  • In this video, we discuss the street gear compared to the pro gear. Street gears are made out of an 8620 material and come with a harder heat treat for daily driving and long term durability. Pro gears have a bigger pinion and a softer heat treat for the hard launch in a big power race-car. Pro gears are made out of 9310, a softer material. This means the pro gears are a wear item and need replaced more frequently.
Harder heat treat and durability means the material is more brittle. Softer heat treat means there is some flexibility in the material and less prone to shattering. These both come with their own pros and cons.
What is the fix when you are in the street car vs race car dilemma? Several drag and drive event cars are using two center sections. One with a street gear to drive the distance and a second to make their passes at the track.
There are many variables in choosing a gear including driving style, tire type, suspension setup, surface prep. One high horse power car on a street tire, non-prepped surface, and foot braking will get by with making more power. A lesser power car on a prepped surface, wheel hopping on drag radials will not take the same abuse. These are all things to consider when debating between a street gear and a pro gear.

Someone needs to do a video or videos about using a 9-1/2" gear set in a 9" housing. They last 3x longer than 9" gears and only require a different spool.
