Hi
This car came to me due to misfiring...
This after, new spark plugs, and ignition coils...
In this instance, have not repaired it, but have diagnosed it...
I don't really have conditions to carry this sort of work... so is work for someone else....
Still, follow me on this video to find out what was the problem!
Hope you enjoy the video.
Any questions or comments put them below.

Top diagnostics Luis. Being VW's first go at downsizing, these early chain-driven TSI engines can really be a nightmare.
😊
Yes they can...
👍👍👍
Also there can be carbon build up on the intake valves as it happens with all petrol direct injection engines. It disrupts the normal flow of air in the cylinder and causes bad combustion, hence the difference in color of the second spark plug. It is a pain to get this intake off and inspect the intake valves. I have seen a lot of this happening and in different manufacturers. On the other hand, usually the timing issue you mention is reflected on the camshaft timing parameters and there is also metallic noise when you start it up for a couple of seconds, from the chain being longer than it should.
👍👍👍
Your work is life saving to me!!!! thank you man.Sello South Africa
😊
Thanks!
👍👍👍
You have good actitude always, you've got it like all times, in this case I have check the fuel pressure and the injectors because can cause a problem, you are the best
😊
👍👍👍
Great video. Unbelievable just how many frigid plastic vacuum connectors there are that have broken. Plastic cheese that breaks under heat and vibration
Indeed...
👍👍👍
Nice repair video
VAG petrol engines of that vintage seem like a real nightmare, between direct injection carbon build up, bad timing chain issues, turbos and coil packs going I would avoid at all costs. Honda and Toyota port injection NA petrol of the same era outlast them all
Great diagnosis as always mate 👍🍻
😊
Thanks!
👍👍👍
number 2 cylinder looks rich you sure it's not over fuelling and leaning the other cylinder off :) play ground of fun by looks of it great vid
i understood what you said at the beginning !! you wanted a pizza, a foot rub and a fountain pen

Better luck with next one, you are amazing

Great diag Luis!!!

Great video 👍 looks like someone has ripped in to it so I would give it back, otherwise you will end up replacing all broken part's then arguing the toss about who pays!
🤣🤣🤣
Very true...

@@LMAutoRepairs It'll be a 2nd of the Honda driver
You should do a leak down test, when you set each cylinder to dead center, when all valves are closed, put pressure in the cylinder and watch how fast it leaks out. Then go to the next cylinder... If the leak down test is OK, then most likely you have a chain problem indeed.
👍👍👍
I believe I have the same compression tester and the hose part is off on the actual pressure some of them had the valve on the end and doesn't account for the volume in the hose. I would test it against another tester or use the straight or bent adapter and compare to hose. I believe there was others saying there is about a 20 psi difference.
😊
Need to get a better tester really...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
woah, what a same engine i have now on my touran. mine got idle into 1100, worse when AC on, got P2015 error. turns that i got vacuum nipple broke at the top (15:01) ,below those hanging bulge thing with bracket. its hell to find those, it on the other end of Y connector (the one that goes to engine cover, one to top nipple (the broken ones) and back to big intake hose. i use AC capilary pipe with 2.5mm diameter, so it goes through the broken nipple and got it glued with rtv silicone (been trying with steel glue but broken again). hope could fix that darn error, just got a little obd thingy, so not much information i could get about misfiring & timing tho'. Nice vid, it is frustating for a no mechanic like me
Good effort...
Hope you get it sorted!
👍👍👍
I’m sure you’re well aware but on an auto scan or gateway scan it’s easier to click report and it will show you all the fault codes on the same page. Who am I to give you tips anyway you’re well above my level 😂
Yes... I know...
👍👍👍👍
Thank you for watching!
you can use a presure transducer in cilindre to see the opening of the valves and compare the waveform with a good one
Yes... need to get one first...😋
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
@@LMAutoRepairs I have to get one as well, but pico is expensive
DITEX is more afordable
Yes it is...
Do these break valve springs? Had similar scenario on a golf 2.0 turbo.
did not see the full video yet only the problem, im going to take a wild guess... piston rings gone? common issue
Next time try multi channel oscilloscope and show the timing. Just suggestion. Yes it is bit time consuming but it takes way less time than removing covers and check.
I know... should have done it for video purposes... my bad here...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
@LM Auto Repairs Did you found the problem? i did a new engine with pistons valves chains guides everything and i have same issue.
Those intake runner's I'd definitely go arfter first as they'd definitely cause a miss fire
Agree...
But not the low compression...
Thank you for watching and for your comment Neil!
Really difficult situation. Engine is full of weak plastic parts and from that turbo is worn out generally and owner doesn't want to spend money. Rather forget about it.
Agree... which I kinda did...😋
👍👍👍
I was something like that. Head gasket, coolant in cilinder make misfiring.
Another good possibility...
👍👍👍
tive o mesmo problm fui descobrir que o motor estava ligeiramente fora do ponto entre as cames, mudei a corente de distrib i fico bom.
😊
Porreiro!
👍👍👍
10:1 Static Compression Ratio is only 147psi, so this isnt that far off especially as its not cranking very fast. Im not sure this is your issue...........
Agreed, 10:1 is approximately 147psi
Hi.. aren't you do incylinder pressure testing with a scope for timing testing.. I had similar problem after I struggle for whole day it was turnout to be bad fuel damn it..🤔
I should have probably scoped it... at least for the purpose of the video...
👍👍👍
Man that car was Fubar completely.
I think you were solving 2 problems. I think there was the initial problem, and all the broken hoses etc were from some caveman ripping things apart and making the problem worse.
Did you ever fix the wiring for the coil packs (I'm assuming off camera)?
Excellent work as always
Not really... After speaking with the owner was clearly he was not happy to pay for a non fix... which is understandable... so, I cut my losses at this pint... specially after a the other repairs...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
That engine is crap 6000 miles and already finished do all VW engines do this or are the new ea212 any better
All cylinders misfire!!! I wonder why there is no low RPM???? and NO ENGINE VIBRATION??? please more details why no engine vibration????
🤷♂️
Probably because they all miss, it balances itself...
No doubt that was misfiring though...
Thank you for watching!
Don't miss one bit working on them engines, vw should stick with timing belts
😊
Agree...
Thank you for watching!
👍👍👍
could be nice to see the fuel trim at idle and 3000rpm
and maf sensor data
🙄
Missed that...😋
👍👍👍
I never understand why after testing new engine the engineer at vw say good engine put into production. 60000 miles and engine is clapped.
😊
👍👍👍
I think most manufacturers are making the customer do the product testing, especially the european ones!
Error code P3008 (cam signal out of wack) could point to a worn/stretched timing chain; if replacing it, also worth looking very closely to the teeth on the crank pinion for knife edging... POS engine, one of the worse out there, avoid
My bank 1 flap is stuck on 85% on idle, what do i do? it never goes down to 0
Where is the crankshaft position sensor on this engine?
10.5:1 compression ratio equals 154.35psi but your result still on the low side. In my opinion, the knick sensors were a bigger clue than you focused on. Timing chain has slipped, or stretched. In light of the rest of its woes, this engibe is scrap.
😊
👍👍👍
00:12 PMSL...right, back to the video
😊
I am In the beginning of the video, i presume the notorious 1.4 tsi engine cracked the pistons from sides, let's see if i am correct...
I think that your engine was cold during the compression test, they all were 130-140, if you warm it up it would be 150-160 but still low, related to mileage and age.
But even its perfectly 200 psi, the cracked pistons will not affect this value. You can't see the cracked pistons via camera/scope. You have to take it out and take off the 3 gaskets. Then it will spread to your hand as cracked biscuit.
The LSPI thingy causing this issue.. Combined with older dsg, i am sure it is related to pistons. Gaskets or the piston itself...
Nice video and effort Luis! I am really enjoyed...
😊
Probably...
I admit, I would love it to take it apart and get to the bottom of it...
But I just have no conditions for that sort of job...😓
@@LMAutoRepairs and if you have the best conditions you can't just put it together because it is probably cracked so you need Pistons rings valves even the cylinder surrounding (can't remember the name of it)
Not worth to do, part it out and get something else better than notorious 1.4
👍👍👍
Have you tried to change flap sensor & solenoid valve (broken) ? That would have taken care of flap closed bank 1, which causes misfiring. Timing could be checked timing tool, or diagnostics. We’re the plugs wet with fuel? If timing is out then they are fuel wet. I m no expert, but had faced these issues and solved ..
I showed the spark plugs...
Yes, I could have ran the scope on it, but I was kinda convinced after the compression test...
👍👍👍
@@LMAutoRepairs thanks. For your reply. I like your videos a lot. I m DIY, like to do repairs myself.
I had the timing problem, with no start. Compression test showed 2 cylinder under 90, and I was told by the mechanic that engine (pistons, rings) gone. Car has cylinder wash symptoms. I asked mechanic , did he do the compression test after disabling fuel injectors. Mechanic said engine need rebuild or replaced.
I brought car home, checked compression after drying cylinders, they eeee over 140 & 150. Then checked timing with timing tool. It was out. It was easy, on BLG engine, same as BMY, few bolts need to be undone to remove cover plate on side of cylinder no 4 , both camshaft were out of sync. Did the chain myself,
Culprit was tensioner. And due to which chain jumped few teeth.
👍👍👍
Pim, pam, pum. Gostei dessa para escolher o alvo. Kkk. Grande abraço.
😅
👍👍👍
Even with no oscilloscope, couldn't you capture the timing problem with the MaxiSys with the "Live Data" function? What "Live Data" parameters would you choose?
Probably...
To be fair, after the low compression was like done for me...
Next time might need to be a bit more thoroughly...😋
👍👍👍
@@LMAutoRepairs OK! At 30:12 you say the compression ratio is 10.5/1 but, according with what I found, it should just be 9.7/1. Not much of a difference, though, but a timing issue is a great possibility. Here are my sources (not very professional, because I'm not a pro...):

Exelent diag but carbon is a real big problem on these engines.Fuel trims are the way to go.

Why does the cooling fan rely on the outside temperature readings shouldn't they use the actual coolant temperature
At the begining of the video in the live data you can see coolant temp shows 100C which isnt normal but I dont know why he missed it.
You must have misread it...
Coolant temp was 12°C

Knock sensors .. oops!!

Appreciate you teaching us, but surely this car is uneconomical to repair and should be scrapped?
And probably it is what happened to it...lol
