You nailed the dilemma perfectly when comparing a Toyota to a Jeep. I had a 2004 Toyota Matrix for 16 years and traded it in for a used 2016 Jeep Renegade with a manual trans and a MySky roof. Why? Because I wanted something a more "fun", to be perfectly honest. That was two years ago. Do I regret my decision? No. I knew going in that the Jeep was probably going to cost me a few bucks in "remediation", and it did. The Matrix cost me exactly nothing except for routine maintenance, but after 16 years I was bored and wanted to have some "fun".
The Renegade's alternator crapped out, cost me $850 to replace and it had a bit of an A/C issue which cost me another $850. All of us with finite "budgets" face these dilemmas in our lives, do we play it safe or "roll the dice" a little bit? I chose to roll the dice, and again, after two years I don't regret my decision. You just have to be realistic about what the type of product you are buying, and a "Jeep" is not a "Toyota". You have to factor in some extra cost and aggravation of ownership. Is it worth it? If you absolutely have to have Toyota reliability in your life, this Jeep probably won't cut the mustard. However, if you can handle a bit of "inconvenience", maybe you have a spare car or a very short commute where you could Uber it in if need be, then if this car is an itch you need to scratch, go for it.

I ordered one, just a standard sport for a few reasons...
The personality, ofcourse! I just loved this model from the start, even recommended a friend to go for it, when he was heaving troubles with a 2y old c4 citroen almost going out of waranty..he never regretted it !
Then , the price...i would seriously disagree when saying this is an expensive car, atleast when standard. Buying a similarly equipped Fiesta would get pretty close on price and is hardly noticable on the road, has hardly any character and is just an little commuter. No fun there thus..
Third, the funfactor of this little 'jeep', it just looks fun, it's fun to drive , and love the aftermarket support on the jeep-brand.
Last: always wanted a jeep wrangler, but living in the city..well..let's just say Jeep hits the nail on the head on this one for me personaly :)

A/C, radiator fan, power seat, wind shield washer hose came loose & minor but remaining is the automatic rear wiper does not turn off in rain sensing mode, if a major problem occurs out it goes! Went up Mauna kea in 4x4 mode & trans over heated! Toyota's hold their value because its reliable!

I have the sport model fwd 2.4l w/ 9 speed. No reliability issues. Pretty great. I'm doing up to 32mpg avg. I do have to say, the 9 speed trans could do better. My only complaint.

Joel Diaz Yeah it being a front wheel drive model will definitely help with fuel efficiency! I'd agree with you on the 9 speed automatic. Newer models have a more refined version but the earlier version wasn't all that great.

I hate to burst some bubbles here, but give it time. I have a 2015 renegade and the thing has been in the shop around 11 times since 9k and now I have 27k on it. Some of these were unbelievablel crazy issues for a 4x4 of this kind. 5 times it has been in the shop within the last 3 months alone. BTW if you want to take this one off road ...............DON'T. It is very delicate. I took it off road one time this past summer and it was not a particularly rough trail but I would say it was a moderately rough trail. Well what happened was , after that ride I needed a new wheel bearing, new strut and new strut bearing. These vehicles are made by FIAT remember that. I should have known better. I blame myself. I also have a 2007 Toyota FJ cruiser with 123k on it and it has not had 1/10th the problems that I have had with this one in 2 years. In fact the only problem I had with the FJ is that the steering pump seized on me, but that can and WILL happen on any vehicle.

Arxaggelos Mixail Sorry to hear you're having so many issues with your Renegade. That's why I'm still a bit weary of FCA products, they aren't very consistent with reliability yet. Your story is a perfect example of how the Japanese are still somewhat able to corner the market on reliability, their cars are freakin bombproof!
