9" Ford - The Complete Rear End: What spline count do I need for my axles?

In this episode, we discuss spline count. There are many variables including driving style, drag racing, street use, autocross, vehicle weight, tire size, how it hooks, wheel shake, trans brake, foot brake, 60 foot times, suspension setup, and more.
On a high dollar show car with a street tire, you may get by with a smaller spline count. Ultimately, a car like this will blow the tires off in a non prepped street tire scenario. However, a lesser power drag car on a prepped surface with a drag radial may shock the axle and require a larger spline count. There are so many variables when picking the spline count and carrier.
The 9" Ford has options for 28 and 31 spline axles. 33 spline axles are almost always a spool. The 33 spline posi unit is very rare. 35 Spline axles are available in a posi or spool. 40 Spline axles will be spool only. The larger the spline count, the stronger the axle shaft.
When counting splines, always count the top of the spline and not the valley.
