Hi Guys, I hope you enjoyed the video, please bear in mind I had a nasty cold coming on so its effected my presentation a little bit and of course made my jokes even better :)
interesting take on an 'old school' style speaker' and some resemblence to the company owners Dynaudio heritage. I tried to find some frequency response curves to compare them to Danny Richies 'The Brute' old school speaker which plays to -3dB down at 31 Hz. The wide baffles on the Atalante and lack of edge roundover will probably cause some wobbles in the response from diffraction and surface reflections, but like with Danny's designs they also went for an assymmetrical layout to offset the surface reflections. Meanwhile I'm stuck with my active Linn Keltiks which are about to get an uprade with SEAS mids and Hiquphon tweeters, new gaskets and rewiring with GR-Research polyethyene jacketed wire and Tube connectors, a pair of new 360's would be nice or a pair of used 350's. These are made not far from me just over the Rhine in Obernai in the Alsace, I'm on the German side just by the Black Forest

Great review. I have the Atalante 3 and agree that there's just that something about the sound, the voicing, that wins me over. If I ever upgrade, it will be to the Atalante 5. People need to give this line of speakers a serious listen.
Revival Atalante 3 and 5 are wonderful speakers, they are worth and sound much much more than their current economic value.
I think this is one of the best speakers you can buy at any price!
Heard the 5s at a hifi show. Very impressed, especially given its price point compared to my USD15k pair.

Great review, thanks. I agree with you about midrange soft domes, they are special and I particularly remember the Volt and of course the ATC drivers.
These look like the atc drivers.. I havent looked at them together or knows who makes them..

Heard these in a Hifi show recently, I was really very impressed. Beautiful finish, soft warm and clear sound. I think they were the most interesting product of the show by far.
I wouldnt call these soft that would have been something in the system and the speaker showing you it :)

I agree with Terry. I own a pair of these and they are not soft sounding. Maybe compared to the Spendor D7, which are on the brighter side of neutral to my ears. I would say they are more neutral with very mild warmth in the lower mid range and upper bass. @@PursuitPerfectSystem
Very nice review ! Do the Atalante 5 use internal wiring from Van Den Hul as their little sisters Atalante 3 do ? If so would it make sence to use Van Den Hul speaker cables with them ?

Thanks for review. Have you ever tested jbl l100 classic? I owned jbls and sold them a few years ago because they didn’t deliver my expectations. How would you compare atalante 5 to l100 classic? Maybe you can help me on this. After jbl’s I went other way to b&w 702 signature. Sold them too just recently 😂. Were to harsh,bad speaker for late night quiet listening. I wonder if atalante 5 would be a good speaker for late night quiet listening with full range,and what amplifier would you think is suited the best for them. Would you say class a? I have hegel h600 now 🤔

Thank you for the brilliant review! I just purchased a pair of these a few months ago and loving them. I have them in a fairly large room (50m^2) and I am quite impressed with the bass. Every room is different I guess! I added a pair of REL S8/12 for the sub 30hz region and am loving the combination.
You don’t really get much output from the 812 below 30hz so maybe try integrating them higher up and using them where they excel

I'm personally not a fan of the retro look, though these ones do look better most of the revival ones I've seen and are finished nicely.
Soft dome three way designs always work for me as long as drivers are integrated nicely. I'm actually planning on pulling the trigger on the Elysian 3's you previously reviewed as I've owned an enjoyed the Evo sound before and have a preference for those aesthetics.

On the manufacturers web site they have these speakers the other way round ie tweeter and mid are on the outside not inside ? Well done see you change they over at 20 min.
I show both but it’s to do with their distance apart, up to a certain distance 3 metres I think it’s suggested tweeters out which takes some getting used to as you think it will sound weird but it doesn’t
A manufacturer buddy of mine in New Jersey thought these sounded fantastic (he owns Vandersteen 7's FWIW)
In this hobby, price rarely dictates overall quality and satisfaction, especially over the long haul, these Atalante's seem like a proverbial deal (I own Audio Solution Figaro L's FWIW)
Look very nice and the specs are respectable. Very similar to GR- Research old school Brute DIY in many ways.

They need a while to break in but yes sounded great straight out of the box. 👌🏼 nice review I agree with you on just about everything

Hi there, sorry to ask you about another speaker that you are familiar with. Please help me decide for home theatre between Arendal 1973 monitors or Kef R3 both with matching centre speakers.
I have the Atlante 3. Fabulous imaging and scale. bass is great too but when positioned close (0.5) rear wall.
Do they sound neutral/warm/smooth?

Thank you very much, to be honest I did thinak about my time with the scm 50 but that was so long ago its beyond my memory reference if that makes sense but yes there is some simlarity here too, but I think the SCM have a bit more mid range quality but the bass I think is likely better in the Atalante

I was so tempted by these given that they are kind of a neo Yammy NS1000 or much more inexpensive ATC 100, but I just don't have the room. They look great though.

Yeah thats an interesting speaker to me, its a little stange in terms of design but that always intrigues me
I am wondering where does the hype for those speakers come from? At Warsaw Audio Show 2023 they were playing those speakers together with Moonriver 404 SE amp, Oephi cables and Auralic Aries 2.1 streamer. They were sounding average at best. After some time they switched to Oephi Transcendence 2 standmount speakers and those blew the Atalante out of the water. There was no comparison. I stayed in this room for around 40 minutes more to appeciate the sublime sound of the Transcendence 2.
Their sound is unusual and takes a little time to appreciate, also they seem to like a big amp, more than most integrateds I think will deliver
They are SUMPTUOUS - beautiful colour (hints of brandy and tobacco!), surely the ultimate big vintage-style speakers? Not a fan of the grilles though. Dying to audition them now - thanks, Terry!

I like the grills. Similar to a two color scheme that Pioneer used in the mid seventies. Don't remember the model but I sold them in 1975 with the B.I.C. Venturi speakers. What a great demo School on Crime of the Century made!!

Excellent review! Reminds me of my old ADSL 1230s. And the sound from your description should be my cup of tea. The fact that it is French designed and manufactured is a definite plus. I like the looks. My only question would be whether the little ramp at the bottom would be sufficient to create the soundstage and imaging you've discussed. Or would that stand be better? Looking at the retailer list, I think it would probably be very hard to get in the US.
All my comments about the sound are based on the speakers being in the stands not on the floor, I should have tested on the floor but it didn’t make sense to me
@@PursuitPerfectSystem it's interesting to me because I tried out the zu audio dirty weekends and thought they needed such a tilt being so short. I used feet with different length screws. Ended up returning them. I thought Zu should have had their own solution and it's neat that this company does offer one.
You mentioned Altec Lansing speakers in the 1980's in your introduction, and that was interesting because I remember the model 301 from Altec Lansing in the 1980's as well. It was an overlooked gem back then, and I was wondering if it was the same designer?
They look like a stepped up Sony sscs5, and not in a bad way. Will have to find a way to hear them.
Well, the Japanese were ahead in the 80s and 90s in this race. They manufactured for asian market Vintage look three way classic monitors with absolute high-tech drivers, like Boron, Diamond, Ceramic, Beryllium, Carbon, Metal foam and certain organic and synthetic fibres. They often used composite mixed material like Boronized Titanium or Gaphite-Ceramic sandwich driver. So, REVIVAL actually dusted down what Japanese big brands were doing long time ago. Which is nice! Classic monitor look with high-tech drivers are must be available. Thank you for the presentation. I have seen these in Korean speaking video already and I was curious.

These are stunning looking speakers. Funny, I have refurbished Dutch 1980s vintage speakers that look very much the same and I love it. Somewhat smaller, the old but rejuvenated Translator Impact4 speakers sound close to Wharfedale Lintons, somewhat more analytic. Translator is out of business now, but back in the day in the Netherlands it was a Dutch alternative to B&W, so the Translator line of speakers wasn't cheap when new.
At €350 for the refurbished pair I was lucky to get them. Many younger people find them just 'too big' and miss out on what they can bring.
I'm sure the Translators will lose against the modern speakers presented here when it comes to sound, but for that €350 they have better looking grills 😊
By the way, a good track to test bass is "Hey Now" by London Grammar. A difficult one to get it just right.
To be fair early London Grammer the bass is very bloomed and hits quite low bloomed so its going to sound less than perfetc on most systems without bass management
@@PursuitPerfectSystem That's the value of this test case. It's supposed to sound a bit bloomed. If it doesn't, the system lacks bass. If it does too much and ruins the track, the system is too bass heavy. A delicate balance. If it works fine and without need of tone control, bass with almost all other rock music works as good as the system can deliver.
Terry, how do these speakers sound at low volumes like 60-65db? Does the sound stage collapse? What is the sweet spot in terms loudness/volume?
I wouldn’t like to say I would think fine but I don’t remember testing them that low sorry about that

This just goes to show that room acoustics/placement plays a significant factor in bass reproduction. Because in other reviews, bass was cited as being almost overpowering with this Atalante.
I think that is always a thing and why I always keep speakers in the same spot in the room as I know how the bass behaves there. My room is very treated maybe others have a lot of bass ringing and that is they have experienced this, but thats not the speaker.
EDIT maybe when they used them on the floor that boosted the bass because that would be giving a lot more room gain in the bass thats a possibilty

Wow these speakers are gorgeous. I would spend a little extra and get custom wood stands. The industrial look of the provided stands spoils the aesthetic.
where would you get the wooden stands from ?
Voices won't be dead center in the image right? The baffle is to wide for that or are they able to fix these physical limitations also nowadays?

@@PursuitPerfectSystem Great! I have "old" Hyperionsound HPS-938 speakers and these are still my favorite. These Atalante got my intrest but i'm also i trested in the newest speaker of clayton shaw, the Caladan i think it is. I heard many great things about it.

Please put a bit of 25mm ball blu tac in the middle as a foot, it's important you have 5 feet not 4
Will you please explain the 5 feet logic? If a cabinet is properly braced, insulated, and sitting on rubber isolators, why would an additional foot in the middle make a noticeable difference?
I watched a Korean video of two guys listening to the Atalante 5 and they were so deeply impressed with the bass, that every time they heard the concert bass drum (I think it was the music of Aaron Copland) they simply couldn't believe it. It even sounded impressive on my desktop speakers. Don't quite understand why Terry was initially disappointed. Knowing Dynaudio they only give you deep bass when it's there in the recording. I assume it's no different with Revival audio.
It depends on what your reference point is as always, there is a difference between deep bass and a lot of bass, deep from these yes I mentioned that but they are not as big in bass output as I was expecting them to be.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem What about the scale of the music or the instruments, Terry? That's what I think the Lintons do very well, a grand piano sounds like an actual grand piano in your room. I expect an even larger scale from the Atalante 5 (it's a much bigger speaker after all). I think that is what the Koreans where noticing. The scale of the bass drum, the timpani or the orchestra.
That is true and in a larger room than what I have I think the scale differences of everything could be a little more obvious, I think the Mission 770 sound bigger in scale compared to the Linton, not by much but a bit. The Atalante 5 sounds bigger at both extreme ends compared to the Mission, I mentioned this in the review so that could answer your question - but does it sound like a grand piano I dont know if any speaker does because we are listening what the microphones captured, I dont know about that I havent listened to enough grand pianos in real life.

I would yes but not everyone would
If you buy ATC or Yamaha ns-5000 , you will be dishing out 4 or 5 times more money. These sound just as good or better.
Really like your reviews, also this one. But - I cannot help but feel you're a little unsure about the Atalante 5 - although you cannot really put your finger on what's the thing...
Maybe it's that the big and bold appearance don't match the sonics?
Their build & drivers are reminiscent of ADS of the early ‘80’s.

@@PursuitPerfectSystem He passed away the 6 of november after a long cancer disease. In his youth, he lived in my town, Eupen in Belgium.
Early he began to build loudspeakers and this became his destination. He worked for several Hifi-Companys like Dynaudio, before he created Revival Audio.
He was only 62 years young 😥

I have literally never heard a soft-dome midrange that I didn't like.
Vintage Woofers that are designed to be Audiophile grade, are not as Efficient. They use larger and stronger magnets, to have much faster and stronger acceleration and cone control. This results in that Accurate Audiophile grade Bass, even with the larger sized drivers. If you want to see the Bass levels that they are Actually capable of... you have to commit the so called "Audiophile Sin" and use a little EQ... and Boost the lower frequencies a bit.
I have a pair of 1970s era EPI 100v speakers. 2-way, 8" power hungry woofers, and a unique Inverted tweeter, to produces the most impressively wide and Holographic 3D soundstage, that Ive ever experienced. They sound good as is... but... when you push them from mid-high, to near destruction levels of volume... they Really shine. That said... when I wanted more Bass Shaking power out of them... I just tweak the EQ... and you would not believe the difference it makes. They went from "Very Good" bass... to "FANTASTIC" bass.
Additionally, I place mine on the Floor, and near walls. That boosts the bass considerably. And because the Inverted tweeter is so "Wide" and "Emotive" you wont notice any difference in high range frequencies.. even when they are not at Ear levels. Heck, when I first got them, I had to partially place them under my desk. You would never have known it.. because the sound was still room filling, and the Image Details were unaffectedly flawless.
Way too many Audiophiles seem to be stuck on using various different high priced AMPs to get a certain "Colorization" (EQ) to their sound... but Snub the very idea of using an Actual EQ... But EQ can really show you what your speakers are actually capable of. The EQ will also likely be able to replicate any of the tonal differences that you notice, from different Amps.
Personally, Im not a fan of Ported speakers. I prefer Sealed, passive radiator, or Open baffle, as ports often create an Artificial / Droning sounding Fake-Bass. However, very large ports that are not "Tuned", can sometimes pass... as I believe larger sized ports are merely for equalizing air pressure, rather than to create a specific "bass sound" when air comes out of them. At lower volume levels.. tuned ports are not that much of an issue... but at medium to high volume levels... they sound dreadful, comparatively.
I currently drive my EPIs with a 30 yr old Pioneer 5.1 surround sound amp, with my sound signal coming directly from my PC, into the Amp. I use a software EQ, at the moment. Though, recently I did find some used EQ units... that I might hook up, to test them out. That said, its easier to just adjust the EQ at the PC... rather than walking over to a physical EQ unit.
If anyone finds the EPI's, make sure you get the Upgraded tweeter version. The older version is mounted to a fiber board backing. The newer version, which is far more accurate and detailed.. is typically mounted to a plastic bezel. Or you can buy a hand made upgraded version, from a former employee of the company... at the "humanspeakers"' website. Also note, that EPI was bought out by "Genesis Physics", and they produced a lot of the same amazing speakers, using the same drivers, and design concepts.
I will add... that while the EPIs produce excellent mids, despite being a 2way... the best Mids I have ever experienced, came from a 2 or 3 inch dome midrange. Normally I find midrange frequencies can be a bit too Harsh... and have to dial them back a bit. However... the speaker with the Dome mid.. made the midrange sound so much more pleasurable. Very pronounced and warm, without being harsh at all. It was truly magical.

But I should be clear, that my post wasnt just about EQ for a certain kind of speaker.
In fact, all speakers have their own strengths and weaknesses, colorization, bass performance tunings... And when you couple all of that... with the AMP's possible Colorizations (such as a lack of enough bass), AND... you factor in the Positioning and the ROOM itself.. which could be eating some of the highs / lows... You realize that a little EQ tweaking can often Solve many of these issues.
In the case of the EPI's, which are Sealed speakers.. they take a lot more power before they get Excited and Dynamic.
The effect is even more pronounced with Passive Radiator speakers.. where you need to hit a certain volume / air pressure levels.. before the passives really start to get Movin, and Thumpin hard.
I noticed this, when I had a Phillips boom box system, that had special WOOX Passive Radiators in it. At low volume levels.. there was very little bass. But at high volume levels.. those little 6.5" woox speakers put out deeper thumpin bass than my former 12" woofer house speakers.
To solve this issue... Phillips included a special "EQ Mode" toggle on its boom box. This mode would boost the low frequencies... which got the passives excited at much lower volume levels. Of course, at high volume levels... you often would have to turn that toggle off... or things would be a little too over-exaggerated. That of course, also depended on how Bassy the actual music you were playing, was recorded / mastered.
Also note, that all recordings are not the same. Recordings in the late 70s and all into the 80s... were recorded without much compression at all. This makes them FAR more DYNAMIC... but, it comes at the cost of needing more Amp power, to get them Loud enough. Also, the bass levels on the 80s recordings is often less pronounced. As such, some EQ can help tweak certain recordings, to be a bit more Lively, and to help boost the slightly weak bass levels.
On the other hand.. things recorded in the 90s and beyond, have been heavily Compressed. Most of the songs sound FLAT, distorted, and annoying... especially at mid to higher volume levels. There is little that can be done to help these... but sometimes some EQ tweaks can make them slightly less painful. For example.. reducing the "over-boosted" midrange presence.
Some recordings might have high frequencies that are too Harsh (often an issue with Electronic and Synth based music) ... and even good tweeters that are designed to roll off a lot of the harshness... may still present things in a very Fatiguing way. As such, dialing down the Treble a bit, can help.
So... with a little EQ tweaking, you can correct some of these recording Issues, and also... be able to maximize your drivers potentials, when you want some extra "Grunt".
One could say, that its like adding some Salt and Pepper, to a slightly Bland dish.
Ohh, one last Factor that I just remembered... and that is, that everyone hears differently. Some of this can be due to different Shapes of your ears (satellite dish shaped ears, likely amplify sounds very differently than flatter ear shapes). Some ears may have a lack of sensitivity, and or hearing damages. As such, you often need to tweak your music, to suit your own ears, and inner head translation. What sounds perfect to me.. might sound lacking, to you.

Im noticing a trend, every audio review i watch lately (not just this channel) the most recent product they review is their favourite and better than the product they reviewed last week.
So either speakers, amps dacs, etc are improving at an alarmingly fast rate that no human being could possibly keep up with, or.......................
It would be nice to SEE 👀 these audio reviewers demonstrate how good they are at hearing the differences they claim to hear, thats all i ask, because talk is cheap.
And if you can't SHOW it
You don't KNOW it.
So SHOW us
Your criticism I totally understand and your right to question this as some “reviewers” promote stuff to you so you buy it through their affiliate links - if you check I have no affiliate links for these speakers.
How do you want me to show it to you. I could measure the speakers that would show you nothing really. I have made over 300 sound demo videos but stopped because it’s so much time spent sometimes for nothing.
I never expect someone to take my word for anything go and listen for yourself. But I don’t always say this is better than the last and I didn’t say that in this video either.
I said “I like” and “I prefer” that’s totally different to better or best

It's not criticism, it's an observation.
I understand it takes time to demonstrate that you can hear the differences you claim to be hearing.
Everyone seems to have an excuse why they can't show us what they claim to know.
I can't listen to any audio gear, there are no shops where I live.
I think you can make the same arguement in reverse in terms of excuses, there are no shops where you live which is sad but then maybe it would good in that situation to travel and visit whatever shows are closest to you. There is only so much someone like me can do there is no way of me showing you what I hear I have tried.

There is a way to show how you can hear the differences between gear, but nobody wants to ruin their credibility by doing it because they know they'll make themselves look foolish.
You cant just say there is a way without explaining what that way is :) ?

Take them apart , most of these hi end speakers use cheap components, bracing and wiring.
I wouldn’t say the cabinets damping is as good as the Wharfedale elyisian or the mission 770, the internal cabling is from van den hul so decent quality.
