Good catch, I did not connect those two dots.

Alicent's only mistake was telling Rhaenys "you are the queen who should've been" not knowing that her words will spark encouragement in Rhaenys to support Rhaenyra, the queen who is being supplanted just like she had been in the past.
But rhaenyra is nothing like rhaenys. At all. Just because they share the same girl parts doesn't mean they share the same character or values.
@@Ready-ForTheEnd that's literally all it has come down to. Rhaenys telling Alicent that all she's done is serve men (her husband, her father and her son) but has she never imagined herself on the iron throne.
The story relies heavily on the gender struggles of being a woman. Despite being the rightful heir, Rhaenyra's claim is being put into question based on her lady parts by half the realm.
Rhaenyra's succession was being challenged because of her lost "purity" which would not be the case at all had she been born with a cock (see: Aegon II).
I disagree with your statement. They are the same character writ twice.
@@Ready-ForTheEnd
Your comment misses the glaringly obvious, rheanyra doesn’t need to be exactly like her, infact that may be a good thing in her eyes, look how it turned out . Rheanys did everything ‘right’ and look how her life ended up. She’s a matriarch, she’s lost her children and now all she has left are granddaughters .
Supporting rheanyra either secures corlys bloodline or verifies that rheanys was right in abdicating all those years ago. Either way it goes, it serves her story.
Also the whole planet bent the knee for dany and 3 adolescent dragons despite all those years of mad Targaryen rule.
A female with decent PR and a fleet of dragons could easily rule, no force or army could stop them. The maesters finessed it and the lords helped them secure an easier manipulated monarch.

she can't kill them in their own castle without declaring to rhaenyra first or she would be called a kinslayer and a kingslayer. she doesn't want to dishonor herself and her house. she could've exited better but it was definitely the right move not to kill them. unsatisfying for sure but it would have made rulers dislike rhaenyra even more because killing the king and queen regent in their own house is dishonorable.

Doesn't make her a good mother really Doesn't change the fact that she doesn't give a shit about what her children wanted
@@shamaiahellis8810 Because in Westeros there is not what you want, only what you have to do otherwise you risk your life. Robb wanted to marry Talisa (in show, in books it made more sense but whatever) and boom, Red Wedding. Lyanna and Rhaegar wanted to run away together and it caused Robert's Rebellion. Cersei wanted to fuck Jaime and once that was discovered, her children were proclaimed illegitimate and then we had War of the Five Kings. Ofc, all 3 of these events had a lot of underlying reasons (Robb's bad decisions, rule of Mad King, Lysa wanting to climb on Petyr's Littlefinger) but these scenarios only worsened the whole thing that could have been much more easily avoided and maybe even completely prevented. There is a reason why in Westeros duty in noble houses is such a big thing. They are all extremely rich and powerful people in a time that's screwed to be alive in unless you are a noble so they are pretty lucky but that comes with a cost, which is a lack of freedom of personal choice

Yeah ppl rly outta respect Rhaenys. Last child of jaehaerys, lived to see her son, and daughter killed all in pursuit of legacy and power. Had she had the throne her family would be intact. And the bond between houses kept stronger. Just seeing all that potential pass by, leading up to her pretty much saying "i dont think so" is so good. When she got lost I was like "Great another Arya stark adventure" then she gazed into the depths of the dragon pit and I was like "OH FUK"
such a good episode. The build up, and the fight between who got to the heir first, that heir not wanting it and being a hungover mess, and despite us hating Aemond and Christian, they technically held the will of the queen, which was to get to the heir before her father could. Making her decision to assert aegon, imo, that much more believable, but also I was kinda rooting for her. Yeah Cole killed that one dude and supports the queen, I dont like him either, but still his rage commands authority and the queen controls him. As dangerous as he could be to rhaenyra, he could be very useful.
All things considered I feel as the actions of Alicent are believable due to her position, they rly show her not going mad, but genuinely struggling to keep a balance of peace rather than pursue her fathers wishes. And its kinda funny how the protection of the family, what viserys wanted, is what alicent guns for in this episode. Her authority in this episode actually kinda gave me hope

This scene is EPIC but i agree it's bad for the story. Rhaenys didn't have to break through the floor to escape and if she did she would have been crushed. She wouldn't have been able to change into armour before mounting Meleys. And if this actually happened, Aemond would have immediately got on Vhagar and chased her all the way to dragonstone. Rhaenys had no reason to mass kill peasants as a way to send a message to the greens. I think the idea of the scene was to set up the smallfolk's animosity towards the blacks and the dragons which will lead up to the riots in kings landing, but it's s8 GOT writing. They are trying to set up future plot points without making the writing logical.
I believe that her dragon, Meleys, was commonly considered to be the fastest dragon living at that time -- so Aemond knew she would have left him far behind. As far as killing innocents, I am betting she would have blamed that on the Greens for essentially imprisoning her and then parking a mass of people in her way, preventing her from leaving with her dragon (but I agree - the method of her escape will probably contribute to the small folk's hatred of dragons.) And it could be argued that perhaps Meleys smashed open the floor with her tail and then emerged through the hole as to avoid smashing her rider. With all the flying dust it remains unclear how they actually smashed through the floor. And finally, conceivably, she might have had time to change into her armor. I assume that their dragon-riding armor is stored down in the pits (since dragon-riders tend to show up in court without their armor). I also think the coronation ceremony could have gone on a bit longer than what actually see on camera and it's just kind of edited down - thus giving her more time to suit up. Perhaps the dragon-keepers even assisted her, as they might not have known what was going on above and wouldn't have questioned a dragon-rider wanting to depart.

Alicent may be manipulative, cunning, ambitious, and greedy for power now but at the end of the day, she does truly love her children very much and tries to protect them all. I think one of the main reasons she even wanted Aegon II on the throne is to just ensure that they are safe from Rhaenrya because she probably still fears she would kill all of them if they initially supported her claim. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣right?
This speaks volumes to Rhaenys’ character. She was dead right about Alicent. Alicent represents the very reason Rhaenys herself could not ascend the iron throne, why her granddaughters will never have claim, and why poor Laena ultimately did not matter at all in the line of succession, despite having done her “duty”. Not even to Rhaenys’ “dear” husband; Corlys passed over Laena and her children just like Rhaenys had been all those years ago.
If Rhaenys sides with the Greens, she is a slave to that tradition, and her granddaughters are too. Just as Alicent is.
As her descendant Daenerys would come to say, “A dragon is no slave”. While Rhaenys had her differences with Rhaenyra, I get the sense she admired her for standing up to tradition. Why shouldn’t a woman sit the iron throne, especially when the King himself believed she would be a good one? ** this is not saying she’s by default a good ruler, it means a good ruler makes a good ruler, not gender or anything else. Rhaenyra at least has shown the most dedication to the role, more than any of Alicent’s children (actually sitting on council meetings, making confrontations when Viserys chose inaction, and actually hiring a capable Kingsguard, not just because they have a fancy title, as Otto would have done).
This should have been showed to us more, but Rhaenyra’s sons - although bastards - were raised and loved by Laenor, are good people, and are dedicated to becoming good rulers. If names are truly all that lives on, in the words of Corlys himself, then gender should not matter in the slightest. I very much appreciate this change from the books.
Edit: I agree that it makes no sense for Rhaenyra NOT to tell Rhaenys about Laenor. She has everything to gain by telling her, plus, it’s a nice bit of closure for her… um, cousin-aunt? I’m lost at this point.
I think it was poor story form to not flesh out Rhaenyra’s ruling capabilities earlier. In the books she’s very clearly NOT a capable leader, but I think they’re trying to tell a different story here. She took charge when her father didn’t many times when she was younger, and actively wanted to be involved in ruling (sometimes to Viserys’ dismay). Even Aemond, while a good fighter, hasn’t sat on council meetings or shown any other dedication to the role other than marrying his sister.
And yeah, I think Rhaenys honestly made Rhaenyra’s job a lot harder by killing civilians. I think a good scene to explain Rhaenys’ rationale here would be her considering fleeing peacefully (the very first scene we see Syrax we can see an exit to the sea separate from where the crowds are) but when she hears the crowds cheer for the new King over the rightful Queen (once again, just like they did all those years ago to her) she loses it. Still a stupid idea on her part, but still more justifiable than Dany’s rage in my opinion.
At the end of the day, Rhaenyra still may be a shit Queen, but it still proves George’s overall point of the series: gender, age, birthright - none of these make a good ruler, being a good ruler does.
Yeah, but let's not say that all of Rhaenyra’s sons are good people.

Rhaenys showed us exactly what she was saying to Corlys. The throne isn’t everything to her anymore. She sees herself as a mother first now. She lost her children and decided that she valued her dragon more than the small folk. She knew if she didn’t join the Greens that Meyles was as good as dead.
She can ask Rhaenyra about his son
Well, about that 😳

Rheanyra literally does this later she kept three green dragons in after she conquered the city because without a rider they are useless
So was she. The greens would have let Baela and Rhaena be the ladies of Driftmark and everything could have been cool. Its clear that no one on the blacks care about keeping the realm nor there own family together
You know, a thought occurred to me. In many ways this mirrors Ned Stark's decision to show mercy to Cercei and her children and in doing so doomed the realm. While perhaps not as cut and dry, in can't be argued that Rhaenys could have effectively wiped out the Green faction right then and there. But she spared them because she was both an honorable woman and I think because she sympathized with Alicent protecting her children. But because of that mercy, the kingdom will now be drawn into a civil war that will decimate it and its greatest dynasty
And she didn’t want to be a kin slayer, after loosing both her children and seeing Vaemond beheaded. Not ideal, but scaring them shitless must have been fun.
