      The Insty Connect is $549.99 plus charges you yearly support fees and don't have 1/10 of the feature and stability as the MOFI

      Not that I am aware of but you can still and use a visible sim. The problem is that Visible limits your speed so it is not a good choice. You are better off sticking with one of the main carriers rather than the MVNO plans. Those put you last in priority and often throttle your speeds.

      Make sure the APN is set correctly for AT&T besides just selecting the carrier. It's the broadband one. Also doublecheck that the SIM works in a phone first. It may not be activated or may be blocked. Once it works in a phone it should work in the MoFi.

      For this video the tests were done in a rural area. However, I ran a test in a national park earlier and actually had faster speeds. It depends on the local tower and some areas that are congested have slower speeds. That may be why I tend to get better performance in remote locations. You mentioned not using prepaid. Is this simply an issue with using prepaid through the big carriers, or any prepaid plan? I used straight talk phone sim in the netgear m1100 for a while. Would this be possible in this unit, or fall into that "no prepaid"? If that's not an option, atm my only internet is through the netgear m1100 with att. Could that sim card be used in the mofi? Or the insty for that matter?

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 2 lety +1

      The problem is that many carriers will block the SIM when it is used in a device other than the original phone. They do that much more frequently with the prepaid plans and even more with small carriers. Also, those prepaid plans are last in line for data access on the towers so you get the slowest speed. Straight Talk usually limits you to 5Mbps as well. I use AT&T and T-Mobile. I was able to get a $20/mo AT&T iPad data plan directly from the AT&T store and it works great. My recommendation right now is the Insty Connect over the MoFi.

      I've got an old grandfathered plan with unlimited internet with the m1100 service. Would be great just to pop that sim into a better device and have it work. Often with Visible or Verizon they will block the SIM when it is used in another device. Check it again in a phone to make sure it still works. Then you just set the correct carrier and scan for bands. If the bands show up then it is reading the SIM correctly. Otherwise it is an issue with the carrier setting.

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 3 lety +1

      I have the EM7411 but I suspect the menu settings are all the same as the EM7690. The trick with carrier aggregation is that the tower dictates which bands you can aggregate and it's fairly automatic. You can go to the advance band select and choose just the bands you want to make available for aggregation but the tower will ultimately control which ones can aggregate. If you don't see aggregation your best bet is to get two Yagi antennas or something like that so you can point them to a specific tower for aggregation. It may be your closest tower is limited.

      My understanding of MIMO technology is that multiple antennas affect the effective and therefore throughput, not signal strength. So it would seem that multiple antennas would have an advantage over one regardless of how strong the signal is. That being the case, the 5500 would have been handicapped by not having multiple antennas like the Insty Connect did. The difference would be even more pronounced since the Mofi is 4x4 MIMO

    I'm holding out for the MOFI CAT 20 model, I may go with the one that picks up 5G since that is the future of mobile data and is a lot cheaper than the insty. How do you like the antenna you used? the fact that you don't have to pointed right at the tower is fool proof

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 3 lety +2

      Just remember the EM7690 is not 5G. You’ll have to wait for the EM9191. I also question the pricing they have given for it. I will be surprised if they sell it for under $900 when it is finally out. I prefer an omnidirectional antenna for normal use while I travel. It’s easier than the directional.

    I’ve got the MOFI 4500. I didn’t realize how over priced and out dated it was until I really started getting into LTE. After lots of research I realized it’s simple to make one myself with much better quality and easier to modify to my desires. I wont mention the Facebook group but if people read this you can make a better router cheaper with an easier ability to modify. You can’t just pop your sim in these with factory settings without the carrier being able to identify your using a router. Get something you can easily customize!! They also offer services that will build one for you .

    • @SeleTraining
      @SeleTraining  Před 3 lety +1

      You have to realize that most people aren’t comfortable customizing router firmware but it does work if you want to save a few bucks. Insty and MoFi both do customizations to the OpenWRT software too.

    Just got my 5500 9191. If you’re thinking of getting one DON’T! The firmware is straight trash. Not even alpha quality. They’ve redesigned the menus and limited valuable options. Even after upgrading to the latest firmware (2.0.R18). The carrier auto-detect is GONE - you have to manually set the APN. It will let you select a carrier but only for the band locking utility. The utility will test the bands appropriate for your chosen carrier, but won’t lock them regardless of the option selected. If you want a working 5G router try something else. The Mofi will be a huge paperweight with no danger of connecting to the internet until they’ve had a few months to work out the issues with the firmware. Mine’s going back.

    • @50kT
      @50kT Před 2 lety

      I've kept toying around with mine (the 5500 9191) and turned off all bands in the selective band lock. And now it weirdly says I have no assigned band, but then puts band 66 (for the first time ever) and also changed the operational mode to ENDC. I thought I would have 0 internet, but when I checked it it was at 60 mbps when I'm used to 15-25 mbps. This is after swapping my attennas over to the 5g low band 71 & N71 anntenas. The thing does seem to not select the 5g bands which is why I realized if I change the anntenas maybe it would force it to choose 5g? Its just strange because the thing says I have 0 signal, but my speeds are like 3x higher now
