer you the "add-on" version of the plan. The "standalone" version is preferred but I belive AT&T usually gives this version to new customers/new accounts.
      Here is a breakdown of the unlimited tablet plans AT&T offers: i.redd.it/kz2rviw396r51.png
      Please note that this chart was not created by AT&T so some of the information may not be 100% exact.
      And yes, you do need an IMEI of a tablet to get the SIM card. Once you have the SIM card you need to activate it in a tablet first before you can use it with the MoFi.

      Actually the SIM7 does not support any 5G bands. The modem inside the SIM7 is only an LTE Cat4 modem. Yes, it does support the newer bands (14, 66, 71) however those bands are LTE bands and not 5G bands. You need a compatible 5G device to receive the 5G bands. Band 71 is T-Mobile's long range band at 600MHz, which is the lowest frequency (longest range) band in the US. Signal strength is not the issue here.
      T-Mobile labels band *71* for LTE, however they label band *n71* for 5G. The "n" indicates "new radio" band. Their mid-range 5G band is band *n41* at *2.5GHz,* and their high-range 5G bands are *n260* at *39GHz* and *n261* at *28GHz.*
