Painting the Sand Scorcher

  • This is "short" video of the painting process of the Tamiya Sand Scorcher. I've been in the hobby for more than 30 years and I must say that this body is one of the most difficult to paint, if you want to replicate original art. The painting process might takes several weeks due all details and drying time required. I have added some custom extras like lights and inner fenders. I have used Tamiya original paints. Patience plays a huge role in the process.
Feel free to ask any question... 😉

What I've always liked about this particular model is how it stays true to the full scale Beetle design

Beautiful job - I received one of these when they first came out in 1979 - still have it. I want to build a new body for it. Two questions, what is the polisher you used and how did you mask the trim around the windshield and side windows?

It's a shame, that Tamiya does not include fender inserts, cockpit and proper light housings, a closed chassis and such in this and similar re-re-re-re-releases.
There is so much potential left unused by them.

Hey buddy thank you for the reply. I'll keep my eyes on Ebay. So far on Ebay I get alot of 1.7s and I need 1.5s and nobody so far can get me what I need in a 1.5. I have the same wheels as the buggy in your video and I ordered them in a 1.5 size. Like I said i'll just keep looking on Ebay. Thank you buddy.

Great looking scorcher! If I was to pick on anything, the recessed lines on the bonnet should also be white. I am currently painting my own sand scorcher too, and its really challenging, some of the masking and paint is doing my head in. Been doing bodywork for a week now, and only now I am starting to mask off to prepare for some blue..........

Can anyone please tell me where I can buy the tires that are on this buggy. Nobody has a full set or they don't have them anymore. Can anyone help and point me to a dealer who might have them? I find alot of them for the tamiya brat but nothing for the scorcher. Thank you.

Hi, you can still find them in ebay. These belong to the Tamiya Fast Attack buggy. Keep in mind that the rims are different too. The rims are 1.5 whereas the frog, hornet, grasshopper are 1.3 if I recall correctly.
