Sometimes, the non-benders are actually better than the element benders, because if you’re an element bender, you mostly fully rely on your bending abilities. So if someone takes away your bending in a fight, you’re pretty much finished.
which is weird because bending's based on martial arts so I'd atleast expect them to know hand to hand combat specially earth and metal benders

As I'm drunk right now, I'm going to be sincere. Sokka is my favourite characther and is the one I most indentify with. He is flawed. He is dumb. He is smart. He is happy. He is sad. He is complete. He is looking for something else. He is happy with what he has.
The only thing I wish we could see from sokka is a kind of "avatar journey" he could go; Learning all martial arts and becoming so skilled that even the most powerfull benders would have a hard time facing him.
Of course, Aang, Zuko's, Wuan, Roku, Kyosh and Korra's stories are more epic, more "heroes journey". But Sokka is more human journey, one with more relatable mistakes , with more real life relationships. He is the Han Ssolo to the avatar gang. But he is even more. He is even more flawed. He is even more smart. He is even more himself.
I believe he did have a little bit of a journey in the original show. Even though it was mainly focused on aang, the other characters had their training and skill development times. The main ones about Sokka are when he trained with Suki and the kyoshi warriors and when he trained with the swordmaster. And of course in the background he would've trained to use his boomerang.
The bending styles themselves are forms of martial arts, so i like to say that he practiced the "martial arts" that didn't have to do with bending.

I’d say Zuko is more of the Han Solo of the group than Sokka(Sokka is more like C3PO to me), but I’m with you on all the other points!
Honestly, this man is one of my favorite characters from the show. not only is this man hilarious, charming, and an all around great guy, but he managed to get so far without any bending skills at all, getting sword training, a becoming a well respected warrior. Legit man, i can't get enough of him.

Sokka’s my favorite character not only for his incredible character development, leadership, bravery and planning, but Sokka is not afraid to admit he is wrong. In the first book, Sokka refuses to believe that a bunch of girls (the Kyoshi warriors) completely kicked his ass and even starts making excuses. But, eventually he goes to them on his knees admitting his shame and begging them for forgiveness, completely humiliating himself. And, by the third book when Sokka goes to master Piandao for training, Sokka humiliates himself by admitting he has nothing to offer and is not an extraordinary swordsman. And by the end of the episode Sokka, who had worked the ENTIRE day to make his space sword, all by himself too, willingly surrenders it and once again accepts humility and shame because he lied to Piandao about being from the fire nation. This to me proves his insaneee character development because he went from being a misogynistic, kinda egotistical character who had a hard time admitting he was wrong, to respecting the women who he was fighting alongside and realizing how strong and powerful they were, and easily accepting humility and growing from it. Now I could go on and on and on about the other fantastic characteristics of Sokka but I honestly think I’d be here for hours 😂 Sokka is just such a fantastic character and my absolute favorite from the entire show!
Woah, I just realized something. In the pilot, sokka was steering his canoe among icebergs when he crashed and had to abandon it as it was crushed. Later, he passed the manhood boating test with bato. It's another sign of him growing up and becoming more mature

I like the legend of Korra. I really do but man I wish Sokka was alive in the show so we could have seen him interact with the new team avatar. Imagine him leading the campaign against Kuvira or Zaheer since he protected Korra from them when she was a child that would have been awesome.

I swear I love Sokka so much and he grew so much I feel proud. He was a bit sexist and sarcastic and childish at the start and then he grew into such a heroic honorable leader. Really great character development. He is one of my faves.

I didn’t get interested in the last air bender until 2008 and when watching it, Sokka was my favor character on the get go. In the sword master episode, Sokka was feeling insecure about not being a bender but I didn’t feel sorry for him. Why? Because he has the thing that is just as important as bending ability: strategic mind. I didn’t feel bad for Sokka about feeling insecure about not being a better because I had confidence in him and I have seen Mei, Ty Lee, and Piandao fight against benders and they are non benders themselves; if they have potential in a fight as non benders, so can Sokka; this and his strategic mind made me have confidence in this water tribe joker. 12 years have passed since the original series ended and Sokka has still been my favorite character in the whole show. I have been insecure about certain skills but I had confidence in other skills I have. You don’t need to be a bender to be a badass. The human mind is the most important weapon of all. What’s the use of bending without the strategic mind to back it up? Azula was an excellent strategist and she’s shown that without her bending. Sokka for the win.
