I love my 2004 Ford F150 2 wheel drive. I bought it in '08 when I wrecked my '96 F150 300. The price of gas was over $4.00 a gallon and trucks were sitting on the lots. They asked $10,500 but I wheeled and dealed to $7,500 and a bed liner. Been great for 13 years for me.

It is so helpful to be reminded why I was so looking forward to upgrading to my 07 super crew 5.4L FX4 with 3.73 rear end. I haven’t needed to use it for towing, but it is great through Southern Utah back roads and trails. It’ll haul through windy roads also! My 5.4 has been trouble free and still running strong. After owning it for 12 years, he upgraded in 2013 to an 06 XLT with the 5.4 and has had a seamless ownership experience. I still like his old one better, but now that his truck almost as old as that one was when he got rid of it, I can definitely say that the newer truck has held up way better over time. I would go with the chevy in these 3. Love the old square bodies. And I want room in the cab for a kid or tools. 8 foot bed with cap is great. But i have a super cab with a 6.5 bed for a reason. I have a 4 year old and wife. And my explorer has seen better days. So long trips are in my truck. Thank god we have bigger cabs now with the extended/super cabs. And they are cheaper since everyone wants 4 doors. I wanted at least the 6.5 foot bed though. So I got a deal on the used 2017 f150 supercab with 35k miles for 27k bucks. 4x4, chrome package, rear locker, tow package, sport mode, power doors and windows. That's all I need. Leveled it and put some 35's on her and a cap. Great truck.

I recently got a 2002 F-150 with the topper just like that. The motor was replaced with a NEW motor about 4 years ago.
So far I haven't done much but clean it, haul out and dump his trash. Then I cleaned and armoralled the interior plastic which almost looked new before I did it. Then today I bought a cheap buffing wheel to put on my drill, took some really old polishing compound, and made the headlights clear again. They had been very yellow.
I also bought the hood shocks which hopefully I will replace tomorrow. I should be working on it daily; here a little, there a little.

Virtually all the issues you 'hear about' are on the 5.4 engines - avoid those unless the truck has had a recent engine replacement.

I bought a 2004 F-150 Supercrew XLT Lariat 5.4L Triton 4x4 last April(2020) 164K miles for $3900 with a few problems. Was a great deal love this truck. It is so powerful I barely have to step on the gas or it could light up the tires. I put about $1200 into it and it is now worth about $8500. it averages about 15 mpg, but this is a great truck for towing or to make money with. I also own an '06 Crown Vic so I can drive that if I don't feel like emptying my wallet on fuel. I just love owning a huge full size truck that feels like I'm barely in control of sometimes Lol. Still gets lots of looks even though it's almost 18 years old. Ford did a great job with the 11th generation. If you keep it maintained and don't drive it too hard, it will last forever. I really tried hard to get a Dodge or Chevy Supercrew 4x4, but I only had $4000 to spend. I looked at a lot of trucks, and for the money this was the best one I found and I'm glad I did.

I moved to a lighter oil and I change it myself every 3000 miles. It looks like honey all the time. Changed the plugs at 80K and they came out nice and easy...looked practically new, too. My truck has a really great drivetrain. Granted, it's not my daily driver and it's garaged...still looks new inside and out. I detail it regularly. Low miles...only 120K. I firmly believe my truck is worth $15,000 if I wanted to sell it, but I won't. I costs NOTHING to own, insurance is cheap along with registration and it looks and runs like new. 17 MPG on the highway, around 14 in town. On the highway I always have about 500 lbs of camping gear in the back. Bilstien shocks, Michelin MS2 tires and it rides like a limousine...otherwise all stock.

We use it a lot for junk hauling, light towing, camping, etc. it’s far from a daily driver- we use a truck for what it’s intended for. Been in some rough CO backcountry, hauled heavy loads, used on a farm for a few years… even the paint is great shape, no peeling fading or any defects. A few very minor scratches & rock chips up front like any old car has. it def got used as a truck but with proper care over years. My engine was replaced at 110,000 miles due to phaser/tensioner related oil pressure issues. The boxed frames do rust out. Steering shafts rust tight. The 5.4 pulls well but is underpowered and gets terrible mileage (11ish mpg in my case). I was able to fit 35"x12.5" tires with only 2" lift struts and slight trimming of the OE fender flare behind the front wheels. I'd of kept it, but the musty smell of wet carpet, terrible mileage, and lack of a backup camera pushed me into a '15 2.7 truck. It's better in every way except for the leaky plastic oil pan!

They have their quirks but I've seen 2v 10th gens with 300-400+k miles and still going strong on original engines. 4r70W/4r100 trans although antiquated, are tough and can be very reliable as well. 5.4 3v can be 'ok' if you know what to listen and look for and spend $$$$ replacing things before they grenade the engine... avoid the 3v in these trucks.

I had to replace that chintzy plastic manifold. From what I learned all those 4.6s and 5.4s had to have manifoolds replacedd because it was a bad design. Mine had about 150,000 on it when it failed. Some of them also had problems keeping sparkplugs in the heads. I overtorqued mine and never had a problem. Even with those problems I still liked the truck and would buy another one. I saw a 2007 4.6L 4x4 in my area on a lot it was very clean no dents or rust it has 162k miles on it they are asking $6,900 for it I was hesitant to purchase because of the timing, phaser, roller follower, vct solenoid, spark plug issues that these truck generally have.

That small V8 was in everything and bulletproof but a fair amount of people had problems with the 5.4 I thought.

Yeah. Problems. Timing Chains, Camshaft Phasers, and Spark Plugs breaking off in the cylinder head. Otherwise, nice truck.

it is mostly due to people that took to long to do maintenance . I have had friends (3) who bought these new with 5.4. Only one had to redo his engine and it was covered under warranty . So far all 3 have 250 k miles. The 2009 my neighbor has is just about to hit 300 k

Good trucks, well except for the spark plug issues, cam phaser issues, transmission issues that seem to plague all of that series truck, including mine, and it only has 125k miles
