The ending keeps being as poetic and horrifying as it was the first time I watched it. "Which would be worse, to live as a monster or die as a good man?" and the way he smokes in the end (he didn't want to smoke as Teddy) tells us that he still remembered being Andrew and didn't regress this time. He just couldn't live with what happened to his wife and children. And the way his psychiatrist seems to realize he is pretending at the last minute, but he is already leaving by his own will and he lets him go. So many heartbreaking stuff in such a brief moment. Thanks for this reaction.

I think there's a nice, subtle button on the end of that moment as well that most people miss: After Andrew delivers the line "Which would be worse, to live as a monster or die as a good man?" he gets up and walks off to get lobotomized. Chuck stands up and calls after him, "Teddy...?" (the false identity Andrew had adopted for his fantasy world) but Andrew doesn't respond, he just keeps walking... because he's not Teddy and they both know it.

What's lowkey fucked up about it is that it was considered a radical ( experimental ) treatment and that it worked and could have possibly helped others ( in the movie's universe ) but likely won't happen again because they feel it didn't work.

what really happened is Andrew woke up permanently and ACTUALLY DIDNT REGRESS!!! you can see it in his eyes/emotions. such a great actor and movie. the final scene was him saying he would rather "die" than live with the knowledge of what really happened. he never wanted help in the first place. he wanted to live in that fantasy, so he could live at all. he chose suicide by lobotomy

It’s more that it’s impossible for him to be lying. Andrew believes he’s his partner, so for him to admit to being someone else is the stone cold proof that Daniels is made up.

At the end u kinda missed it. He was cured but he would rather get lobotomized and forget everything than to "live a monster" knowing he killed his wife. So he chose to "die as a good man" by getting lobotomized.

The facial expressions of the workers, the guards being on guard all the time when Laeddis is around because he's the most dangerous patient, etc.

I feel this movie was rlly important - it told everyone who had a relative or spouse or anyone in their lives who was mentally ill that when they do things like set apartments on fire or tell you they have an insect in their brain, that you should NOT ignore it because one day something like drowning your kids can happen. Andrew Laeddis's character represents the worst case scenario of disregarding serious mental health ailments that can potentially wreck everything.

Thank you for reacting to one of my all-time personal favourite psychological horror drama films which is a rarity of Martin Scorsese to direct given his high profile for Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino and recently Killers of the Flower Moon.
It took me 3 times to watch the film to see the signs that Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis (cool fictional character names) is not who we thought he is. At the end of the film, his last words “What could be much worse in this place: live as a monster or die as a good man” is an indicator that Laeddis opted out for the “lighthouse icepick” due to the fact he got to the point of no longer handling the trauma of killing his wife for killing his kids and not wanting to regress restarting the entire cutting-edge roleplay all over again.
As much as I know that it was all a roleplay: I loved the scene of Dr Rachel Solando in the cave, got a feeling it’s real (yet Dr Cawley brushed it off as fake hallucinations in Laeddis’ mind) as I could see this play a role in the plot of a continuation miniseries that I call “Escape From Shutter Island”.
No matter if he was thinking of something in the past that’s true or not - the US army liberation of Dachau (among the early Nazi campsites to appear in the Holocaust) resulted in the soldiers and surviving Holocaust prisoners participated in a revenge killing (execution squad-esque) on the camp guards except those who faced the music in the criminal courts. It did happen in our world.
An investigation conducted by US army Lieutenant-colonel Joseph Whittaker was suppressed by US army general George Patton and a Bavaria governor to cover up what Laeddis described as “not warfare but murder [on both sides]”. I do believe Laeddis’ involvement in the Dachau liberation and revenge killings was true.

My favorite part of rewatching Shutter Island is the theme of fire vs water. Whenever Andrew is around fire, it represents his perception of what happened and the water represents reality and the truth. Notice how whenever he’s dreaming, it’s water that wakes him up. We even see him get sick at the beginning because of the water.
