  • This is my video review of the Dynaudio EVOKE 20 HiFi Speakers and as part of the review I will be comparing them to the EVOKE 10 speakers to see if Bigger is Best??
The Evoke 20 are a two way hifi loudspeaker featuring interesting Dynaudio technologies such as the Cerotar tweeter featuring Hexis technology and the MSP Mid Bass Driver.
This is review also marks the start of a stand mount speaker group test I am conducting where I will be reviewing and comparing 8 different stand mount hifi speakers priced to £2000. Speakers included are from JBL, Neat Acoustics, Arendal, System Audio, Dynaudio, Sonus Faber

Outstanding as always Terry. Thank you for your honesty both technically and with your personal opinion of a speaker. Even though both this and the previous test groups are beyond my budget I find your reviews and comparisons fascinating. I can't wait to see how the remaining speakers will perform/compare as the Evoke 20's have set the bar very high right out of the gate. Keep up the great work.

Bought a set a few weeks ago, i demo’d the evoke 10, 20, 30 & special 40. The 20’s just have so much excitement, with excellent midrange. I actually went in wanting the 30’s, but the 20’s were just too good. The guy in the hifi shop (signals hifi, very knowledgeable) said they had a guy in a few days before me who said the exact same thing - he also ended up going for the 20’s! They are superb!

Nice review Terry! I am actually using the Evoke 20's for mixing and mastering in my studio. I am driving them with an ELAC Alchemy DPA2 at 325 watts a side. I like them for their neutrality and my mixes translate very well. I am also very partial to the Dynaudio sound. Thank you for the great reviews. I recently purchased the Dynaudio Evoke 20 to replace a pair of SVS Ultra Bookshelf. Once past the "ear adjustment period", I find these are so much more balanced and warm than the SVS. I much prefer to listen for extended periods to the Dynaudio. I still have a week or so of "trial period", but I don't think I'll be sending them back. Your reviews comparing various speakers against other similarly priced products are enormously helpful in narrowing down the many choices. Great job!

Great review Terry, well done! Very interesting to see the comparison with the Evoke 10 and difference in treble energy.
I use a total of five Evoke 20’s in my dedicated hometheater room (paired with Arcam AVR850/P429 and two 15” F15HP subwoofers from Rythmik) and I am VERY pleased with the dynamics and overall sound quality, both for music and movies. I know Dynaudio very well and have owned many different models in the past but these big standmounts have really suprised when it comes to dynamics and speed.
One thing I must mention: (the cabinets of) the Evoke 20’s are very sensitive to the type of standmounts used and the type of coupling/decoupling used on the standmounts. Only after putting Isoacoustic Gaia III’s to my Dynaudio stand 10’s did the Evoke’s show me their true potential. It made an astonishing difference, with more energy and more space around the speakers.

My evoke 20 are connected to a Gato Audio Dia-250s-npm (changed the Arcam sa30 which I had ordered, a lovely sounding amp, but I could not cope with all the software issues; the streaming app was awful), the app is mcontrol, a slight better than heos, but the problem is we end up stacking loads of albums on Tidal resulting in difficulty accessing music - Roon seems to be a possible solution for this...

I suspect that pop and rock fans would much prefer Emit over Evoke. Emit has good detail plus that midrange slam that analytical speakers like Evoke seem to lack.

I'm sitting this one out Terry. Mostly because I believe that KEF Meta LS50s with a pair of REL subs will likely surpass any speaker up to $5k.
I'm hopeful that in the future you will have the opportunity to do a Floorstanding speaker comparison in the 5-10K price range. Thank you always for your excellent work.

Yes, yes it is! And that is something that's definitely best avoided in this hobby from my personal experience. You never know, until you know. I've learned to never assume anything in this hobby, and to keep an open mind.
In fact, just like life, the more I learn. The more I realize I've really no clue, and will consider myself very lucky if I ever manage to get to the level that some guys are at when it comes to system matching/tuning in my lifetime. I'm just not that ambitious, nor that well off.
And I fear I took too long of a break off from the hobby to ever get there at this point. But maybe that's for the best. I thoroughly enjoy learning, and trying gear anyway. Besides, knowing everything (not very likely, for anyone, anyway. I suppose) would be very, very boring. What would I do then? I would have to get a new hobby. 😊

@@amb3cog I agree with your sentiments and I'm probably similar to you anyway. I've been in this hobby on and off for 30 years, but sometimes I think I'm still completely clueless too. I could probably spend a lot more on my system, but having recently bought new speakers, I limited my budget to £1500 and decided to audition just 2 different pairs on the basis that I'd just confuse myself even more and be further away from making a decision if i auditioned lots. I have a system that works for me and just enjoy reading about the new gear and developments. Ironically, I didn't even consider the KEF Meta LS50s, because to me they're aesthetically ugly, irrespective of what they sound like!
