The big big problem behind this "expansion pack" is that, with it's release, there is no hope for us that Nintendo will improve on the current online service. No messaging friends, or invite them directly to our games in anytime, no voice chat, not even dedicated servers for most of their games. They ignored all our requests and decided to sell us an underwhelming product at $50 instead.

I want to point out about the music issue in Mario Kart 64, that game has a feature that a lot of us completely forgot that it had that is causing that issue. One of the buttons is dedicated to music volume adjustment. Pressing it once will bring the music to 50% volume, pressing it again will turn music off completely, and then pressing it again will turn music back on at full blast. This threw me off too, because I ran into the same issue, but I found out it was because I was pressing that button. Once I was aware, it never happened again. I can tell that's what was happening to you guys too, because there's a little jingle that plays when you press the button to adjust the music, and I'm hearing that jingle every time your music goes in and out. So one of you was pressing that button.

I think nintendo should have an option for those who don't want the live service part of the online subscription and just want to be able to play online with their friends. I think a huge part of the complaints is that you HAVE to pay for the online + games even when you don't want to.

I agree with everything you’ve said, I wish Nintendo had different like “tiers” to their pricing. I don’t really care for sega nor the animal crossing add on as I don’t own the game so having to pay more for something I’m not going to use is a tad off.
If you could just choose to purchase the N64 pack for a certain price then you can add on the DLC or sega for the full price

Agreed. The lack of options is astounding to me. They should just separate it more instead of making it all a vague value. I'd be more inclined to actually consider buying some parts of the expansion pack then, but as it is, it's not worth it for me at all.

Nintendo needs to start taking notes from Playstation and Xbox with their subscription services.
Party Chat, Game chat, Messaging, Achievements/Trophies, Etc. All of these features came standard with the other consoles. If Nintendo wants to start having AAA game releases alongside Playstation and Xbox, they need to step their game up. I honestly believe there are a lot of gamers who would make the Switch their Main Console if at least some of these features could be added to the Online Service.

    • @supermanlegen
      @supermanlegen Před 2 lety +11

Yeah the price was fine for just basic service. But now they charging more than Ps Now for emulator games they lost their mind. Adding stuff we didn't ask for like old Sega games when Sega already has those game in eshop in a collection. Seems like money grab. If you charge full service you should deliver full service.
Luckily it's optional but still leaves bad taste because they seemed to dramatically up the price over original but giving old games. The price just doesn't seem fair as it an ad on to the original service but it's over 2x more . They should really ads more benefits. It might get there but seems smarter to minimum let library grow, but hopefully get more benefits too. Also it's so old school because you only can play with real friends not random people that can become friends.

Hate to be that guy and say this: but as long as the loyalists who keep saying "NiNtEnDo cAn'T dO No WrOnG!" keep paying for this stuff Nintendo will never listen to criticism. This is a company that has cultivated a huge fanbase that conists of some who believe the company is 100% right with all their decisions. Why do you think that in the five years of the Switch's existence they have done almost next to nothing with improving their online? Online connections are still terrible for games like Smash Bros Ultimate, Super Mario Maker 2, and even Splatoon 2? Why is it that we have to rely on third party chat apps to communicate with our friends when Nintendo has the resources to make it so easy implement? It's cause Nintendo knows that those in the fanbase who are loyalists will give them money even when offering the bare minimum.

    • @ACheapLemon

@@e1iteyoshi998 I feel like the people who genuinely defend Nintendo doing things like this are definitely in the minority, the like ratio of the price announcement video on YT is absurdly low. The reason Nintendo gets away with it is simply because of the first party games and casual market.
The average Joe outside of the comparatively smaller online community isn't gonna be paying attention to what fan games Nintendo DMCAs, or what tournaments they shut down, or the poor lifespan of the analog sticks, or what online features are just blatantly missing/barely working, they only want to go buy the Mario Kart game for the Nintendo that they played at their friend's house or at a family event once. And if they can pay 20 bucks a year to play *with* that friend/family online, that's pretty cheap compared to the price of the console so yeah why not. Doesn't matter if half of what you'd consider standard for an online service is missing, it works and is comparatively cheaper so yeah most people who haven't already got an expectation for what the quality of one of these services is supposed to be like is just gonna buy into it and not think anything about it
It's the same reason FIFA games sell like hotcakes every year. It doesn't matter if it's predatory or lazily made, it technically works and there's no alternatives so people are just gonna buy it

If we are considering future DLC as part of the expansion pack, we have to consider how often nintendo actually makes paid DLC. . . which is not alot. . . like twice a year if we don't count smash bros, and even then, it's usually for offline games.
So in that regard, if you are a single-player user who doesn't buy the base online, that would be $50 for 2 DLC that would have normally averaged out combined at $45 dollars since their paid DLC is usually $19.99. Meaning you are getting ripped off if you are buying it for that year's DLC.
    *MY FEAR:*
is that to justify the LACK of DLC per year is they might start making what would have been free DLC now cost money. An example. Lets say we get 1 new mario golf map every 2 months. Now, all of a sudden, we don't get any new maps for 5 months. On the 6th month, they make an announcement where they are selling a pack of 3 maps for $5 to $10. Now we are in a reality where the content we would have gotten for free are now costing us money simply because nintendo wants to make the expansion pack artificially look more valuable. "Artificial Value" being something nintendo is VERY good at manipulating.
    Just something to think about.

The pandemic and inflation is also squeezing us. The pricing was very insensitive and a slap in the face quite frankly.
Something that always puts me off is Nintendo’s smugness in regards to their perceived value of their retro games. Your old games are really only worth what people are willing to pay, you can’t force the value up on your 20-30 year old games.

16:14 THIS... this right now. Having this weird makeshift "Game Pass" and all these nostalgic games mean nothing if the online is just as mediocre as it was back on the WII... and it used to be free so back then, we put up with that.
But when we knew it was gonna be paid back in 2017, we had hope for improvement to the online as a whole. And all Nintendo seems to care about is MILKING the nostalgia with these retro titles on NES, SNES, N64, & GENESIS while not addressing the issues being brought up so often about the online.
The selling point of playing N64 games with friends means nothing to me when the service is just mediocre and overpriced for what's being offered. If we're not having fun with it, why even bother?

Unpopular opinion: I think it would be great to separate the online subscription from the getting old games sub. I just want to play these games. Not necessarily with anyone because all of the people who I used to play these games with in the 90s don't freaking have a Switch. So I'd be perfectly content paying less for no online and games only. 🙃

"a company that has literally made my childhood and still continues to give me enjoyment to this day doesn't care"
I always find it problematic to give companies personality traits like that. A company is not one person. It's a name for a group of people working together for a specific period of time before some of them leave the company and get replaced by new people and so on. Nintendo is just a brand name like every other brand name and most of the people, who were there at the beginning, aren't even there anymore. It's also a company and just like every other company... they wanna make the money. The only reason why Nintendo seemed genuine at the beginning is because gaming wasn't as huge back then as it is nowadays. Once a medium reaches a certain size it gets corrupted. The movie and music industry were predecessors to this sad direction swift and the gaming industry is following those foot steps. We should stop defending companies (because let's be real... they are all bad) and should judge products individually instead (no matter which company is behind it).

My main thing, is I’m in charge of the family membership with my two siblings, and we all play Animal Crossing. So it would cost me a min of 50 for 2DLCs if I do some weird player/home-device shenanigans (which might annoy them to set up). Or 75 for all of them bought individually. And then on top of that, with the subscriptions we get extra things like ocarina, and potentially new DLCs like Pokemon, which would be worth it for me in particular.
But then there’s that nagging thought that if we ever stop, we just can’t play Animal Crossing? If you stop, how much would it affect the gameplay? Would it wreck any of the game files to stop and start again later?
It’s confusing and annoying. Cause it makes sense now, but I’m just worried about later. Especially as Animal Crossing is a game that never really dies. One of my siblings still logs in to their new leaf DS game now and again. It’s perplexing, and I just wish they made it a little bit cheaper, cause it’s hard to justify the giant annual price. We’ll see I suppose. 🤔

I'm a die-hard, long time Nintendo fan, and the N64 is the console I credit with getting me into gaming (Ocarina of Time and the 64 version of Resident Evil 2 were the first games that I fell in love with, having mostly played NES, SNES, and Sega games with my family before that). That said, Nintendo is really snoozing on the potential of the Switch, and this online service highlights that. How hard would it be to release Joy-Cons that have a special N64 style layout to make playing those old games that much easier (though I'd rant all day about the failures of the Joy-Cons, and all the missed opportunities that Nintendo could have had with those)? With fan driven emulation being both free and practically flawless, albeit questionably legal at best and blatantly illegal at worst, why is the company that made the games having trouble emulating them? As much as I love Nintendo, I feel like they've grown comfortable and complacent with their position in the console wars and the security of their fanbase. Since Nintendo thrives on exclusives that we all grew up with, like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, etc, and offers a relatively different style of game play from PlayStation or Xbox, they don't feel like they need to do anything special to compete or apply any additional effort to fix their own mistakes. A good example of this is that I would have probably bought a Switch Lite, and would have considered a Switch OLED, but since I know they're still using the same old Joy-Cons with the same old drift, I can't justify it (I use the Hori Split Pad Pro, and while it's starting to have issues after more than a few years of use, they're minor and often easily resolved). Nintendo needs to step it up, and quit settling for sub-par equipment and half-assed releases. I for one won't be touching this new online service, and honestly encourage others not to until Nintendo gets their act together.

Many other companies have released remastered versions of older games that look and play well, this really does feel like a half-assed attempt to have us fork over more money. At the bare minimum, (and assuming this DLC thing is going to continue with other games using expansion pack) Nintendo should’ve given a download code for the DLC. You should own it, not just “rent” it. It’s not like you can pay for one month and then cancel, effectively getting something for free. You can only get the 12 month plan.

It maybe worth it then but I’m probably not going to be able to make the money for the expansion pass soon.

Already got it. It's working fine for me on Mario Kart & Yoshi. The price difference is worth it for Ocarina of Time alone as I never had an N64 and want to catch up on all the Zelda games now. Just waiting for my N64 controller before I play that one.

    Some questions:
This version of Zelda on Nintendo Switch online is the 64 version only? As in, no remaster or improvements form the 3Ds?
    Is Majoras Mask available?
Do you think this damages our chances of getting a stand alone switch version of Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask like we did with Skyward Sword?
And lastly, I hav a 64 with both titles, but Id be keen on improving my experience, worth buying a 3DS and the 3D vesions of both games? Can I connect that to my TV, and use an additional controller?
    Cheers bruv!

One thing to remember, which a lot of us who grew up with Nintendo (I'm an 80's baby so I had everything from the OG NES to now the Switch) tend to forget is that they have then and still are now the console for kids. It's the main reason why they can't give those of us who have stayed loyal to their systems something that may seem arbitrary (bc XBOX and PS have it) like texting and voice chat in-game.
To provide those kinds of services would, unfortunately, put the majority of their fanbase (kids) in harms way of adults who also use their console. And as much as we'd like to believe we (as in the 80's kids who are now full grown adults) are the largest fanbase for Nintendo, they are still in many ways the "family friendly" console that parents have felt more safe in giving their kids.
Nintendo, I am sure, sees themselves as the console families can trust. Just look all the commercials they release.
If you want texting or voice chatting, the place to go for that is XBOX or PS. True, Nintendo can put "parental controls" on their console to prevent anything bad coming through should they allow these features, but parents would then have to think twice about buying their kid a Nintendo device at that point.
It's the same with the Pokemon game. Those who hate it (adults) and those who probably don't but we don't hear from them (kids) is purely based on the franchise game not aging with us. Me, personally, I'm nostalgic for the way the game was and so I love the new Pokemon. But we see how things are on XBOX and PS and we say "hey, why can't Nintendo be more hardcore like this?" it's not because they can't. They simply won't. And that decision is what makes them STILL a contender and in many cases the top selling console against XBOX and PS.
PS: I did pay the extra $30 though I likely won't use the extras. I just like supporting Nintendo and what they are doing to keep that girl born in the early 80's able to reminisce in the good ole days...

      @Jam-lk5js Před 2 lety +2

I never thought about it like that and you do have a good point. Now that I think about it, Nintendo really is a family console and I would prefer to give my kid that instead of a ps4 or Xbox. I personally don't mind the no voice chat even tho it would be cool. It would nice if they do figure something out for the older fan base but it's fine if they can't I suppose.

Bad argument. You can easily make it as it is right now the default option in every situation, but give advanced/adult users the ability to have the additional features which would make it a better online experience. This way you win with everyone. It's just Nintendo wanting to do as little as possible for as much money as they can make seem like a better value than it actually is.

The difference is pokemon Pearl was £24 pound which was a longer harder game with free post game and you could buy diamond for the same price but sword and shield was £40-50 and so if you wanted both for the version exclusive pokemon there almost £100 then the dlc was £17 and if you wanted it for both versions of the game you had to pay for it twice £40 , then if you only had one switch you had to pay a subscription fee of £15 for pokemon home to move pokemon and if you wanted to play online/competitively it’s £20 for online , it’s just milking pokemon fans for any money they have and making competitive pokemon basically pay to win as a lot of the competitive pokemon are behind a pay wall

The music cutting out on Mario Kart 64 actually happens when playing it on the actual Nintendo 64 console.
I and family used to play N64 up until my second year of Highschool back around 2012 and the music cutting out happens all the time. It’s nothing new to me. So it’s not really that unusual, the emulation isn’t actually bad it’s just how they set up the music in the game

  • @jonathancurry3270
    @jonathancurry3270 Před 2 lety +2

8:56 so I'm seeing this alot where "the audio cuts out of mario kart" when it doesn't. If it did then it would affect the other games as well which it doesnt. Everyone says its specific to mario kart. The emulator is fine when it comes to audio. This "gltich" isnt a glitch at all and is an actually feature. In mario kart specifically, pressing the L button removes the music from races. No one knows that becuase on an actual N64 you're almost never pressing L where as L is right next the ZL so you're bound to hit L and remove the audio time to time. I agree that the emulator isnt perfect but this isn't the emulators fault.

I also played it online with a friend in Texas (and I'm in Oregon), and it ran pretty damn well until near the end when their internet started acting up. We still got an hour+ in before it messed up, though~

My thoughts are, they priced it as high as they thought it was worth with a bigger library. They didn't have enough games working, but needed the revenue stream, so they announced it with the Animal Crossing DLC to sweeten the pot for the first year as they build the collection. It's much harder to price something lower upfront and then increase the price to what they think its worth once more games are in the collection.

Fair points, maybe "need" is a strong word. But a business is trying to make a profit. Nintendo as a whole might be flush with cash but individual divisions or teams in an organization usually have to prove they are worth the investments into their projects. At least where I've worked, management will cancel a project that takes too long, in order to redirect the budgeted money to other more lucrative projects. So we would get the product live and to the users with the basics and add to it over time once the revenue started coming in. Nintendo's expansion pass just rung a familiar tone for me, that's all.

even then if they wanted to use renting dlc as a boost to the values service for the inititial stage why just limit it to animal crossing one game that not every would be interested in. splatoon 2, btow and smash would make for a good viriety of dlc to rent. NSO expansion pack really feel likes it does nothing well enough to warrent buying it at all, too small of a game liabry and not enough dlc to rent

The standalone DLC for ACNH is worth it at $25.99 as a one time purchase. With the Expansion pack for Nintendo Online, you will lose access to the DLC gameplay if you don't resub the next month, but some content will stay in your base game as it's part of the 2.0 update. I was really excited to play N64 games but hopefully the library grows in the future. It's very small right now and I would love to play other classic N64 games for such a price tag. I assume they will only port Nintendo games though, and not stuff like Golden Eye or Diddy Kong Racing. I honestly just want to play Mario64, Zelda, and Banjo Kazooie 😅
