I had a friend make the mistake of driving her car home from the bar on the weekend of her 21st birthday. She wasn’t hammered but definitely shouldn’t have been driving. Got pulled over less than half a block from her apartment. Cop knew she was buzzed. Took one look at her license and asked where she was headed. Told him right there and pointed to a parking space maybe 30 yards away. Cop asked for the keys and told everyone to get out of the car. Cop got in, parked her car, came back and said ‘happy birthday. If I see your car on the road again tonight, your toast’ and walked away.
She never drove after drinking again

Over a decade ago, I was employed as a van driver. That one night, I drove over to my friends place, in my company van after work, ended up partying hard, drinking a lot, etc. It was 1am when I decided it's time to drive home, about 2 miles through a small irish town, where there is hardly ever any police present (in Ireland called "Garda"). As I'm driving (shamelessly drunk) home, I pass a police car, which almost immediately turns its lights and sirens on, turns around and catches up to me. My heart stopped. I stopped the van at the roadside, police car parks right behind me, blue lights flashing, the cop walks up to my van and slightly angrily asks "what's up with my speed?!" and claims that I "flew by" when I passed him. I reacted with genuine surprise, saying "well, as a company driver, driving hundreds of miles per working day, I get used to going through the roundabouts right at the (city) speed limit (30mph)". The cop mumbled something to me angrily, which I didn't quite understand, walked off to his squad car and drove away. I was shocked he didn't smell booze off me. I was most definitely drunk, no question. For some time I sat there in the van, heart beating like crazy, realized that I almost got arrested for drink-driving, consequently almost lost my job, thus my income etc. Had that policeman smelled booze off me, that encounter would have gone WAY different. That was the very last time I ever drove under influence. Ever.

Bollea (NICK HOGAN) previously made headlines in the late 2007 when he, at the age of 17, was involved in a serious crash that left him and his friend, John Graziano, in Bayfront Hospital. According to Sam & Ash Injury Law, Bollea pled no contest to a charge of reckless driving in May 2008, receiving a sentence of eight months in the county jail and five years of probation. Graziano’s family also sued Bollea and Hulk Hogan for the victim’s injuries, WHICH LEFT HIM PARALYZED AND IN NEED OF NURSING CARE FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE! The lawsuit ended in a $1.5 million settlement.

Here in Europe, it's much simpler: you blow into the device and if it shows a value that's too high, you're taken to the station to blow into a calibrated device. This way, both sides have objective and reliable values. Not like a test that you can fail even when sober.

He couldn't do the circus test on the side of the road and refused the to blow. In Oregon - if you're sh*t faced it's best to take the hit of being suspended for a year than to get a full on DUII. He was a 100 miles down the freeway from me - so my mom was closer and immediately picked him up from jail. No 8 hours. He's never driven under the influence again. I'm so glad he was pulled over. He could have killed someone - or killed himself. He was that drunk. Had he been closer - I would have showed up. He's my son. I'll always be there there for him - not cuddling - but I'll always be there for my kid. He's 36 now and doing just fine.

My former attorney (more of a friend and mentor, the legal work came for free, RIP) gave me the same advice as Bruce: "Don't blow." I asked why, he said, "They don't give you a receipt, and cops lie." Good enough. Well, I made the mistake of applying his advice to another state, and I got in a whole heap of trouble for it. I hired an excellent lawyer and got it all cleared up, preserving my still spotless criminal record, but it cost me a pretty penny. That cop was a boy scout. In that state (MD), I'd have been a lot better off if I'd just blown into the damn thing and gone about my day.

If I do ever get pulled over and am asked to do a field sobriety test in my home town though, I will literally tell the cop only as long as he does one too. My bf got rear-ended at a red light by a drunk town cop in his cruiser, so it's them we have to worry about getting drunk and running around on the roads hurting innocent people, not me who doesn't really enjoy the feeling of being drunk in the first place, let alone behind the wheel drunk, that's insane.
