This man can have a 3 hour concert playing only this song and I will buy the ticket.
Same
Same
he truly is one of a kind , and his music something to remember really , short to say , he´s a great musician , pure fact .
Same
Sort of modern day Bach.
He has a 1000 Sultan of Swing variations and they are all masterpieces.
Exactly, each version gives me something new and something brilliant
Different twiddly bits according to his wife.
i like this one the best
They are The Sultans of Swing.
But I do believe he feels that once he's gone, we might all become the sultans of swing...
thats what I wanted to say each time like a new song with same lyrics ;DD
Mark Knopfler.. The best thing to ever happen to a Stratocaster.
Indeed, and he's the best thing to ever happen to a Les Paul too.
Lest we forget about David Gilmour!
Yes he does justice to the Strat..
Jimi Hendrix wants a word...
(joke, I love Mark Knopfler)
@@iR0CZ Stevie Ray Vaughan...
The only man who can play the guitar so effortlessly that he looks like he is planning his dinner at the same time
idk why he always looks like he realized he left the gas on at home xD
That is the nature of giniality
Obv stealing the top guys killer comment. 😂😂
Yes. I'll add one more name. Eric Clapton.
You gotta love Mark, so often he's playing some of the most fantastic licks ever written whilst simultaneously looking like he's wondering if he's left the gas on at home!
He's always in a dreamworld.
@@spartan9293 Comes with being an artist I guess 😂, especially one like Mark, incredible creativity.
underrated comment,and true
Very true. Lot of guitarists pull silly faces, or look like they're in pain, but Knopfler always looks slightly bored..
His fingers provide all the expressions necessary...making faces would be redundant.
"People use these songs as milestones in their lives"
A musician who appreciates his fans.
Nothing more true than that statement.
Yep we are his bread&butter he loves it so do we God bless ya Mark Knopfler
Was looking for this comment
yes but also, a musician who still appreciates his own creations. his own arithmetic. what he hears. its that much more awesome when everybody else loves it.
this brings me back to the period every time when I was learning to fly -- music was great back then. Glad I stumbled on this.
I love how the crowd just goes absolute apeshit at 3:31. Imagine creating a solo so iconic that people immediately go wild over it after decades.
I've played guitar for years.. the precision of what he's doing is incredible.. I quit trying...
@@user-cz8yx6kr8p Sorry to break it to you bro but that solo is piss easy to play search up Polyphia and look at any of their videos that shit is in a different realm
"Milestones & Landmarks in the lives of people"....Can it actually be said any better? Mr. Knopfler nails it! Thank-you sir for the moments in time your music takes me back to
Like seriously! Landmarks of people 🎉
Yes - exactly. I was under a car doing an oil change when I first heard Sultans. The local record shop looked up their released LPs - and we were all surprised to find there were already 2 or 3 ..... I picked one and ordered it. Eventually they we saw them live at the Wembly Arena.
I honestly believe this is one of the greatest songs ever written. It has kind of a groove you can dance to and a guitar solo that literally makes you cry. Definitely a masterpiece.
I think you might be wrong. This IS the greatest song ever written.
This is my #1 music of all time.
This is a master show casing his art. Talking his way thru it. Archives my fiends. A style only few can do!

I'm a Street performance Musician, and the last year i was broke, cero in my bank account, and after work for 1 month in a shity place, i met with one guy who play the guitar on the street, having a good conversation, he accepted to share my his speaker to play for myself... I decided to go on the street and play for the people (for tips). And after 1 month, most of the people who heard me play this song on the street, share tips and with that, go and rent a place to live....
This song, bring me the food that i've in my freezer, and the bed where i sleeping... Thanks mark.
Clearly one of the best guitarists in the world - I'd do anything to see him live.......
The world? For me it’s ever. In fact I would go as far to say he’s the greatest
Knopf live is something else..I'll remember his show at the Greek forever
The first time I listened to Sultans Of Swing was 1985 I was just 9 years old it was the civil war back then in Lebanon and we had to run away at night cause it was really bad and I couldn’t find the cassette to listen to it again.. I just want to say that when you love something and you can’t find it or it’s not there any more you can always carry it in your heart...
WOW
Dude! Damn this was heart touching.
I'm glad you survived.
Cheers mate!
holy fuck this was deep

Mark knopfler and David Gilmour, 2 of my favourite guitar players.
Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour, Carlos Santana and Mick Taylor are my four.
Eric Clapton Wonderful Tonight 1990 1.25mins AMAZING!!!!
David Woods . I Hope Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour play together one day.

The small part of the guitar at 1.25mins gets me all the time
But this is a great song
mark, if you are reading this: thank you for your art. So blessed to had experienced your music, so happy. Thank you! We adore you.
Way back in 1976 myself and a friend found ourselves in the Old Covent Garden in London wandering around the various bars and pubs there. Early in the evening we came by the Rock Garden Bar/Restaurant/Club where there was a bunch of guys unloading instruments from an old van. We didn't take much notice at the time but as we passed the Rock Garden on our way back a couple of hours later we could hear this interesting music coming up from the basement. We stood there for a minute or two before paying our entrance fee and we spent the rest of the evening watching this band called Dire Straights. They were brilliant. You could tell they were a band destined to go places.
That was one of those nights where you unexpectedly encounter something a bit special.
I've seen Dire Straights a number of times since and they have put on some of the best concerts I've seen (and I've seen a few). They never let you down.
Mark Knopfler just gets better and better. Almost 50 years later I'm still listening and I have to say thanks for the music Mark.
Niesamowita historia, gratulacje
Thanks for sharing Robbie. What an experience.
The smile he gives at 3:34. It's like he knows he's created one of the greatest riffs of all time, and only just realised how good it is
Or like "this part always makes the audience go wild"
or just being sure of the reaction :)
This part was not in the original song......can you send me the link of the real one
Either way, you can tell he's just in that place you go when the tunes all come together and you're crushing a beautiful solo
Not one of the greatest, the greatest
One of the best, if not THE best, guitar solos ever made. The 'Alchemy' version is just out of this world.
Got that right!
😘
I was smiling too
Thanks for mentioning it! I went to check it out. I had never seen it before and it was lovely to see it done differently but brilliantly.
Alchemy is the epitomy!
Mark, we all die. I'm younger than you but I might leave earth first. Anyway, I find it really important to tell you how much you brought joy to my life and how much your music was the soundtrack to it. Thank you for every note. You are like a quality shoe to me.
I second this
Really inspired
Gave my husband and I much joy 40+ years ago. Thank you
I bet at 3:35 when Mark started smiling playing his "world-wide-famous-solo", all the people from the world, watching this video, were smiling too!!!
I know i did!
I had a tear to be honest !
A smile was formed on my face without me realising until the end of the song
absolutely! And my arms went up in victory!
YES! A big smile at that!!!!
“Songs are landmarks for people” Beautifully said and so true
Back in the seventies, i was walking thru a dept store, passing the music section, sultans of swing was playing, the hair on the back of my neck stood up and a chill went thru my body, i stopped and bought the album, to this day it does the same.....
He can probably make any random notes sound like Sultans of Swing. Pure Genius.
Makes sense, seeing as how every note he played in this video was random. Not a bad cover I guess. 4/10
I'm sure he's said before he's never played this solo the same which he alludes to while playing, "I don't know what any of this is gonna be"
every single song is written in a key, so yes he can make any random notes in the key of d minor sound like this song. it does take a lot of knowledge to know the scales of said key and incorporate them into a song
He hit at least 3 wrong notes there, you're always one fret away from a right one.
My dad would put the headphones on my mother's belly and play me Dire Straits in the womb, he was obsessed! I love Dire Straits so much because, not only is it so incredibly beautiful, extraordinarily talentedly written and played, but it also brings good, happy memories of my dad ❤
You have a great Dad.
@Hets Girl did u figure out the key? it's Dm/F incase u didn't
I loved that!!
Then he would bend her over and nail her
My dad made me listen to good old music like this and many other great artists. He left this world when I was 15.But I have great memmories of him!
I would buy a ticket just to hear him talk about music
the best solo ever made .i never get tired to listen sultans of swing never. I saw him in Canada and was fantastic.
He’s one of the best guitar player out there. This song reminds me of my dad. He passed away 6 years ago and and as a little kid I remember my father would play this song every week. Now I’m 45 wishing I was back in time. This song never gets old.
The ability to start a song from the middle without being ever noticeable , and all players just know where to pick up is DIVINE
It was probably rehearsed, but I agree that entrance was so smooth it’s criminal
Best guitar player ever
he is a true master of his instrument- very few are near his level (gilmour, santana, b. may, jeff beck, r. blackmore)
Dad: turn off this
Me: Why?
Dad: I have bigger speakers downstairs
This is a magic comment...
i came in the speakers sorry
@@yousuffpaladin8022 WTF ????????????????????????????
F%$#k yeah!!!
That's pretty much what my dad used to say about me listening to dire straits.
Thank you, Sir! Thank you for everything!
mr knoplfer it has been 18 years since my father has passed but everry time i hear "the sultans of swing" it reminds of the first time me and him listened to it. i love your music and continues to be one of my all time fave bands and now my daughters love your music aswell
Sultans" was instantly my no.1 all time song, and in the 40 something years later,it's still my no.1 all time song.
Simply incredible listening to Knopfler play. No distortion. No effects. Every note crystal clear. It's amazing watching his fingers make the guitar sing.
Not only does he play the guitar like a god but he makes you wish you had a friend like that. What a great guy.
This is the kind of performance and connection with the audience that refills the soul.
This is how you live forever.
1:41 - "The songs... they're landmarks for people, the songs are milestones for people in their lives".
Spot on.
Amazing! I could listen to him all night!
Such a talented and charming man. Love Mark Knopfler ❤️
3:20 The guitarist in the back is shaking his head in amazement with the rest of us
No, I think he's probably thinking, "Get on and play, Mark...!"
pretty sure that's not a guitar that he's holding
Driving down a country road near my home in 1979, this song came on and we literally pulled over and turned it up and just sat there, gobsmacked.
My dad told me a similar story, about how he never heard anything like it first time he heard it on the radio he just sat there completely in awe
Lets all be honest tho, this is one of the greatest songs ever written
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitar pickers ever. Sultans of Swing was by far the best guitar solo. I would give a month's wages just to see him perform it live
The first time I heard this song was with my dad. When I grew up and moved away from where my dad was living, when I hear this song, it always put me in mind of him.
There were many occassions where this song would come on the radio, and I would pick up the phone and call my dad and I would share with him, the same, so much so that one time when we were talking he said I think of you everytime I hear this song. It is also the song where I fell in love with the guitar...man that riff
Thank you for being you and thank you for sharing your gifts and talents🙂❤️💜🙏 blessings
One day God thought .. today I create the best guitar player ever in the world... he was created Mark Knopfler... Legend
Greatest guitarist of all time! This song changed so many lifes.
Im 30, and i can't even describe how much talent this man has, its such a shame where music has shifted to be in 2021
When i was a kid i didnt like this song so there you go. That might have been all but then i heard more songs and also got smarter. What a difference a day makes, erm....bunch of days. Now this among my fav songs ever, and dire straits is way up on my list of fav bands ever...and im so in love with Mark Knopfler and his beautiful music that i can hardly stand it. He is an absolute legend.
An absolute master of the guitar.
The roar when Sultans of Swing come into play 😍😍🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
This man is genius. His art of playing is unbelievable. Can't stop listening to his brilliant guitar playing
Genial maravilloso fantástico camaraa!!.
He is playing ... and you close your eyes and listen and you know what he will play ... you know what will be next and you know ... that is what he will play..... magic, ... we are all speaking the same language, more importantly we know who we all are there in that moment and we understand each other. We only have one more pint to order. and the bar closes. boy I have a lot of fortitude because the last comment before was a year ago and I have never been there when the last round at any bar was called for but I have because of the music.
Mark has kind eyes and a soothing voice, his body language also is gentle and polite, success has made him humble, huge God bless to you.
You are spot on my friend
"Amazing"...observation!😊
He smiles with his eyes! His humility seems so genuine.

Mark is one people that born to be a musician. He is a pure genius, like Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Richards… the guitar is an extension of his body. He is a genius everytime he touches a guitar!
Played the air guitar to this for 40+ years and got it perfect every time...
Finally a cameraman who doesn’t focus on feet when he is playing guitar.
Where is Azamat?
That's nice
1:55 to 1:57. could have just stayed there, and send their loopey zoomey camera editor home

Maybe he's not josh from pearl jams video
I've been listening to this song for 36 years and I will never stop... good job Mark!!!
What an incredible introduction! AS beautiful as the original song. WE're the too the Sultans. We're the Sultans of OUR OWN LIVES - Let's STAY in the NOW everyone. Don't look back. Look at now & your future self. - Says your coach! If you're going to make a difference you must fully commit to the new.

My Dad's favourite song. He would sit and pick away on his guitar like he was alongside Mark. They played this at his funeral ❤️
No gimmicks..no BS...just a man with truckloads of talent and soul doing what he does best- Melt us out with his otherworldly gifts and skills.
seriously gifted..funny how people extremely gifted think its no big deal the talents they possess which makes it even more sublime
Can't get enough of Mark Knopfler just one word """LEGENDARY"""
He's right, songs (and bits of songs) are what people have grown up with and landmarked for generations, and that solo in SofS takes me straight back to when I first heard it!
Mark Knopfler - words just don’t adequately describe how talented he is. Sultans of Swing - Alchemy live - remains as the best live performance I’ve ever seen - beyond epic.
Yeah it's my favourite version too 👍
10 of the best minutes on CZcams. The build and build and build... and Terry Williams CRUSHED it on drums
"Songs are milestones for people." - Mark Knopfler
Hello Judith, how are you dear
I know (musically) this man for 40 years and yet every time i see him he surprises me.
He is incredible, he play one of the most beautiful solo in music history with the face of a man waiting the bus talking about the wather with other people... LOL!!!
There are some great guitarist, and Mark is among the top! Not many like him.
Mr. Knopfler does more in a note than others accomplish in an entire song.
This is amazing. Grew up listening to this as my dad is a huge fan but I didn’t appreciate how wonderful this was until a couple of years ago. Now 32 years old and you can bet that my little 18-month old girl listens to this a lot.
Many, many years ago I bought this on its release on 45rpm vinyl. Even now the hairs on the back of my neck still stand up when I hear it. It never ages.
That drummer was best drummer I've seen in a long time...
My favorite song ever! Thanks Mark
Yeah!! And what a terrific band behind him; the drummer is exceptional.
Thank you Mister Mark Knopfler for this and for everything ! You are one of the reason I picked up a guitar one day for ! Money for Nothing was one of this too !
best guitarist forever👍👍👍😍😍😍🌹🌹🌹
I was 17 in 1988, and even today at 54 I'm a fan.
It's amazing how the rest of the band looks at Mark with admiration in their faces
Was thinking the same thing as I watched this :)
It was and still is one of my all time favourite songs for more then 40 years all the way back during my early high school years till now.
This song has been with me through good times and bad times and it was always one of the first songs when making a compilation initially on the microcassette though CD, MP3, Ipod.
Good music never dies, never gets old and never gets boring.
Thank you!
One of the pinnacle songs for guitarists to learn. Just look at the number of covers on CZcams. When it first came out the big questions was, "How is he playing like that?". Before CZcams, before MTV, we could only listen to the album and unless we saw Dire Straits in concert or on television Mark's technique was baffling to a great number of amateur guitar players. It was so joyous, so brilliant, so fast and amazing we could only take the ride and enjoy the mystery. Mark, thanks for "Sultans" and all your other great songs over the years.
Making Movies STILL ranks in my top 5 albums of all time. Every time i listen it takes me back to being a teenager with not a care in the world. Mark Knopfler is a virtuoso.
One of the all-time greatest songs
I love the grin on his face as he gets right into the solo and the crowd cheer.
"Yes honey, I did the twiddly bits this time"
A+😃yes I got the move...
Mark best guitar 🎸 player ever ❤
I have so many favourite guitar solos from back in the day, I can change my mind on which one is my all time dependent on my mood. But unbeknownst to me why, this is the only one that makes me feel the exact same feelings inside my soul as the very first time I heard it. A true masterpiece
By far the best guitarist I've ever heard or have heard amazing man and artist of music .....
How wonderful Mark is, what a fantastic sense of humor he has, how well he plays, how well he does everything, and how handsome!🥰🎸🎶❤️❤️
Magic in his fingers... Nothing like the sound of a clean strat through an amp with no effects. Wonderful!
They are truly land marks for people. Well said ❤️
Knopfler's very wise words: Yes, people love the iconic "twiddly bits!" And I love the way Knopfler's casual improvisations here are so uniquely "Knopfler!" His sound is so distinctive, and personal - and so wonderfully different from all those of his generation, like me, who grew up listening to, and copying, the young Clapton of Cream. Knopfler, when he poured out of our radios in '79, with "Sultans of Swing," was, and remains, a breath of guitar fresh air!
One of the greatest guitarists of all time. AWESOME!
One of the greatest music geniuses that ever graced this world. Thank you Mark for the music.
Remember when this came out
I used to go to a rock club and DJ used to play this regularly excellent times tucked away in brain box
That smile on his face when the crowd cheered. Amazing
The first time i listened this legendary sound, i was playing “driver” from ps1. Was 2002 i had 11 years old. My sister put this song and i stayed in extasy, i dreaming to play this song one day!!! Today i’m a amateur guitarrist and i can say that i learned to play this song and it is the song that i love more to play with my band!! Thank you, Mark!! Sorry about my english!!

Every time, when I start my car engine, this was the very first song played, it’s been 10 years. Now, I just bought my Model3, this is first song since I had my M3. LOVE IT. Thanks for creating amazingly beautiful songs.
I started to play Guitar just because of this song. Good Bless you, Mark.
