  • This is what it is like being a pilot flying private clients all over Western North America in a Cessna 425 Conquest Turboprop! Over the last 16 years as a pilot, I have been enlightened to some of the bigger reasons as to why aviation is an ever growing passion! It's not the destination that matters... but rather the journey and the experience you stand to gain from the challenges put forth by mother nature, physics, mechanics, and our desire to always be learning more. On this short flight, we zig zagged around storms, battled moderate icing conditions, and flew the gantlet through the rocky mountains to make a safe landing at Penticton Airport (CYYF) near Kelowna. With a few days at my disposal, I was able to do some fishing in the Okanagan Valley, and meet some incredible new friends... one of which was my copilot (6 years old!!!) All of this in a few days of "work" reminded me of the following bigger picture lessons as a pilot:
    1. The unforeseen challenges of flying in the Rocky Mountains are truly humbling. A constant reminder that every flight has more to learn than we can possibly soak in at once, and a simple rain cloud demands more respect than we often give.
    2. Every flight offers a unique opportunity to turn a simple trip into a glorious adventure that a lot of us pilots simply take for granted.
    3. Lastly, the importance of taking the time to share your passion with someone who is eager to learn and carry forth the knowledge and experience and stories....that have accumulated from

    Hi Evan, really great video! I love aviation channels, I've never seen yours but wad glad it popped up in my feed and I like how you explain things as you go along, I only fly in flight Sims, and really like using the GTN 750! Love the fishing (off gravel roads 😆) videos were VERY well done! So new subscriber here looking forward to more from you. One thing about flying that is scary is the ice as you mentioned!! Especially seeing that the deicing boots didn't do the trick that last time!!! Glad all went well and what a beautiful plane to be flying!!! Stay safe and congrats man you're living the dream!
    PS: Than landing was so smooth I doubt your passengers could even tell you were on the ground!

      Thanks a lot don! I really appreciate it and glad you liked it! Small little CZcams channel here but trying to get more videos done! I started flying because of the early flight sim 2000 back when I was 14. One thing led to another… haha but flight sim is probably one of my most recommended tools for practicing when not in the sky, even from home!

    I’m trying to narrow down plane selection to fly from the prairies to Penticton instead of driving. I have been told to steer clear of a single engine piston for that. What are your thoughts? I definitely need a good useful load and likely a turbo to help with DA issues. Do you think a twin fits the bill better than a single?

    • @EvanLuft
      @EvanLuft  Před 2 lety +2

      Hey! sorry for the late reply! Where are you based?? I dare not enter into the debate between twin and single engine aircraft as that can get very feisty depending which side of the fence you lay on haha... however I'll give you my honest opinion! :)
      When flying over the mountains (as you will be doing), especially in Canada where there is ice, storms, and changing weather every 5 minutes... you want reliability and/or redundancy. I personally like the twin idea because having two stoves in the event one goes silent, could save your life if you are somewhere over the rockies and IFR (that is ONLY if you are competent on twins... otherwise twins can be deadlier!). Turbine/turboprop is great for the colder weather and the reliability. If you can afford a single engine turboprop, then there are a few great options but they are costly. TBM, Pilatus, Piper Meridian are more expensive single turboprops but are great airplanes for this... also they're pressurized. If you want to goo less expensive, the Piper converted Jetprop might be an idea (piper malibu converted to a turboprop).
      As far as twins go, you want something that has good sinbgle engine climb performance. I am biased to the turboprops because that is what I fly. The airplane I fly can be purchased for bargain prices as far as twin turboprops go, but operating costs are around 1,800 to 2k/hr all in. If you can afford the twin turboprop there are some options but I am most familiar with the ones I have experience flying such as the Conquest. I feel very safe in the Conquest... 2 turbines, great redundant avionics that are modern and up to date, full de ice, great climb performance, pressurized, etc etc etc.
      For a piston twin, you cant beat a good piper seneca. II, III, IV, or the latest V model of senecas are great airplanes and are still popular today. they have great payload capabilities (load up with 4 pax and some light bags and a decent amount of fuel) and there are an abundance of parts as they are still well supported airplanes. Get competent on flyng a seneca like some of the owners I know and you WILL love this airplane hands down. I feel comfy sitting in the back of a seneca in IFR icing conditions if the right pilot is at the helm!
      I hope this helps. If you want to ask more just shoot me a message on my other social media!

    • @SusheePerumal
      @SusheePerumal Před 2 lety

      I purchased a 340A for those reasons - as a 1000 hour single engine pilot with lots of IFR I felt comfortable moving up. Insurance wouldn’t have let me get into a Conquest - but with sufficient hours on the 340A I will be able to move up. I’ve also made some videos on my adventures inspired by Evan!

    Not sure why I just now saw this, but thanks for taking care of your "sponge" Evan! I wish you were my uncle when I was such a sponge. Kudos I don't think I would ever land with full flaps in a plane with split flaps like these 425 or 421 or 414's. There are a few out there with Robertson STOL kits using Fowler flaps similar to the 441. But the L/D picture is not good for a go around transition with split flaps. not that you would ever miss a flight but; czcams.com/video/cx6nhHu84zc/video.html rental car humour.

    Remember the pilot who had his 7 yr. old daughter in the SAME Situation? As pilots we are WELL a where of the mental (& physical) work involved in responsible flying. To down play any of these aspects can lead to VERY VERY unwanted circumstances.

    • @EvanLuft
      @EvanLuft  Před 2 lety +1

      I agree. Obviously he would not be flying the airplane. But technically it is a passenger seat and when the airplane requires all seats be used, I prefer to put a smaller person in the front to make it safer and for weight and balance

    • @EvanLuft
      @EvanLuft  Před 2 lety

      Starting out yes. BUT I always tell everyone this. There are SOOOO many systems on an airplane that are confusing but the basics will keep you alive no matter what. Airspeed, power, attitude, and as long as you don’t forget the landing gear, the plane will still always fly safely.

    • @EvanLuft
      @EvanLuft  Před 2 lety +1

      I have a commercial license :) thanks! It is a unique type of flying because you are basically a “freelance” pilot. Meaning I get paid on a per job basis and you stipulate when and how often you want to work. You build a relationship with the owners and it is a great opportunity to not only fly cool trips, but also meet some really great people. Slightly different from airline flying! :) do you have your license?
