- Eric Clapton performing with Phil Collins at Live Aid in front of 100,000 people in the John F. Kennedy Stadium, Philadelphia USA on the 13th July, 1985. The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. Broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time, the concerts were seen by around 40% of the global population.

I love Led Zeppelin but their live aid performance was horrible at least MSG was good .

@@taylorbernier7966 so Eric Clapton performed after work and the joke was his friends said "let's get a drink" and the joke says Eric refuses so there's a Guitarist named Jimmy Page who plays for Led Zeppelin and during this time he wanst sober, so not being sober he played horribly in Live Aid.

Phil Collins had performed in London earlier in the day, then took a helicopter to Heathrow and there the Concorde to US. Before he started his solo set he said "I was in England this afternoon. Funny old world, innit?" He also played drums for over 15 minutes while Clapton performed. All those artists deserve the best, they give themselves completely. Loads of Love to them and to you all.
Why did he do it? Because they were big friends?
@@kateushko5320 Thanks for your interest, Kate. I'm afraid I can't answer that question. But there are loads of articles about Phil as the transcontinental MVP at Live Aid. You might find sth there. If you do, would you mind sharing that here?😉 Regards!
Completely agree - If that isn’t rock n roll I don’t know what is!?
@@kateushko5320 Absolutely. Phil produced Eric's "Behind the Sun" album (She's Waiting, Forever Man etc.) that was released a couple months before the Live Aid show.

Liam Jake still put on for a good reason
And that Queens best concert still is at Wembley.
When I think of Live Aid, I think of this song
Bradford Langston
I think Dire Straits’ Money for Nothing. Also really iconic. The talents at that show were insane.
he's got the looks of both Chuch Norris and bob Ross mixed together
Perfection
Lol. Perfect
Beautifull but deadly....
And he's also a big legend.just like those two...
Haha 🤘
One of the top 5 most recognizable opening guitar riffs ever played. Satisfaction by Keith Richards is one too as well as Money for Nothing and Smoke on the Water.
I never get tired of this song! That intro chords grabs me every time.
Eric Clapton and Phil Collins on drums. Pure perfection.
Eric Clapton is not on drums. He plays guitar
LOL, we all know that,to see Clapton and Collins together on stage is always good;it's like Robert Plant with Collins on drums.
Clapton and Ginger Baker is the best...
a performance!!!
Wiola extracted distilled perfection. I've never heard an off note from Clapton. Ever. Kinda spooky!
Anyone who thinks Phil Collins sucks, just remember that he played drums on Layla and Stairway To Heaven in the same day.
To fly from England to Philly, directly after one performance, just to do another performance for the same concert is some hardcore dedication. Major props to Collins. Really shows what kind of guy he is.
He also wrote the soundtrack for tarzan and that's enough to cement him as one of the best.
biblical
And he was a great drummer with prog. Genesis and with pop too (but I prefer prog genesis 1000 times more)
oh he's a fantastic drummer just don't care for him in any other capacity
When the opening solo kicks in, it just sends chills down your spine.
Wym? Have you heard the insane intro solo?

honestly , I come back for the intro.
I love that Phil Collins is just casually pounding away on the drums lol

One thing most non-musicians won’t understand is how many uncountable hours of practice Clapton put in to get that good and make playing live seem so easy. Practice isn’t sexy, but it’s damn necessary.
fun fact. he had very little time to rehearse this set. also all the equipment was wrong except the guitars
and layla was a last minute adittion, he wanted to play cocaine but bob geldof said no, so he played layla without rehearsing
It’s the only way!
If practicing was all, many people would be Clapton. I have seen people who play 8-10 hrs a day. They aren’t Clapton.
@@racecarjonny8460 Yeah the implication doesn't go both sides, to be Clapton you have to practice, but practice doesn't make you Clapton

And Eric Clapton is still playing this in 2019 as I'm headed to Dallas to see him....at age 74!
Enjoy it while you can. Clapton is going deaf and he has a condition which is affecting his guitar ability. He said that he will be retiring soon aswell
@@mandatorymist7792 Yes. He was extremely ill for awhile. I'm actually surprised he's touring. But I've seen some CZcams videos of him that are just months old. His voice is still there, although not as "strong" and he still "sings" music from his guitar. I saw him down in Texas like 20 years ago. 1999 I believe. He was fabulous. But that would have made him 54. I was going strong at age 54, even 64. But I just turned 65. And for the first time in my life, I can physically feel the difference. I still go 90 mph but the next morning, I hurt like hell the first couple of hours. Then I go like I'm 21! Knowing I'll pay for it the next day. But it's worth it. Much admiration for him! He has nothing to prove to anyone.

The story of Phil playing at both venues in the same day just makes this whole performance better!
I was at Wembley. The only thing that sucked about that day was that while every other superstar dropped their big egos for a day Phil Collins had to stand out and play at both gigs. Always left a sour taste
@@alansimon1354
Was it him being an attention whore, or was it just a stunt to bring in more viewers? I wasn't there, but i could imagine it coming from the angle of 'how cool is that, we have a jet that can get us from here to there so fast we can do simultaneous gigs across the world! How many more people would tune in just for THAT? '
Yeah it seems Collins kinda shoved his way in on this set.
@@dethmaul I'm gonna go with attention whore here. I wasn't old enough to really experience the '80s (born in '87), but for some reason, it seems like Phil Collins was the only drummer people had heard of (even though he was more of a singer by that point).
Whenever you see clips of any sort of '80s collaboration (Live Aid, that _Do They Know It's Christmas?_ song, etc.), they always seem to have Phil Collins playing some extremely simple beat, followed by some simple tom fills (banging them as hard as he can). Surely there were better drummers around. I don't know why Eric Clapton couldn't have just used his own drummer.
I was there in Philly and Phil was awesome!!!!
When you need to play at live aid but there is an urgent meeting at the office
😂😂😂😂
Omg. Clapton in white linen...looking great... looking healthy...just shredding it...Phil on drums....this is pure magic😮
0ne of the greatest songs of all time!!
Fun fact, Eric was extremely nervous and uncomfortable about this performance because they were going after guys like Elton John and David Bowie and didn't feel they deserved to be there, they also had an extremely short time to rehearse and upon arriving learned the they did not have the sound equipment they had asked for. Amps, monitors, board, pianos, microphones etc were all the wrong models... The only thing that they had right were the guitars, and that's because they brought those themselves
He was nervous?? This is such an awesome performace
Good God! NO WAY 🙏🙏🙏🤣 no one should ever forget that he was and still is one of the best guitarists on the planet.pretty much from his Cream days🙏🙏🙏 BACK THEN there was a saying that said that WHEN IT COMES TO PLAYING THE GUITAR,
