Why Are We Done With The 90s?

- If you've been on NBA Twitter or Tik Tok recently you've probably seen the recent trend of we're "Done with the 90s." Basically a bunch a guys have found lowlights of 90s NBA icons and have used that as definitive proof that the 90s was a horrible generation of basketball. While we agree the modern game is better, this trend is nothing but a lazy analysis of 90s basketball and at the end of the day is just really stupid, and we try to figure out why its even happening in the first place...

First of all, no MJ no today’s NBA.
Him and Chicago Bulls are single-handedly responsible for all the Euro players movement to NBA. You don’t have that perspective of a non-American basketball fan. 90s were so huge and made NBA popular worldwide.
Yup. As a Bulls/MJ fan, I will always give my flowers to Bird and Johnson. They were the ones to give fresh NBA faces and paved the way for MJ when the NBA was riddled with cocaine problems
and without Magic and Bird its quite possible the league would've nearly or actually gone bankrupt and folded -- league was in a tricky situation.
Crap I remember the Dream Team! Dropping 40 on a team and they STILL asked them for a autograph after the game.
It was more the dream team than the bulls for all the euro stars. But Jordan was certainly the center of it all.
MJ is the only player 99% of brits like me can name for example
People who watched the 90’s: Back in my day, players played defense
People who watched the 20’s: Back in my day, players shot three’s
People who watch the 2040’s: Back in my day, my parents told me that players had podcast and TikTok accounts
Thing is, I'd rather have plumbers in my team that know how to make ends meet than Gram-dwelling e-celebs, who are also part-time NBA players, that miss an entire season due to bruised feelings.

Both sides spend so much time hating they forget to enjoy the damn sport

Ironically Jordan's on the record for defending LeBron was "I'd force him left".
LeBron is literally left handed outside of basketball. He'll be fine.
Him saying he would force him to go left doesn't mean that he can't dribble with his left, it's just about trying to make things a bit tougher to score. It's not necessarily a disrespectful thing to say, it's pretty much the norm for good defenders.
@@SuperSikarloactually, during LBJs prime, the best one-on-one defenders against him were Jimmy Butler and Kawhi Leonard. I think MJ would just as capable to keep up with LBJ too
@SuperSikarlo well that's really sad then, because he has no left 😂

To be honest, I think holding to the the "Modern NBA Talent is Better" mindset is automatically starting off on the wrong foot, because that's not how talent works. Technology, opportunities, and available things to learn and grow from progress with time, not necessarily the innate abilities of individuals themselves. Saying modern players are naturally more talented than past ones simply because of the passage of time alone is like saying Bono's naturally more talented than Beethoven, or James Patterson more than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It's really hard to fully appreciate and give fair due to anything that's in the past if you automatically assume that the present is superior merely because it's the present.
So no, the current NBA players are not more talented than past ones. They just have access to more things that maximize their unique talents. Jordan would still be Jordan in today's era, Wilt would be Wilt, etc. As a matter of fact, they'd probably be even better. And the same goes for current players. Giannis would still be a physical menace in the post like D-Rob and Malone, but he'd never develop his handles because they'd tell him to cut it out like they did Ralph Sampson. Jokic would still be a beast, but he'd be stuck overseas until he's past his prime like Arvydas Sabonis was. Steph would still shoot the lights out, but it'd be more at a Reggie Miller level than the otherworldly level he's at now. He'd also be far more lethal from midrange.
But they are better, my son is going to be better than me and his son is going better than him that's how human evolution goes
@@yct2.0by that logic Marcus Jordan should have been the greatest basketball player ever and Bronny would he in the league by now, so no, thats not how evolution works.
Like the og comment said, its not about the natural “talent” of the individual, is about the slow progression of opportunities, technologies, medicine, scientific knowledge, analysis of the game, etc that push the overall game forward.
@@yct2.0 That's absolutely not how human evolution works.
@@Josue-wj2uf no cause Marcus is only 50% Jordan maybe if Jordan had him with a more tall athletic woman he would it have a change same with LBJ kids. But for example Bronny and Bryce are better shooters than Lebron and handled the ball better that's evolution.
Bringing up human evolution when we’re literally talking about a single human lifespan’s worth of time proves you have zero clue how human evolution works.
Anyway, OG comment is absolutely correct and you need to go outside.
Drop Kyrie in the 90s and he’d be called for a travel every other play
tons of players would be locked up because some of bad defenders from the 90s would probably be considered lockdown defenders in this era
On a side note, debating who is the GOAT is also quite difficult because of the different eras and players playing different positions. Not to mention a youtuber called Low made a good point that when having the GOAT debate with someone we have to decide what do we measure it by, accolades, longevity skill etc.
Very well put. You learn from what came before you and adapt and push it forward. The league will evolve again somehow and we will look back and think why doesn't said player do this and that. End of the day we will all have a bias to what we grew up watching. It doesn't mean what came before was trash, just different. Which by no means disregards or diminishes the greats that came before.
In a video about the nostalgia people hold for the old days of the nba, the flash games bit edit was really great and gave me some "Tim & Moby" era flashbacks 😂....man im getting old.
TLDR: Every era has its pros and cons, but we need to stop comparing eras. Different rules mean completely different competitive demands, which is why MJ would never claim his title as the GOAT
As someone who grew up with Bull's MJ, I think there's a lot to appreciate modern NBA. Also, something keep in mind is how the triangle offense is the 90s version of emphasizing ball movement among 3 players and mismatches in a physical era. Now, it's a true team sport where a successful team needs everyone to shoot and defend. I think the biggest problem right now is how offense and pace is prioritized over defense (I mean look at how many traveling, double dribbles, and offensive charges are uncalled). Sure, in the playoffs, defense becomes important, but they aren't highlighted enough. Plus, faster pace can slowly wear and tear the players. Also, Im not sure if all great modern players can play the 90s because hand checking and brutally physical defense limits a lot of basketball skills such as the 3 point shot (try shooting far when someone always a hand in your front)
That being said, I think LBJ can do well in the 90s because he's today's Magic Johnson while MJ's extremely competitive spirit (reminds me of Jimmy Butler with Kawhi's successes) would carry him. I mean he had an above average 3 pt shot in a physical era and even made 7 3 pts at 58% against the Warriors (irony)
RIP the Dreamcast.

I love the current as much as I do but I also love the feel the 90's. Hakeem, Magic, MJ the most inspirational and great nba players of all time. From where this starts with the Lebron vs MJ debate I love Lebron but I also love MJ and have respect for both of them and the era they played in. Both eras have negatives and positives. You should never compare eras because they both are way different.

Since when did we all agreed that the only way that generations can interact with each other is through needless hostility and snubbing?
As Kobe said, we are an extension of both the past and future. We'll always have a future to look forward to, and we'll always have a past to look back on. The NBA wasn't made last Tuesday, and it won't end next Tuesday. Being "done" with both the modern era and the 90s goes against that.

I find it funny how basketball is the only sport where eras disrespect each other instead of appreciating and learn from each other. Every other sport doesn't do that; so, why this one? This is one of the reasons why I say NBA fans are some of the worst and most hypocritical sports fans in the world.
Yeah, I see this one guy diss LeBron and talk about MJ and Kobe as GODS. Yet over in football, he also mentions how great Tom Brady is and that he's better than Patrick Mahomes, but have respect and also like Mahomes as well. Like I mentioned recently, NBA might have a crisis right now in terms of comparison, players, the game, certain eras, the media, the community as a whole. Basketball in 2024 needs a reality check!
@adriansmith5279 You also forgot to mention that NBA Fans will never let us rank a player as the Goat unless they go 6-0 in the NBA Finals but then when it comes to us ranking a player as the Goat in Football then all of the sudden their Championship game and series record doesn't matter because Tom Brady has lost Championship games in the NFL but most people say he's the Goat of NFL football and the thing is NBA fans try to rank players by how many rings they get but most of them don't even rank Bill Russell as the Goat or put John Havlicek and Sam Jones in their top 5 or top 10 of All Time.
@liamm6208 Facts! That's why I hate the ranking of players with ring counts. That's because if you think MJ is better than LeBron 'cause 6 over 4, then why we won't mention Bill Russell with 11(RIP Bill Russell). I get the part of rankings players with rings based on leadership abilities that come with the talent. But there have been so many guys that are in the Top 75, Top 100, Top 150 at least. Players who are rankings as All-Time Greats that don't have a ring. Meanwhile, some player you never heard of(that was mostly a benchwarmer) have like 2-3 rings! When you compare and contrast things, it does not make sense!
I agree 100% the talent is better now, but:
1. If you drop Irving or others players 20 years ago, they would be called for travel, palming and carrying the ball everytime
2. Players model their playing style in previous players, there's no curry without ray Allen, Reggie Miller and Steve Nash, there's no Reggie without Larry bird...no Kobe without Jordan, etc...
Love seeing a Henry Stickman clip in the wild.

It was, but now it's being applied to 90s players too, and that doesn't make sense

@ronel7836 I was gonna say the same. MLB and it's fans greatly respect the ones that came before them as well. NFL does as well, maybe not to the extent of the other 2 sports tho. For the most part tho, it's just the lebron and curry fan bases that do this.
@@swaymcthunder1219 I was never heavily invested in the MLB so I didn't know enough about it to comment. But it's good to know that the MLB is the same! 😅

Role players and “defensive” players of the 90s are ymca casuals today
@@SagaTheFunniest because that's what teams aren't looking for in today's game especially with some the softer rule changes
Its a lot harder than you think. Obviously the 3 ball, almost nobody in the 90s could shoot 3s. Theres no terrible double team rules that u gotta leave ur man wide open to double. Zone defense is legal now making it easier to guard slashers. Gameplans changing from iso scorers to ball movement. The death of the mid range jumpshot to 3 or key. Basically every player on the court nowadays needing to do more than one job (a player like dennis rodman would not be very useful nowadays). Unless youre a superstar most 90s players wouldn’t be able to make it today
@@SagaTheFunniest i can’t believe you would actually say something so braindead. Actually I can, all your “we’re done with the 90’s’ are dogshit arguments that make no sense if you stop and think about it for 10 seconds
@@justinherrera1700i could say that guards wouldn't do that well in the 90s as well due to how physical the game was. Back then, even during Birds and Magic's time, bigs were always valued highly, which is why MJ was drafted # 2 while Hakeem was # 1. Again, different eras had different competitive needs. The closest to today's Rodman I can think of would be a fusion of Tristan Thompson for rebounds and Draymond for not being afraid to get his hands dirty on defense.
Also, guards can shoot 3s in the 90s. For example, MJ had shot 7 3's at 58% against the Warrioers. Again, hand checking made a lot of shooting difficult (try shooting when the defender has his hand on your front). MJ's workaround (a signature move at the time) was his fadeaway shot to distance himself from the defender
2050s kids: "What's so special about LeBron? My favorite player is still playing at 45 and just won his 6th title. Why did this unathletic apathetic tall white guy Jokic own the whole league? Why couldn't Giannis do something on offense other than drive and dunk? What's so special about Curry's range? Anyone good can splash one from the logo if given enough space. Even WNBA players! Why did a G-leaguer keep winning the dunk contest? And did anyone back then actually try on defense? Did the league really get away with blatantly rigging games? James Harden was always driving to the rim and hooking a guy's arm, how is that a defensive foul? What's so impressive about KD as a scorer when he could simply shoot over everyone? He wasn't even 7 feet tall. Why weren't guys like AD, Embiid and Zion able to stay healthy? Was it really that hard to play 65 games in the regular season when they got paid that much? What a trash era!"

NBA fans love crapping on the past and never appreciate it as much as other sports honestly and I know it’s not everybody but it’s sad.
It's because all of the old generation craps on the newer generation. I'm not saying I agree with it but don't dish it if you can't take it. I mean TNT Thursdays probably has whole compilations complaining about the modern NBA.
Its because of how much old heads shit on today's game. Always praising the 90s.
@TheKazu42 while a lot of old heads talk shot about the game today, they don't talk shit about all the players that play today, unlike the younger generation who literally seem to respect no one but scottie pippen as a player. I don't hear many old heads talk shit about jokic, giannis. A lot respected the loyalty of dame.
@@swaymcthunder1219 then you're ignoring a lot of discourse. It's fairly common to see "everyone's soft, the 90s had real players. LeBron would never make it in the 90s"
@TheKazu42 I mean, most of the players today are soft imo. Saying the NBA today is soft doesn't mean that we think every player is soft. That lebron wouldn't survive in the 90s is foolish and doesn't represent all the people who grew up watching 90s basketball. Those are the super extreme ones, just like on the other side where people feel like Jordan could only win in the playoffs until he got scottie (even though he was coming off the bench his rookie season during the playoffs and had nothing to do with Jordan averaging 40). Those absolutely foolish ones on each side still only represent a small portion of the fans from either side. They are just always the ones looking to be the center of attention, thus it feels like they represent a large portion of that fanbase, which isn't fully true. I also understand that there is a portion of old heads that only appreciate jokic cuz it fits their narrative of athleticism isn't everything, but most just appreciate him cuz his style of play is simply beautiful. Either way, I'm somewhere in between. Started high school in the early 2000s, got a little bit of both worlds. No doubt the talent level today is as great as it ever was, but I do believe fundamentals are lacking in today's game. Most of these arguments to me are pretty silly tho. People are allowed to have nostalgia from whatever Era they come from, no need for all the disrespect.

It’s not a talk of skills, it’s a talk of natural talent. NBA players are not more talented, they have more skills. Let someone like Jordan, Larry bird, Kareem, or Reggie miller grow up in the same era as people like ant and sga, and they would show you. Old players had plenty of talent, they just hadn’t developed as many skills.
I don't think you can when the 90s era focused on physicality. I'm sure if Bird, Magic, and MJ played in today's NBA, they would thrive in their own way

I feel like preferring different eras is fine, but disrespecting different eras is dumb.
Like, I prefer slow, grind it out, post dominant iso-ball era play, cause I grew up in the 2000s. My dad grew up in the 70s, so he preferred the Showtime run n gun style of play, it makes sense. I'm always gonna prefer that over the travelfest I see on TV today, but I won't disrespect someone for liking the game today more than in the past.
They had me believing STOCKTON HAD NO LEFT! Then I watch his 28 assists game and almost half his plays are to the left including blowing by his guy and getting to the hole multiple times WITH HIS LEFT.
And it would take like a minute for Jordan and past stars to start hitting the air mailed 3s Steph invented, just like it took Lebron and the rest of the NBA, and they'd adjust to the new strategies recent analytics has birthed.
Military historians say you could drop a great general from ancient times like Julius Ceasar into the Napoleonic Wars and he'd figure things out pretty quickly and you'd want him leading your army within a few months. Yet if you dropped Napoleon into WWII the modernization revolution in every area of life would require years to get to speed and who knows how his exact traits and interests would match what is needed. And that was before we were dropping people on the moon. The NBA hasn't that type of revolution since the 90s, or even the 60s.
Jordan would still quickly conquer like Julius Ceasar in today's NBA. He'd still have the best hangtime and be in the argument for best athlete. Even an ancient legend like Jerry West could touch the top of the square at age 35 jumping in Converse and that same year was 2nd in the NBA in steals per game with 2.6 as well as .7 blocks, which was the first year (73-74) those stats were kept and his last year. Give that man half a year of modern sports science and new shoes and he'd be blowing by old Buicks like Harden and Luka.
The freak athletes of every era like West and Wilt will still be freaks, and every era will have unathletic guys like Harden dominating as well. The change in athleticism from the 90s is hardly discernible.
There's so many reasons why james isn't the greatest Which isn't a bad thing

This video almost made me choke on my lunch lol
the 1960s to 1970s, when the NBA started to get popular. you got Wilt chamberlain, Bill Russel, Kareem Abdul Jabbar getting, but the NBA was struggling a bit.
the 1980s was what I consider “The Golden Age” of basketball, where basketball started to became popular thanks to Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and the Bad Boy Pistons. Basketball was kind of dying out, but thanks to Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Bad Boy Pistons, Basketball had a resurgence of popularity. This was also when Michael Jordan entered the league.
The 1990s is when I think Basketball became super popular. This was when Basketball reached its highest peak in popularity. The Chicago Bulls were so good that everyone immediately knew that if Michael Jordan entered the Finals, he would automatically win.
There were also great players, like Hakeem Olajuwon, Karl Malone and John Stockton, Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller, Clyde Drexler and Gary Payton.
2000s NBA is what I consider to be the peak of NBA. Its when I consider NBA to be at its very best. Everyone was rivals with each other.
There are so many great NBA players. To name a few: Kobe Bryant, Shaq, Kevin Garnett, Allen Iverson, LeBron James, Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki, Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter, and more.
2010s was when I consider NBA to be at its most skilled. The NBA got more faster paced, and more skilled players started to arrive. To name a few: Lebron, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Steph Curry, Russel Westbrook, Anthony Davis, Demarcus Cousins, Paul George, and more.

Highlights of MJ aged liked gold, and it’s easy for everybody with a minimal knowledge about basketball to watch them and understand why he’s the GOAT. People who don’t should just SHUT UP.
I'm aware my opinion is just another one that will get lost in the internet void. But I'll share it anyway. I must say from the start that the argument of today's players being more talented and skilled is disingenuous. It looks like players are more skilled, but it is not necessarily that way. Players today look more skilled mainly because of the rules and how referees call the games. Referees are very lax calling basic infractions like traveling, carrying, and double dribbling. Many players will look like wizards with genius handles under those circumstances. When there's no really hard defense opposing you, you'll look like a superstar scoring uncontested layups and 3-pointers. Let's keep it real. There's no way to really quantify how much better are players today if compared to players from 30 or 40 years ago. That being said, I'm confident that if players from the 90s play under today's rules and conditions, they won't look as untalented as many people say. Under the same token, if players from the 2020s play under the 80s/90s rules and conditions, they won't look as super talented and skilled as they allegedly are. Unfortunately, we will never know for real.
This stupid trend of 'We Done With The 90s' is not about a clash between generations of fans. This is mainly about LeBron James fanboys who can't cope with the reality of their idol not being universally loved and respected, much less considered as the GOAT. Because they can't win the GOAT debate with arguments and statistics, they now are relying on trashing an entire decade of NBA history. Many consider the 90s as the gold era of the NBA. For me, the best period of the over seven decades of the NBA's existence extends from 1979 to 2010. The highlight of that period was the Chicago Bulls dynasty (1991 - 1998). So, it's not enough to demean Jordan's skills. They have to demean the entire decade to create and push the narrative that Jordan can't be the GOAT because his era was trash. It goes without saying that it's completely stupid. It's no coincidence the 'done with the 90s' trend began shortly after LeBron reached 40k points scored. It's a great achievement that, regardless of how much ESPN and mainstream media celebrated it, most NBA fans didn't care about it. Also, the allegations of LeBron's alleged usage of steroids/PEDs are starting to gain traction. LeBron's career is starting to look too similar to Barry Bonds'. To counter the lack of love and cheating allegations, LeBron fanboys took the stupid path of trashing the 90s. Since LeBron became the defacto face of the NBA in 2011, the league has regressed in quality and popularity. Sure, players today are more "skilled" and "athletic". But what they have in skills and athleticism they lack in competitiveness, basic fundamentals, discipline, and respect for the audience. You cannot expect the NBA to be highly regarded and liked considering how overrated and uninspiring the present era is. The NBA of the 80s, 90s, and early 00s, set the standard of what is great basketball. Today's NBA is not living to the standard. Michael Jordan set the bar for what it is to be the best in basketball. LeBron James has never reached that bar, much less set a new one. Young fans and media pundits can't or won't acknowledge that because acknowledging that would destroy their narratives and their minds would explode due to cognitive dissonance. The only way some of them can shield their minds is by keeping with the hypocrisy and lies. Others will keep with the narratives to perpetuate the discussions because is what's best for their personal and financial interests. Those who really like or are complacent with today's NBA can feel fortunate to receive the product they like. But do not pretend to not receive pushback if you keep defending today's weaknesses by bashing past strengths.
First of all, the argument of the GOAT is a matter of opinion. It's just that the majority rules in favor of Michael Jordan, with good reason. Jordan doesn't even consider himself the GOAT, and he has openly dismissed that debate. Also, there is no "winning" in that debate because overall, it's been beaten to death and revived countless times. Honestly, who gives a crap anymore? Secondly, many older basketball fans are just as complacent in this "we done with the 90s" nonsense as the younger fans who started and took part in it. If they wanna be objectively critical of today's game, that is fine because it definitely could be better in a lot of ways. However, the degree that it has gotten to is straight up ridiculous. Also, when they claim that current players would not look as talented or skilled back then as they do today, their only argument is what would be done to the players. They don't consider the way the players would respond to that situation. Also, where did the allegations of steroid/PED usage come from, and why are they coming up now? What proof do they have of this? Finally, I highly doubt that LeBron alone is the reason that the league has regressed. He may be a big reason, but not the only one.
the era of the podcasters and so-called player basketball analysts
This is why I don’t use Twitter or TikTok lol. People just be saying anything on those apps for clout the brain rot is kinda crazy
I don’t think this generation of fans will hate on the future generations as much as old heads hating on today’s NBA. They’re the ones who triggered this trend and I’m glad they’re getting exposed.
NBA CZcams topic of the week
Podcasters/Social Media Influencers will be the ultimate insult
I want whoever runs that D Ham muse acc arrested
The wild thing is that the bulls would def dominate in todays league for sure
Facts
Notice aint no Hornets fans saying the 90s sucked..
Imagine if the players of the past were allowed to carry the ball and take extra steps
Kyrie in the 90s would be called for so much carrying and traveling, zeke has said he'd have done more if the rules had allowed it. Fyi kyrie has the greatest handles ever
It's just similar to the GOAT debate it's pointless if we compare era's with different set of rules , achievements , stats etc. This is because that hypothesis that to say this player is better back then to what it is now is hard to prove we just compare stats and cannot make a time machine to make them go head-to-head to see who's better and who's not
"I stand ontop of the shoulders of Giants."
Theres the issac newton version of that quote and the lebron one from recently which was As athletes, we stand on the shoulders of giants. Which is funny as the younger fans who have no understanding of what he means by that are also the ones that idolize him
Can we do this with WWE???????
The guy who first started it didn’t cherry pick clips from jordan’s full career, it was game tape from an NBA FINALS GAME
I agree with most of your points. I think comparing eras has always been silly and a lot of times dishonest. But I will say the rules back them were so much more strict. So if you threw Kyrie Irving into the 90's league, he would get called for traveling literally every play. I am not saying ALL 90's players would be able to have that skill, but I am saying players were not allowed to be skilled in that way, Travels were called if your hand hit the side of the ball when dibbling, let alone palming it. lol And also the gather step wasn't allowed. So a lot of players today would get called for traveling, for doing moves they normally do. They are just two wildly different times, where I think each era would struggle being in the opposite era.
Kyrie’s ball-handling probably wouldn’t be allowed in the 90s. Just watch what Allen Iverson would get called for even in the late 90s. There’s a lot of examples of great ball handlers from the pass trying popular moves of today and be called of for a carry or double dribble.
I went back and watch games from the 90s since I grew up in the 2000s. The rules were very strict on ball handling.
