Lyrics:
You get a shiver in the dark
It’s raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel all right when you hear that music ring
You step inside but you don’t see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound
Way on downsouth way on downsouth London town
You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords
Mind he’s strictly rhythm he doesn’t want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn’t mind if he doesn’t make the scene
He’s got a daytime job he’s doing alright
He can play honky tonk just like anything
Saving it up for Friday night
With the Sultans with the Sultans of Swing
And a crowd of young boys they’re fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don’t give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain’t what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans played Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
‘Thank you goodnight now it’s time to go home’
and he makes it fast with one more thing
‘We are the Sultans of Swing'

Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, in my opinion.
I never get tired of listening to this solo.
Yea I totally agree his skills are unique and unmatched
It's a shame the video cuts the majority of the second (and best) solo out.
@@tehcyde I know, right
@@tehcyde Really.
he's a great guitarist in the most untechnical and unsophisticated sense. i.e. if you're incapable of exploring guitar into the technical realms like metal and jazz, then it is incredibly easy to see why you think he can be such a candidate for one of the goats

One of the most incredible guitar songs of all time.
There's something about this song... I don't want it to end.
It's a masterpiece, nothing I have heard quite captures exactly what I feel like when I listen to it
captivating,, I am 50 years old now...you wouldn't believe the feelings we get when the track was first realesed in my younger years.
I'm envious of that.
Seldom do I have that feeling for songs released nowadays.
Classic rock seems to still be the best genre.
Just swing.

He was right
Thanks for reminding me!
My grandkids are about the right age.
I'm on it!
He was right. Music from this era, Dire Straits, Warren Zevon, Gordon Lightfoot, John Prine, etc, just hits differently.
If you like this version, listen to the Alchemy Live version. It's a whole new level.
Who past away
not everyone can play guitar AND sing like that, mark has a talent
search up john butler funky tonight... he's got bloody talent
no offence to mark he's a great guitarist but he is only playing chords when he is singing
The problem with singing and playing is not about the chords, it's all abouth RYTHM.
The right hand is what matters.
If you pay attention, John Butler is always fingering a fast and repeated pattern when he's singing, except for a slower riff at some point. Nothing different than what Mark Knopfler is doing. They're both great musicians. Talent? I'd say it's more about practice till perfection.
Also, Mark is left-handed but his right hand is incredible.
Peace.

Mark knoplers guitar skills bring me to tears.
Plays some of the most beautiful melodies.
I dont think he gets the credit he deserves.
He gets a lot of credit. Anyone who knows anything about electric guitar players usually consider him to be one of the best at it.
Their collaborative "Neck & Neck" was definitively bona fide. Why Chet Atkins didn't bestow C.G.P.-status upon Mark Knopfler (& certain other notables)...we'll just never know...
Oh he does
It was November 18, 1978, my birthday, and I thought I would give myself a gift. Thank you Dad for bringing me up listening to this. Love this band as much as i did 30 years ago
I'm 50 now. I've been hearing this song since I was a little kid. I didn't realize for so many years that this song is a masterpiece. The guitar work is amazing and flawless. The vocal sound from Mark fits perfectly with the mood the instruments create. Having a band that tight behind the lead guitar work of Mark, makes it perfection. There's no repetitions in the song. It's a complete story from the start to the end.
you describe in perfect way my feeling when I listen this song
same here I will be 50 next year, nothing compares to what we listened to, especially growing up my dad, who was depressed but loved music and cars
So true! You summed up this song perfectly
Yeah... but do you know what the song is about? It's a true story. Read the back-story on this song, then listen to it again. I PROMISE you will be hearing this song in a whole new light--as if for the very first time! (You won't be disappointed either...)
What about the sound guys the roadies the people who built the amps the engineers the luthiers the miners who got the metal the lumberjacks, Pythagoreas, and what about the cavemen who first played their bow as a harp why don't those people ever get credit either. That's what I'm wondering.
My parents were in their teens when they had me, so I was raised on 70s Classic Rock vinyl. My dad cherished his collection, pampered it, lol. That is my defence, apart from an army band lyre, against an Amish condemnation of music as ‘Dionisiac’: Nietzsche uses the term to mean “ecstatic nutter”. What you are describing is why we can be proud of our commitment to it - ‘Apollonian’: the rational considered *mind*

In 1987 or 88, I was working at Madame Tussauds in Baker Street. One day walking back into the building from the goods-in carpark I saw an amazing car with wing doors, maybe Lamborghini, and a very, very tall woman with hip length hair getting into the passenger side. I then saw someone sort of familiar getting in the driver's side and it was Mark Knopfler. He'd visited to have his likeness made for the soon to be opened Rock Circus at Piccadilly. Apart from the wheels all very low-key, unlike when Michael Jackson visited a few months later at 5am under secrecy to avoid being mobbed.

How the hell did he write this song? Pure genius. Everything about this song is just perfect - vocal, lyrics, composition, recording, guitar & bass, drums, chord progression and even the title of the song "Sultans of Swing".
He walked into a dive bar in England, heard a band called the Sultans of Swing. Made an awesome song of it.
@Yeshuah757 He couldn't believe the audacity of the jazz band.. They were playing in a dive bar to an audience of 4 people.. I believe his exact words were something like "nobody playing in that band that night was a Sultan of anything let alone swing.." So the greatest rock and roll song ever written is basically making fun of a crappie dive bar jazz band with an ego complex..
