Despite what I feel about Otto, you can't deny that Viserys failed all of his children with Alicent. Like...none of them mourne md his death. These people have no reason to want anything to do with their Targaryen side outside of their dragons.

The writers did a fantastic job making Aegon sympathetic in this scene. You can clearly see that he has been neglected and ignored. Even his mother can't say she truly loves him. I hope they develop upon this reluctance to rule in the second season, and not make him a Joffrey clone.

I've read this so much here that Alicent probably didn't love him bc she didn't say it but all those people seem to forget that she didn't hesitate for one second to stand between her son and a bloody dragon, instinctively shielding him even if it meant burning herself. Also, the only reason she even wanted Aegon to become king was that she feared, Rhaenyra would kill him to secure her claim once she became Queen. Alicent may have had her flaws as a mother, but her love for her children is completely out of question.

      @eiji862 Před rokem +11

@@GenUrobutcher I can’t say that she doesn’t love her child. Alicent never wanted the life she had. She loved Rhaenyra, the two were practically sisters to one another. The majority of her choices she made in conspiring against Rhaenyra came from a place of fear (instilled by her father who just wanted power) and betrayal (she wanted to give Rhaenyra the benefit of the doubt about whether or not Rhaenyra “degraded” herself by having sex with Daemon in a brothel). Alicent didn’t believe her father’s accusations of Rhaenyra being a threat to her and her children. But when she caught Rhaenyra in a bold face lie, she came to the realization that perhaps Rhaenyra is no longer the sister that she once adored but the enemy. So to say that Alicent doesn’t love her children is simply untrue. One of her motivations for doing what she did to instill Aegon as King was to protect her children, to protect him. She had been instilling the fear of death into him since he was but a child. Saying to him that his very existence is a threat to Rhaenyra and her reign. Plus when she has that pause to consider what Aegon said to her when he asked if she truly loved him, I don’t think that was her lying when she responded. My reasoning is that if she didn’t love Aegon, then why would she go through all the trouble of getting him to be King when he doesn’t want it, especially when Aemond did want it and was technically next in line if something mysterious were to happen to Aegon. If Alicent didn’t love Aegon as you suggest, then why not kill him? Up until the moment she convinced him to take the throne, he’s been a burden on the family. Bottom line, Alicent does lover her children, in her own way. Sure it’s not perfect but no relationship is.

@Septic Neuron LOL I only denouce bad critiques of the show. You wrote all that and assumed a bunch of BS based on nothing just because you right-wing reactionaries got a chip on your shoulder. GRRM ain't a right-wing reactionary or a misogynist so I imagine women in the story will continue to get more nuance than you would give them if you were in charge of the story.
So what if Larys has a fixation on his crippled foot that transates into a fetish? It's better than what Fire and Blood gave us where we have little to no insight into what he thinks on anything. He's just a generic backstabber in the source text. Most of the characters the show focuses on are more nuanced and layered than what Fire and Blood gave us, Aemond included who was basically a caricature in the book. GRRM even said Viserys on the show was a lot more interesting and nuanced than Viserys in the book.
As for the action..oh yeah I'm so sure you wouldn't have been right here saying how boring the show was if we got 10 episodes without that one measly 5 minute-long battle in the Stepstones (which was shot beautifully and quite engaging tbh). I guess that was too much action for you LOL. I'm also sure in a show about the Dance of the Dragons there won't be any action at all...I mean...I can't take you seriously at all, dude. And as if people talking couldn't be interesting in and of itself and as if the show hadn't been exactly that all this time. You gotta stop making me laugh with your pathetic takes, dude.
I loved most of all of GOT and I watched that show since 2012. Season 8 features 2 of the best episodes of the entire show imo. Also you know both shows released weekly, right? Bingewatching would not be possible unless one wanted to wait for 10 weeks.
Also you gotta stop thinking there is 1 single way to say a show is either brilliant or trash. There's a lot of in-between and what anyone thinks depends in any case on what they consider to be good or bad. There are potentially 7 billion opinions on this show out there, none of them the "right one" because all art is subjective but maybe you aren't able to grasp that concept just yet.
The writers are real writers and also ain't gonna change because the showrunner wrote most of the show and approved what was written by others and GRRM is more deeply involved with the show anyway. Good times for us, bad times for you I fear LOL.

I don’t think so. Despite her flaws as a mother, Alicent does love her children very much in a weird way. When Rhaenys attacked the coronation, she stepped right in front of her son in order for her to get burned first before him, trying to protect him from Meleys. One of the main reasons she is doing all of this is to protect her kids because she knows that if Rhaenyra succeeds Viserys, she might kill all of her children to secure her claim to the throne especially since she is now married to Daemon of all people. Plus, Alicent strongly defended Aemond for his injures when she could’ve just sided with Rhaenyra on the matter. She comforted Helaena in that brief clip regarding Vaemond’s death and ordered Criston to protect her only daughter while she went for Aegon. In the end, there is certain evidence to show that Alicent loves her children, even though they turned out a little unusual.

Part of why she acted as erratically in epsiodes 6 and 7 was because she had been convinced of the idea that her children would be killed should Rhaenyra ascend the throne....this is a big part of why she does everything she can to undermine Rhaenyra. It's fair to say that she does not want her children to die but she is mistaken as to the likelihood of that happening, given who Rhaenyra is at this stage. It indicates that she does love them.

@@JimmySteller Ob boy where should I start. I will use both information from the series and book.
First disregard of the smallfolk. In the book she calls them vermin and other stuff.
Second no concept for money. She is 18 when she is in Kingslanding and doesn't seem to know or understand that you have to pay for food. She bites of something, throws it back at the person selling the food ( idk the word salesperson? I'm not from an english speaking country ).
Later she doesn't realize how costly it is to hold the stepstones and built military outposts there. Lastly her taxes she is going to do. They are very high and the people of Kingslanding can't afford them, but she is too far removed from everyday life, that she is unable to recognise what people can and can't do for her. Also her taxing having "bastard" children. Your child was born outside of marriage, now pay me is rediculous.
Third she doesn't understand the game of thrones at all. It is teasered already in ep 4 or 5, that she believes that it is possible to do politics without any of the nobles or houses having self interest.... Yeah. We also see this when she sends Luce with nothing to lord Borros Baratheon. Jace could get the Vale and the north, because he is charismatic and made marriage pacts. He bethrothed his younger brother Joffrey to the Vale and his unvonceived, unborn daughter to lord Cregan Stark. He stayed there a few weeks, they hunted together and he really made an impression.
What has Rhaenyra done in the past? She alienates houses as seen on her tour to find a husband by insulting them, encourages a fight between Bracken and Blackwood. Not that they need encouragement, but she should have broken it up. She insults lady Redwyne in Ep 3. She insults other noble houses when choosing a kingsguard. The right thing would have been to listen to everyone with patience and then choosing who you think is right and thank everyone for attending.
There is so much more, but the comment is already long as it is. She doesn't have what it takes to be a good politician. I think she was spot on in episode 1, when she said, she wants to ride on dragonback with her friend, see the wonders of the word and eat only cake. I think she would have been very happy without politics. She's just not good at it.
In that case you could say let her small council reign. But her small council is not very competent either....

2:04 Aegon is perhaps the most tragic character in HOTD. Here we have someone who was ignored by his father in favor of his sister and abused by his mother. He was forced to marry his sister at a young age and was used by the Hightowers as a political tool despite not wanting to be king. Yet he did it anyways to please his mother. Even what happened with Ayana can be somewhat explained. Because no one loved Aegon including his wife he went after a woman who took care of him and reminded him of his mother.
While Aegon may not be a good person I think it's important to remember that Aegon was conditioned from an early age to be what he is.

She wanted her children in power and she never wavered from that. It's why I will ALWAYS prefer and respect her over many in this series. She owned her shit. Do you think Cersei would allow that flimsy excuse of Viserys words to kickstart her already preconceived idea that her son would be King? No. She'd just do it. No prostration. No excuses.

Looking at Aegon in this episode, I'm strongly reminded of a joke from The Editing Room. In one of their abridged scripts, they cover a film which features a character in a similar position to Aegon. The script has him declare incredulously: "So your plan was to cut me off from my passions, force me into a loveless marriage, generally abuse and alienate me, and then...make me your ruler?"
I think about that line whenever I see a scenario like Aegon's. Like, that scene where he glances coldly at each of his family members expecting them to bow to him as he's crowned king. All of them look apprehensive or reluctant as they bow, and I'm just baffled. Did they have no notion that he might not take kindly to the way they've treated him all his life?

She always mistreated him, that is doubtless. But that's not because she doesn't love him. Alicent does everything for her children even though it does not look like it.
After all she has no reason to fear from Rhaenyra, because she never posed any threat to Rhaenyra's succession.
But we know very well where Rhaenyra's morality lies. She shed no tears for her son's father after his death. She did not show even the smallest amount of grief for someone she supposedly "loved". She wasn't touched when her father died either, only after learning, that Aegon was crowned. She got rid of her prievous husband, and lied about not having any relation in his "death".
Alicent had every reason to worry about her sons, and no one worries for someone they don't love. Also don't forget, when Rhaennys intervened the coronation, and directed Meleys towards the greens she literally stood in front of him, protecting him with her own body.
So by imbecile she meant: "Why would you even ask that, isn't it obvious?"

ffs Aegon already makes his bastard offsprings fight in a pit against other. HE ISN'T EVEN AN ADULT YET.

In the unlikely event I ever have children. I my greatest hope is that they will never have reason to wonder if I or their mother loves them.
Just to be on the safe side. I am no way trying to excuse, justify, or defend Aegon atrocious behavior. But I think the fact he smiled as he declared that Viserys did not love him and appeared genuinely curious when he asked Allicent if she loves him goes a long way in explaining how he ended up the way he did.

Even Aegon knows this coup is unmitigated horseshit. Nothing more than Otto and Alicent committing treason. In her heart of hearts, even she doesn't believe Viserys wanted Aegon king.

I don’t understand how Alicent (or anyone else) could possibly believe they’re protecting him by declaring him King. You’re doing the opposite of protecting him- you’re putting a giant fucking target on his back. The King already named his heir. Do we not all know how this turned out? Instead of trying to make amends with Rhaenyra they went to war/did what they thought was best to “protect” their children and almost everyone was killed. The dragons soon became extinct. Rhaenyras line inherited the throne anyway. Rhaenyras definitely not perfect but she’s miles above Aegon. You know, the guy who rapes his servants and watches orphans fight to the death and literally admitted he has no interest in ruling. If you’re pro green I want to shake you

Because in their eyes, Rhaenyra asks Aemond to be sharply questioned ( tortured ) after he says the truth, kills her husband, marries the most cruel person who HATES Otto and Alicent and is known for killing his first wife, then kills Vaemond , even thought the king's order is to cut his tongue.
The greens had no choice but declare Aegon king to get power. Otherwise , Rhaenyra would take the crown, put her people into power and it would be easier to her to kill her brothers.
Rhaenyra's reign is doomed to end up with war, either between her/ her children and her brothers or between her 3 bastards sons with her 2 legitimate sons. The bastard problem would last for generations. That's why GRRM killed her 3 bastards in the book, otherwise there would have been another dance.

...In the story, Alicent is Aegons mother. Not even the Valyrians married their parents and considered it gross af. The only one who was RUMORED to have commited such an act is a man literally called "Aegon the Unworthy" who was said to have fucked his bastard daughter. And even then it was a rumour.

Yes. You Are Wrong. It's Okay To Ship The Actors, But Not The Characters. Even In Old Valyria, Children Did Not Marry Their Mothers or Fathers.
