I totally believe that his parents neglected him. His parents were awful to Steven when he came home- the made him go on national television just two weeks after being rescued to talk about being kidnapped, they wouldn't let him go to counseling (claiming that he didn't 'need it') and their father partially blamed Steven for being raped (Steven said that his father never looked at him and barely talked to him after finding out, father said he didn't know what to do) and kicked Steven out of the house when he was still a teenager because he was smoking pot. Their parents were obsessed with having a picture-perfect image without actually parenting their kids

One relative in the family (likely the uncle who was mentioned early in the video), was a sexual predator. The adults all knew and told the kids to "stay away" from that individual. This further explains why the parents didn't want any of their kids (including Steven, after he returned home) to receive psychiatric help.

My mom grew up in Merced and went to high school with the Stayners. My aunt was of the same graduating class as him and my mom was two years younger. Stephen’s kidnapping was tragic and well known throughout Merced. Stephen’s motorcycle crash happened on a rainy night right outside of the vet clinic that my parents met at while working there. My mom said that stephen’s kidnapping and early death “really messed Carey up.” So sad and tragic, and I had no idea until watching this video as asking my mom about him

The feckless parents were at least emotionally neglectful before 7-year-old Steven was abducted. The kidnapper simply told him his parents didn't want/couldn't afford him anymore, and he meekly accepted that as fact. Blaming a 7 year old for his abduction is beyond the pale. Whatever faults the parents might have had, the only person responsible for the kidnapping is Kenneth Parnell. Of course a 7-year-old is not to "blame." The point is he didn't take the many chances he had to escape because he thought his parents didn't want him anymore. It wasn't until his evil captor kidnapped another young boy that Steven realized he'd been lied to. His mother was dysfunctional and neglected the family while obsessing over his loss, that was a background factor in brother Cary's murder sentence. Her parents grieved her sister and pushed her into the shadows all her life, treating her poorly and essentially neglecting her which led to her drug use. She didn’t murder anyone, but she did get hooked on opioids and I believe relapsed and died after being sober for some time. It’s just a tragic situation all around.

Any one of us are capable of psychotic behaviors. We just haven't necessarily been in the situation to bring forth that behavior. Some of us experience situations that could lead to something like this, but I assume most of us work very hard not to allow our situations to define us. So we fight against bad thoughts everyday, we grow, we try to be better, we try to do good and not evil. So many of us do good things without reward. Even if it's the smallest of deeds, we try to work against wrath and bad habits. We try to heal ourselves without anybody having the slightest clue as to what we are battling.
Though I can play devil's advocate and understand trauma in childhood can lead to destructive behavior, I have to commend those who have been through it, who are going through it, who are working on healing themselves and who are not hurting people solely because someone hurt you in the past or present. I commend all those who try everyday to be a better person without as much as a pat on the back. You are who I am writing this for. I send you love, well wishes and understanding.

So much tragedy in this family. I remember seeing the made for tv movie about Steven many years ago, and then hearing years later that after all he had gone through to get home to his family, they lost him to a motorcycle accident. My heart broke for them that they were robbed of his childhood, then finally brought him home, only to lose him again. Then many years later I heard about Cary, and was shocked to learn that he had become a serial murderer. I wonder if the trauma Cary experience in childhood had anything to do with his actions

Oh gosh, this was in my home-town, population 1,700 peeps 😔 Merced, Cathey's Valley-(where Steven was kept) Mariposa, El Portal, Yosemite. We all went down to Merced once a month to do grocery shopping...we were all scared to death wondering who it might be, a friend's husband had a back-ground check done on him and found HIDEOUS stuff in his past, but it wasn't him. Then we found out we had all been swimming and hanging out with Stayner down at The Merced River🤢😱😱😨
Mariposa is CURSED, our sheriff ran head-on into Queen Elizabeths calvacade in 1983, killing one of her body guard peeps while she was on her way to visit Yosemite National Park😔

I stayed there twice, once in 2007 when my family was visiting from Denmark, and again in 2014 when my Swedish girl friend was visiting. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, for years I have been visiting Yosemite, usually on Memorial Day with the Young Scandinavian Club (San Francisco) we would stay in the park at the cabin or the tent cabin, I just love Yosemite. I followed both the Steven Stayner case, not his kidnapping, since I didn't live in California at that time, but remember when he rescued Timothy White. I also followed the Sund and Cary Stayner case closely, especially since the Sunds was from the Bay Area. I knew the Cedar Lodge was where Cary Stayner worked, but it was close to the park and I figure what happened would not happen again. When I checked in I was struck my a sign on the front desk, that cautioned guests to not let anybody in their room. Both my stays was uneventful and pleasant.

Many times after a video I am reminded of other complex scenarios and I have so many questions for you. I would love to hear your thoughts about the Schofield children, Jani and Bodhi. Did they get the correct diagnoses? Were they over medicated for all the wrong reasons? Did the mother, Susan, knowingly abuse her children to satisfy her own mental illness? Do these children have any hope for a happy life, or were they actually chemically lobotomized legally right in front of so many board certified psychiatrists. Are there any important lessons we as a society can at least learn from all of this? Thank you so much, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Dr. Grande I browsed through your true crime documentaries to make sure you haven't talked about these killers I've listed here and they're not listed. These are the cases that have really stuck with me. 1. Colonel Russell Williams in Canada killed women, stole their panties and bras, put them on and took pictures of himself wearing them. The interrogator was INCREDIBLY BAD ASS !!! 2. Stephanie Lazarus a police officer who murdered wife of her friend with benefits, and was finally caught using DNA. Her interrogation by fellow officers is on CZcams, and it was flawless. 3. Oba Chandler killed 3 women on vacation. He lured them with the invitation to a ocean guided boat tour. He was put to death recently. He was caught because of his original way of writing. 4. Byron Smith murdered 2 teenagers who had previously targeted his home many times. He recommended the whole event. This one I have to warn everyone that the recording is extremely unnerving because you will hear the entire murder take place even as he is confronting them, the gun shots, the sound of them dying etc..just be warned. 5. The double murder of Channon Christian and her bf Chris Newsom, in Knoxville, Tennessee.
