The Decline of the NBA All Star Game

- The NBA All Star game is this weekend in Indianapolis and honestly both of us had forgotten. The All Star game used to be one of the highlights of the NBA Calendar, but in recent years has devolved into a parody of itself. Nothing but three pointers and dunks, with little to no defense being played. We hope this weekend's game will put on a good show but considering the past decade of all star games, the event has definitely declined

So many people forget that during the 90s and early 2000s, everyone played DEFENCE in an ALL STAR GAME. Now, it's just a free scoring buffet.
Seems they’re all made of sand nowadays though, they’re all scared of getting injured
@@DW51380injuries can really end a career look at derrick rose bro
@chrisuncleahmad exactly it was just a few All-star games where they played almost no defense and ots always been pretty lackluster til 4th quarter
this is the future
I wish they would go back to every team wearing there actual team jerseys
Bro that 2017 shot charts be lookin like mycareer in 2k24💀
That was insane
I feel like the Paul George spooked thing is factual
In terms of jerseys, just base it off the late 80's and early 90's styles. There's a reason why those were so iconic.
If new kids seen their favorite stars in old school jerseys, they would realize how crap the new designs are.
Because at the time it was still a sport and not full entertainment WWE bull***. The players used to respect the game and were not inflated fake superstars
My favorite is the navy blue late 90’s to early 2000’s Rockets jersey
I liked when they all wore their team jerseys
SANE PERSON!!
Like golf has "yellow jacket", make "All Star Team" a time honoured look!!
So it's TEAM - not just an accomplishment!!
The 2020 All Star Game was a classic ngl
Definitely
frr
You must be young
@@bubbles1525_compared to recent all star games it’s the best. You’d have to go back to early 2010’s or late 2000’s to find a better one
2022 wasn’t bad either, last years was horrible tho
The year they went hard in honor of kobe was goated
I think the best fix for the All Star Game is for the winner side to get Home court advantage for the Finals. That’ll make most of the playoffs players play playoff-type ball imo
I agree. Most of them would be in the play-offs anyway.
How about you make it a bunch of games 3v3 skirmishes and who ever wins more wins the whole thing. They would probably play harder
@@KriegerPlaysChess not a bad take actually. I do feel like it should be a lower stake game that I would actually want to watch.
A 1v1 tournament would be so interesting for the All Star Game. I have no idea why they haven’t done it yet
Because all stars don't want to be shamed on live TV when they lose
egos
Because nobody has interest in that trash!!
They barely wanna play team ball!!!
They should have a stipulation that the winner of the All-Star game between the Western Conference or Eastern Conference gets to have the conference Champion host the NBA Finals and the winner of the NBA Emirates Cup gets an extra lottery pick that they can't trade. And also as a baseball fan, f**k you for saying that the stipulation that the MLB had for the All-Star game was drastic because it actually gave us some of the best moments in baseball history.
THE ALL-STAR GENERATION MATCH UP... siick idea..
You guys just came up with the best idea I have heard for the All-Star weekend..
The generational game.
All-Star youngs against All-Star vets..
I say that be fun
My favorite channel on YT
the fact that i got an ad for the all star game right before this video was pure comedy
It's the sign of the times. Why was the game competitive up to the 2010's? Because the vets set the tone. If you don't play, you'd get called out. Who are the vets now? Guys like Lebron, KD, etc etc who care more about their brand than basketball....
new gen vs. old gen would be wild but smaller teams would go crazy
I agree 100% on going back to players wearing their own team jerseys!
Kemba Walkers career got derailed bc Nick Nurse forced him to play damn near the entire all star game on a hip injury, that's the main reason guys don't want to play it anymore.
Facts.. They forget stuff like that
That's the thing. He played on a hip injury. They have injury replacements now.
@@boogiedown747True, and them giving guys the all star selection even when they're injured has helped but still guys are cautious
I had him in fantasy…. He struggling with his injury before that
his career got derailed the next season after the stem cell injection. He played well in the bubble
been watching these guys forever love the content🗣️🔥
It needs to improve but the overall nba all star weekend is still light yrs better than any other sport in the country. Outside of the homerun derby the rest are boring
this i can agree on, for a few years the dunk contest was boring too, up until last year when mac mcclung won it, between 2017 and 2022. the 2016 was one of the best ones, or the best one, based on personal preference
I think the MLB has the best All Star game personally.
I will say one thing for the NBA’s All Star game though:
At least they still play it unlike the NFL pro bowl.
@@fortynights1513 Im talking about the entire weekend not just the game. MLB is nice but other than the derby it doesnt get the same type of draw
@@fortynights1513yea I watched the ProBowl a few times and was like, damn they don't try..
@@pimpnamedslickback7780If you go by the whole weekend, then the NBA definitely has the best all star weekend.
But the MLB’s has the best game itself I would argue.
You should talk about the 2001 nba all star game. Because it was so iconic, it showed everything in what an nba all star game is. Having fun, but still being competitive. But then once the fourth quarter hits it's game time. And there is where you will see some of the best nba games of the season.
All I know about All star Weekend these days is that 25 game post All star weekend stretch when the season gets more Intense and slowly into playoff basketball
0:26 No defense. Might as well have this game at the park. 😆
It says something when the celebrity game is taken more seriously than the actual all star game.
Recently watched the 1993 all-star game . Defence from the tip off haha . Was great .
Watched a highlight reel of the 01 game recently.
Looked like there was more effort on defense. Some cool blocks too.
@@fortynights1513 nice
To be fair the Drew league is in the off-season. The all star game is in the middle of the season where there’s like 20 something games left and teams want to prep for the playoffs.
The drew league seems to be for the cameras, the same as the all-star game. Is there much of a difference apart from the different times they take place? Apart from defense quality, of course.
@@boogiedown747I don’t think there’s much difference. Sure players will play but I don’t think they’ll play close to 75-100%. What looks like highlight plays and such may look like going 75-100%, but it could actually be like 50%. These are professional athletes. What they can do on the court is almost inhumane for most mortals. Our 75-100% may be their 40-50% effort.
Some great ideas . I like that cash idea prize coming back to the team . 3v3 as well would be awesome sauce 😎.
I think, by and large, all-star games are kind of a relic of a bygone era. The novelty used to be "oh wow you're seeing all these big stars you don't normally see and they're playing together"
but in the era of a) superteams where plenty of superstars are teammates and b) social media and easily accessible highlights...what value do they really have beyond "tradition"? nobody remembers anything that happened in an all-star game proper, usually only the support events.
EDIT: I see the 3v3/2v2 proposal and...NHL is doing it, it's not working there either haha
To be fair the past 2-3 years there are a lot more superteams so teams aren't really "super" anymore
Add another layer to it, have the top 10 teams in both conferences play in a 3v3 single game elimination tournament. Make it a first to 15, 1s and 2s game, and for players that aren't on teams in the top 10 in their conference have them as free agents that can be picked up by any team.
When it comes to clips, I think yall need to make a whole clips channel. Takes up too much space in the sub box even if the content is awesome. Keep a channel just for the pod
Scott McKnight got hurt during the all star game almost kept the nets out the finals
This video aging like wine for the next year
This all star game shit been ass for a minute, I really like the 3 on 3 idea. Yo Ben its your cousin Zach just wanted to say been watching your videos for a while now and yall have become my favorite NBA youtube channel to watch, keep the great vids coimng you guys!
2001 was one of the best all star games
As far as the injury concern and if it’s ever happened, imma just point out Nick Nurse played Kemba over 40+ minutes in the 2020 all star game after resting his knees the prior games to the break, and Kemba was never the same after that
Besides that, can’t think of any significant ones
Which ever conference wins the game should have home court in the finals like baseball
MLB don’t even do that anymore cause it was stupid
I gotta be having Deja vu I could’ve sworn y’all posted this already cuz of the hotel scenes
Tfw when the ad I got for the video was for the nba all star game
Babe wake up, new synthetic
The 2v2 and 3v3 is a good idea, cus you're getting something you don't normally get, and so if they'er not playing 100%, they're still giving you something to watch
Thats a good point about the drew and summer league stuff
i remember in the mid 90's when McDonald's had an NBA All Star Game voting poll. u read magazines about themselves, u feel a sense of personal connection with the players back then without social media and ur vote actually mattered. SLAM Magazines was the shit the nba players had a sense of aura larger than life something that u strive to be. now it's feels scripted all of the modern nba players cry online making fake accounts to troll, trolls. the street ball format doesn't fit the allstar game.
They need to add the Triple stacked hoop from MTV's Rock and Jock, the lowest basket was regular if you hit the middle one it was 25 and the highest was 50 (teams were allowed 1 per game), Gary Payton put up 151 points in a game. You could lower those to 10 and 20 a piece but it would be more fun.
I'd be interested in seeing 'seconds' trialled. The stars who get selected can choose another player to represent them if they're so worried about injuries. Still show up for the weekend and be apart of it; but wouldn't that be something to see?
Yalls next video or a future video should be that the NBA has a jersey problem, yall talked about it but every team feels like it has 5 or 6 jerseys a year and always have 2 or 3 new ones
When was the last time the All Star game was in your town? It always feels like the same 5 cities but I could be wrong
Bout 2010 mines was Dallas
@@rev3ffect cool! I live in San Antonio and last for us was 1996 I think
1959 😭😭
@@jakeb.3497 dang which city is that!?
Y’all should do a video explaining what the the Drew League is!
i was not expecting cold war BO mp music 🔥
I like your idea of a 2v2 or 3v3, heck throw in some 1v1! Let the players decide who plays which. This could be fun.
i got an idea whichever team wins the East vs West All star game the conference that wins gets homecourt advantage in the NBA FINALS
This year's ASG simultaneously set a new HIGH in points scored (211) and a new LOW in watchability. THIS GAME SUCKED!
Do you play out the all star game in 2k franchise mode?
My thoughts exactly. You guys are true basketball svantssssss
I expect there to be load management in effect and none of the starters are going to be available, all sitting on the sidelines in pedestrian clothes. Result would be the Pistons vs Wizards for the All Star game
3:49 They said they’re gonna treat it as more of a game this year Adam Silver said on the Pat McAfee Show that they told players they want them to take it more seriously and better defense. Then Tyrese Haliburton went on the Pat McAfee show and he said before the season league officials met with every team and told them they wanted them to tale the In-Season Tournament seriously (they did) and take the All-Star game seriously (so let’s hope they do lol).
they just need some interesting gimmick like how the skills challenge had themed groups (Giannis and his bros, rookies, etc.)
I loved the Elam Ending. Made every all star game end in a game winner. Even if it was a blowout it was exciting to see the last shot
USA vs World All-Star game could also be competitive
the players are too soft nowadays to do that
The Algorithm Gods have spoken, this hit my feed just as the 1st Quarter of the All Star Game started. Both teams currently have 40 points with 2 minutes to go in the First Quarter and I'm already over it.
I'm just excited to see jalen brunson in his first all-star game
Hell, I’d say that they should make it so each of the top 10 teams has a guaranteed AS, while they have 5 wild card spots. Then you have the team-wide payout that y’all talked about, and it could really help some young players
8:57 perfectly said why would a fan care about them playing over money- they already rich
As you said with what the MLB did. East vs West. Winnner gets homecourt advantage in the finals
Funnily enough, I believe fans and the media in the internet age have some responsibility in this. Let's say, for example, Paul George decides to try and ball out in the all-star game. No one is going to give a shit. All the discourse would be "he's not doing it in the playoffs". It was similar with the in season tournament, "it's not the NBA championship so it doesn't matter". It's not that the players have no responsibility in this, but if everything you hear in the media is that it doesn't matter because it's not the championship, well, both the teams and the players are better off not trying at all and resting for the games that actually matter. A star does not get his contract to play the all-star game, he gets his contract to win a championship for his team.
Now, to be clear, I do care about these things. I want players to compete and I will give props for any game you ball out in, be it all-star game, regular season game or in season tournament game, but I completely understand that for the players and their teams it's not worth it most of the time.
Scrapping the all star game fully is a crazy take, just mentioning that was ridiculous😂
If you are watching this one on right now it doesnt seem ridiculous... this is pointless and so boring
I js realized the tribal chiefs music in the background of the outdo 💀☝️
☝🏽
I think the allstar games decline has to do with the actual games I the season looking exactly like the allstar game with no defense and effort at all back in like 2016 (last good alltstar year in my opinion) the effort on defense was much higher during the actual season and it was nice to see the all stars play soft on all star weekend bc they earned it. And nowadays with all the rest days these dudes be taking they already have had that rest weekend pretty much
Maybe they should take the In Game tournaments Idea and make it Division Vs Division maybe ? Each Division Picks it's all Star team from players on teams in that division and they go up against The other Divisions , Short games of Maybe 8 minutes a Half .... I think that added onto the already flourishing In season tournament could be a lot more entertaining cause now each Division will have a Point to prove
It's east vs west again, which is very good.
The draft version was a great idea, but nothing to be done over and over again.
They should implememt a veteran vs young guys aspect to every competition like dunk, 3 point contest and so on.
Like 3 vets and 3 young players in each of them.
And by vets I mean superstar vets.
Just put some real stakes to it. They are there representing their conference. So lets say the west wins, all western conference teams gets a game in the winning column and the east looses a game. Something like that, something that really impacts the season for all teams.
What if the winning conference gets to host the finals? Seems like an easy fix that gives the game high stakes
I think one solution would be to just play a quarter of basketball. That’s it. 12 minutes of play after the contests. that would lead to smaller margins and that, I think, brings back the competition. I know it’s impossible because the ASG brings lots of money in ads and tickets, but stil…
Warn us b4 u drop that “hit or miss” jumpscare
I can't believe what has happened to this league. The all star game used to be an event. The only difference between it and a regular game was that they made sure they didn't do anything to hurt each other. It was a real game with the best players in the league going against each other in the greatest pickup game. Now it's just an overhypped shoot around.
Totally agree with this video. 👍
a 1v1 tournament would be so cool to have
That idea excited me more than the all star game 😂coming up. Mentally visualising 😂.
Would love to see World vs. USA All-Star Game
Guys phone it in on a random Tuesday night on the road in December - not the ALLSTAR game
The yearly all star game is boring content from NBA CZcamsrs truly a tradition at this point
Why is the all star game even taking place During the season? There’s still another like 2 months of games left to play, and there’s no guarantee that someone who’s an all star for the current break would be at the end.
If they played a game of crunch that would b dope AF
Why tf is Dame starting. He shouldn't event be a reserve
Soooooo how about that Cavalier video?
How about this idea:
Since it's east vs west now you can say that which ever conference win then every team who has a all star on the winning team gets a free win as a reward for both players and thejr respective teams
2022 was really good. Curry was insane
a 1v1 tournament for all star weekend would make people go crazy
Luka v Joker
Giannis v Lebron
Steph v Dame
Nash v Bieber
Wake me up when the conference finals get here.
I remember a few all star games were decent with the draft format.
Make it a full exhibition game. If they aren't creative in shooting 3s or dunk. It doesn't count. It would at least be funny as hell. The MVP will go to whoever brought the most swag and style.
It’s not watchable. Look at the score right now, it is 104-89 at halftime. This shit is embarrassing.
Ya and no highlight plays.. 95% 3 balls while the players lazily dribble up the court looking like they are half asleep, they should honestly scratch the all star game next year
I watch allstar weekend for the dunk contest
To add stakes to the all star game they should make whichever conference wins gets home court advantage in finals.
They should make it to where of you lose in the all star game or win it counts for the record of the team you represent
Go look at the 2001 ALLSTAR game - best I ever saw - watch that East comeback in the 4th
It is? Totally forgot.
Maybe for the charity aspect add like 10,000 dollars extra for every block or steal. Cause in 2020 i vividly remember kyle taking a charge for his teams cause. Yeah the players dont need the money but those people the charities are trying to help do. Also yes individual jerseys need to return. They can have the same colored warmups but Make the All Star Game Colorful Again
Brad miller is in the only injury I remember
Maybe if the All Star game was the All League defensive team vs the All League offensive team, then it might get interesting
2011 and 2010 were awesome
The other events are ok, 3 pt contest, dunk contest. The unwatchable ones are the skills competition and all the star game.
What if all the players in the all-star game had to put in 5-10% of their salary for that season & the pot is divided among the winning team?
I actually forgot too.Instead of having that lame in season tournament Adam Silver needs to rework it into all star weekend as a 2 v 2 tournament. I would love to see a 1 v 1 but today's players are soft and don't want to be embrassed.
Yall missed the best game we could possibly have: Team USA (American All Stars) vs Team World (Foreign stars). Luka, SGA, Jokic, Giannis, Embiid vs Lebron, Curry, Tatum, AD, and Booker? That's a game right there!! Although I like the pick up game tourney, they can spread out the games to be like an all day thing, plenty of time for ad space, brings back a competitive edge too.
