  • What an epic day for flying the turbine powered Cessna Conquest on a short 20 minute flight over the Rocky Mountains for a weekend of skiing in Invermere, BC Canada! We take off from Calgary Springbank Airport CYBW and climb to our cruising altitude of 14,000 feet, just enough to clear the tops of the mountains. Punching through the clouds at 265 knots only to descend IFR into the Invermere valley to land at Fairmont Hot Springs Airport CYCZ.
    There were plenty of amazing views, cloud surfing, and some good IFR flying to be had on this trip... EVEN A FLAT TIRE!!! (see landing).

    A little factoid about the 441...
    Customer deliveries of the $895,000 Model 441 began in September 1977. Just two months later, the sixth airplane off the production line came apart over Greensboro, Ala., killing all seven aboard. The engines were working fine and weather wasn't a factor. That crash triggered the FAA's grounding of the entire 441 fleet-twice-between 1977 and 1979. Cessna ended up redesigning key tail-section components, retrofitting the entire fleet and providing customers with loaner aircraft. The program affected nearly 100 airplanes and still stands as one of the largest and most expensive factory field modifications of a business aircraft ever.

      @@EvanLuft Back in the 90's my Dad flew a Conquest II when he worked for NASA. I was lucky enough to fly right seat with him a few times (I was in my twenties) when he would take it on the hour long flight to Dallas for line maintenance or A-checks. It's a sweet airplane, for sure. You're lucky you get to fly one! I never followed in my father's footsteps but now at the ripe old age of 54 I'm working on my PPL. Then I'm planning on buying my own bush plane. Thanks again for the video!

      Did that also affect the 425? I always thought it was 441 only... but then I am a Merlin Metro flyer.

    Its years since I changed a tyre on an aircraft.
    I'm quite surprised that they have tubes in. I was always taught that tubes and tyres cause friction.

    • @EvanLuft

    • @SimonAmazingClarke
      @SimonAmazingClarke Před 2 lety

      @@EvanLuft not a clue. At keast with a tube, you just need to carry a spare and not a whole wheel.

    Great video! How exactly would you avoid a bird in this type of situation? (I am considering getting my license so i know nothing)

    • @EvanLuft
      @EvanLuft  Před 3 lety

      Well I’m all honesty… it’s near impossible to actively avoid a bird strike if you see one headed straight for you. By luck usually you miss them but the most important thing is maintaining control of the airplane. So continue the approach, watch out for large flocks and report them to other aircraft if they are significant risk. Otherwise. By the time you spot the bird… you’re not in a position to move the airplane enough one way or the other to avoid it haha

    Why do u guys bring the flaps up so quickly....they aid in slowing you down ?

    • @EvanLuft
      @EvanLuft  Před 3 lety

      They do if you need more weight on the wheels for braking. Sometimes I’ll leave them down though as they can add drag and just use beta range on the power to slow down… minimizing the use of brakes.
