Painting & Detailing RC Lexan Body - Tamiya Aqroshot DT03 Bodywork Non Box-Art Tips

- In this video I complete the body for the DT-03 Tamiya Aqroshot RC buggy / short course truck. You will see that I didn't stick to the Tamiya box-art instructions! Along the way I hope to throw in a few tips and tricks for painting and detailing a RC Lexan / polycarbonate body.
Many thanks my mate Rob @robbrennanrc who got this kit for me as a Birthday gift.
About the DT-03 T kit:
This assembly kit R/C truck features a stylish body inspired by U.S. stadium racing trucks. Made from lightweight and durable polycarbonate, it features a rear wing, and can be decorated using the flashy markings included in the kit. The chassis provides suitably dynamic driving fun, and is mounted with front and rear wheels of differing offset, mounted with radial semi-pneumatic tires.
The stylish slimline form of this chassis stems from its lightweight yet durable monocoque frame, which features a longitudinally-positioned battery and the R/C equipment along the centerline for excellent balance. The combination of a long 287mm wheelbase and 4-wheel double wishbone suspension married to CVA oil dampers with long arms at a 25-degree attachment angle, allows the model to handle with stability on poor surfaces. The rear-positioned gearbox is sealed to protect from dust and dirt, with the built-in differential gear offering smooth cornering.

Gosh Mark, that turned out delightful.... especially bearing in mind the time of year, don't think I would be brave enough to spray in December!
Those lines were so crisp, and the two tone blue worked a treat..... so much better than box art.

This one was particularly handy as I am planning on doing a two tone vw camper in the new year..... no doubt I will be watching this again closer to the time!
Had a very strange dream last night that I bumped into you at a squirrel convention..... There was loads of marquees in a big field in the countryside in the middle of the summer!
You had lost Rob so I said I would help you look for him and we started looking in all the show tents!
We ended up in a scalextric marquee where we built a huge track, except the sections of scalextric track were not black,they were covered in grey fur!!???
We then raced some 1970s F1 scalextric cars on the track before continuing to look for Rob.
After that we ended up in a religious marquee where they were trying to get us to join the faith, we sneaked out under the side of the tent and ran off with them chasing us!
We finally found Rob in between two barns at the bottom of the field..... he was hanging from the guttering with a Tamiya plug going into one ear, and a balance lead into the other, which was all connected up to the barn roof!!!
"Ello" he said, you yelled up to him "What you doing Rob?".....
He replied "I'm charging myself up"!!!
We then all got a hot dog from the burger stand and jumped in the back of a racing green colour full size Tamiya lunchbox that was driven by Sooty and Sweep......?????!!!!!
That's when my alarm went off and I was rudely awoken!!
I put the alarm on snooze and fell back asleep in an attempt to pick the dream back up but it didn't work.
Shame, because Sooty and Sweep were meant to be taking us somewhere really exciting, but I can't remember where!
Guess this is what happens when you fall asleep watching you tube videos!! 😂 😅 🤣
I do get some really strange dreams, and often have the ability to actually be conscious and fully aware of what's going on even though I'm sleeping, I can also control where they are going sometimes......
But this one was most bizarre!

Now that is a very strange and amusing dream, mate! TBH I am very similar, have these "realistic" dreams that then turn very strange, and I can also sort of "keep them going" whilst in a semi-unconscious state! We are dream brothers!

Great desing and very value painting tips Mark. Removing the protection foil's always the highlight. The blue fits very well to the contrast of the stickers.

That's one great color combo man... I agree, sometimes, box art just don't cut it, other times, box art is the only way to go. It does look good mate!!!!

It turned out really well Mark! I was a little concerned at first when you showed the colors but once you had them sprayed on there I quite like it! It does go well with the kit stickers also! That is one thing I struggle with at times is coming up with unique color options for paint jobs... or more accurately committing to using unique colors for custom paint jobs! I waffle on and on in my head and eventual just grab something at the last minute and hope for the best LOL!

Yeah, definitely get it out on the dirt, give it a blast, Mark! The old Aqro is such a cool truck-buggy kind of thing... You really did a good job on the paint scheme, very nice with the lines aligned to the stickers. And of course as always very well explained in the video! I'm happy you left out the chrome bits, or else we couldn't see that nice blue colour. Nice one, mate!

Hey Mark, dude your skills in doing these lexan shells never ceases to amaze me. Not only is it a very neat job, but that colour scheme is brilliant - the two-tone blue contrasted by the red is spot on. When you then put the shell on the chassis it just got better and reminded me of some high end Traxxas Rustler, but with all the charm of a Tamiya. But yeah, this colour scheme came to life by going through the full and half empty tins I had in the cupboard and trying them against the decal set. That came out looking fantastic, Mark! I really like the light/dark blue contrast. In fact, I painted a square-body Chevy pickup truck shell the exact same way a few years back. I still have it in storage somewhere... Lol. Great video as always, my friend. 👊

Hiya Mark. Oh yeah love the non box art paint scheme. You got nice clean lines between the colours and did a top job all round as we've come to expect from the body shell master! It's a great shame that they didn't put Blitzer tyres in the Aqroshot kit as standard because with those it's an excellent RC. My one with the brushless set absolutely flies across the golf course! A massive thanks Pete and wishing you a Happy New Year! Yeah, box art needs a miss now and then... the clean lines are from using Tamiya masking tape, always works well for me and is the best you can get IMHO. Agreed, those Blitzer tyres should come in the box, what were Tamiya thinking?!?!?! I'm hoping mine will be a blast with the 12T motor in it, even if it goes half as fast as yours it should be fun! Don't hold your breath for the weather matey, we got a lot more rain coming! All the best my good friend! 🍺😎👍

The music you chose is the same that the HPi Guys use when he is constructing his 1/24th scale model kits. Very soothing watching that channel as it takes me back 40+ yrs when building mine (showing my age now!!)

With arches I use a drum sander on a multitool but you have to go gently. But arches are the worse part to cut. Masking you make look easy and I know it's not 🙂 I always find there are parts on these body so hard to get paint it into places. I have to say the 2 blues work well on it, funny how some cars need box art where others need a colour change like the Squash Van.
Great point and a good use of a Dremel tool Mal! Agreed, arches are always a pain! I use the thin Tamiya masking tape, it's the best there is. The bed of this truck has some hard to get to bits my friend. Always good to deviate from box art when it suits the body, mate! 😎👍

I am particularly impressed with the two Tamiya blue colours, I was paying special attention to the light blue. you got the smoked windows just right 😊 definitely the right choice of colours. Many thanks John! Yes that light blue is a very nice colour and would look good on all types of RC bodies. I was lucky with the weather that day and the spraying went well, but I did use a hairdryer to help the paint dry. You know how careful you need to be with the smoke paint my friend! I was well happy with mine until l seen this Mark! Excellent job looks very flash! Class job as always! I wonder if tamiya released this with the BB wheels/tyres like we have on ours Mark just how popular this kit could of been because its a classic modern chassis in the DT-03 as we all know and the body is pretty damn cool! Those on road tyres it comes with just look odd and are pretty pants off road too!
I took the foil off under the doors too mate as lt just didn't do it for me plus it didn't stick that well.

Hiya mark, big fan of your videos :) over Christmas I got two Tamiya kits a blitzer beetle and a tt02 Monte Carlo Subaru 99, have built both of them but I’m waiting on painting my Subaru body, it’s rather cold and rainy here in Bristol, I’m not sure what to do, I really don’t want to wait until summer to paint my body but is it really that bad painting outside in the cold if I bring it indoors to dry between each coat? Yeah it's been rain and more rain in the midlands as well. No escape from it this time of year!
I did paint this Aqroshot last week in-between showers but at least it's dry in the greenhouse.
As long as you get a dry spell i think you will be OK spraying outside, just make sure it's not windy or most of the paint will fly away! Drying inside is essential though. Best of luck - cheers! 🍺😎👍
@@MarkBryanRC just finished painting my Subaru body, I’m absolutely thrilled with the result, I didn’t back it with anything and it looks absolutely beautiful, do you reckon I can back it when the paint is fully cured or is it better to do it when the paint is fresh ? I’m so happy with the result though :)
@@CoreyCTX Great news! Glad it looks beautiful! I usually back mine when the paint is still fresh (but at least dried for 2 hours) but if you leave it a day or 2 it will still be fine! Enjoy!
