People sometimes forget how big Dire Straits was in the 1980s, but the album Brothers in Arms (that was just two months old during Live Aid) became the best-selling record of the decade in the UK. And not every band gets to perform between U2 and Queen...

In 1985-86, Dire straits was the most successful band in the world, U2 didn't have as much success until the Joshua Tree in 1987. I don't think Queen played 300 sold out show that year. The only singer to break dire straits world record of the amount of tickets sold in Australia was ED sheraan last year. Even Eric Clapton was part of dire straits at some point. That's how awsome they were.

Another bit of nice trivia knowledge: Dire Straits has always been very popular in my native country (The Netherlands) and are actually one of only two bands to have had three songs in the Top 17 of the Top 2000 (the other one is Pink Floyd), an annual radio event between Christmas Day and New Year's Eve as voted by listeners. Dire Straits achieved this feat three times: in 2001, "Brothers in Arms" was at #7, "Sultans of Swing" at #10 and "Private Investigations" at #14, while the following year, "Private Investigations" was listed #7, "Brothers in Arms" #9 and "Sultans of Swing" #16. In 2003, "Brothers in Arms" reached #11, "Sultans of Swing" #15 and "Private Investigations" #17. The three songs have structurally been near the top of the list, with "Brothers in Arms" and "Sultans of Swing" always in the Top 35. "Telegraph Road" has also made a rush to the top in the past few years, achieving its highest position (#43) in 2015. The Top 2000 is the biggest radio event of the year in the Netherlands since it started in 1999. This year, the 20th edition will air; Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" was the number 1 in 16 out of 20 lists, including this year.
Edit: "Telegraph Road" achieved a new top position this year. It was at #40 in the list!

Spot on. Some people think great guitar work and solos is all about hitting a million notes at once at 100mph. For me it's more about tone, the feeling of the solo, the structure and timing of it and the framing. Not saying the fast solos are not great, of course they can be, but theres more to it than that imo.

Sadly that is indeed the case. At least pure music that was created from the heart and brought to life via lots of blood, sweat and tears in the recording studios will never happen again.
With computer audio manipulation techniques and ease of recording, and not to forget sampling and as well as auto-tune for vocals, there just isn't a need for the recording labels who form the Music Industry (it's big business after all) to spend their cash on someone who can really play their instrument well (this includes one's vocal cords as an instrument). After all, why spend hours in a recording studio with a band who wants to perfect their album as well as using it as practice for live shows later. All while it's much cheaper to just get any pretty face off of the street who has the ability to dance and the ambition to become an entertainer, and let the computer geniuses sort everything in the mix.
