LANDING GEAR FAILURE! | Cessna Turboprop | Full IFR Flight | Pilot Vlog #5

- Our early morning departure in the Cessna Conquest was going exactly as planned until... well... until we actually departed! Right after takeoff, we encountered a mechanical problem with the landing gear when one wheel just wouldn't retract. Although not an emergency, at the time, it emphasized the importance of always "AVIATE, NAVIGATE, COMMUNICATE" as the order of priorities. Issues at low altitude or at critical parts of a flight can turn deadly if you become distracted due to a relatively minor issue. There is absolutely no issue no matter how severe, that you can't make worse, by forgetting to fly the airplane first, get to a safe altitude, and deal with the problem when you have the ability to do so. Hope you enjoy!

Cool. Pumping out flying vids... keep them coming, it is great to see someone in Canada doing flying vlogs.
Haha thanks so much! Im a small time vlogger flying small planes but someones gotta do it now since Buffalo Air isn't anymore :p haha
@@EvanLuft yeah, I’ve seen all your vids... I’m based in YVR. It’s good content. Small airplanes are more interesting. Those turboprop Cessna are pretty sweet machines. Keep on keepin on
Former airline pilot here. You handled the gear issue professionally. Well done. Happy landings!
Coming from you that means a lot! :) thanks! :) happy landings to you too sir!
Well the plane told him his exact problem, Landing gear red, then goes right green. Obviously it fell back down and didnt clip in, otherwise there wouldnt be a green light lol
Good job but i expect this from you , especially in that plane
Outstanding troubleshooting. You did a great job explaining the cause, and the owner must be beyond grateful. I would be. Loving all your vids.
Thanks so much! :) I learn more every time something goes wrong with these older airplanes! :) cheers!
Great video, the 425 has a pretty solid undercarriage. Micro switches do play up from time to time. Good catch.
Thanks a lot! Yeah I learned more from this little incident than what anyone had ever taught me about the gear system! So I’m hind sight, good learning experience!
First time for me seeing a vlog from Canada not quite right Plane Savers was the first one. Looking forward for more.
haha thanks a lot! Also the channel AgentJayZ, the fellow that does turbine conversions and builds is from Canada as well. He's got a big channel. Lots of fascinating stuff!
Thanks Evan
Thanks!
Great video and explanation, keep it up m
Thanks a lot!!
This is a fantastic recap of a shite-ton of troubleshooting haha!
Yes it was. You and I always end up in the situations where we have to use our brains haha
Issues like this make me stop laughing about people who can't retract their gear for a moment. But then I cycle everything and it works and I continue laughing :)
Sometimes it is a pain on the underside but when it is up you can go so fast and when it goes down you have the best brake you can get in an airplane. I love it. Oh yeah except for when the actuator is leaking ALTHOUGH it has new o rings. I hate them! But I also love them.
Yeah so true! Haha
I don't know much at all about aviation - but why would you bring the landing gear back up when you've gotten three greens, what if a gear failed later and you had to land on two wheels? Great video, though!
Thanks! Without any preknowledge of the situation we wouldn’t have brought the gear up at all like you said. So you are right, our maintenance had recommended to cylw the heat a few times as they had suspicions there was some air left in the hydraulic lines after bleeding them earlier. When the airplane is on the ground there can be some air left in the system that needs to be worked out, even after bleeding.
I'm curious as to what you use to record your videos? Quality is great! ...Is it a GoPro headmount of some sort?
Thanks Michael! I will make a video on that and share it! So stay tuned!!
@@EvanLuft Awesome! Cheers from Sault Ste. Marie
My friend, I'm from Russia, and I'm looking forward to your new videos
Thanks a lot! New vids coming very very soon! :)
Nice bit of deductive reasoning. Saved using the blow down bottle which would have ruined the rest of the day.
Thanks Simon! I owe that one to my brother who helped me out that day haha
Given that you were at 8000 ft for the flight, I was wondering - did you pressurize?
Yup! Still pressurized a little bit. It only raised the cabin about a 1000 feet in altitude to do that :)
@@EvanLuft thanks for replying. i wasn't sure.
Thanks for the video. It it were me I would have left the gear down.
You are right, In any other circumstance thats what should always be done. However, the gear system was bled in its last maintenence so we were advised to cycle the gear several times in the event that there was some air left in the system. Ironically, the uplock switch had issues on this flight too. So initially, we thought it was the system having some air that needed to be pushed out, not the switch. But you are absolutely right, if its down and locked... don't mess with it. If i was alone for sure.. I would have not touched it haha.
How do you get your passengers?
They live an hour away so I fly to pick them up!
@@EvanLuft What Im asking is; Is it a business? How do you start?
Fly to Farmingdale ny I'd love for you to teach me flying I live near by;)
One day I will have to go down there!
Do you voiceover the video as if you weren't doing a voiceover
Lol what do you mean? Lol I voice over after I make the video :p
Devouring the content, u fly corporate for a living?
I do part time. It’s an outlet for my aviation and adventure passion. Lots of fishing and mountain flying!
@@EvanLuft how cool. I love fishing as well. Bet those mountains have great fly fishing. I take my first flight lesson today.
Haha awesome!! 1. How was your flight lesson??? 2. Fly fishing?? Where abouts are you located? The mountains are so much fun!
@@EvanLuft My flight lesson was enjoyable. I am working and saving up and I plan to start maybe in about a month because the weather is not good here. I live in Atlanta. I have never gone flyfishing or caught a trout for that matter
