Baseball has the best All Star weekend because you can play the exhibition game the same way as a regular season game. The pitchers pitch the same way, the hitters hit the same way. Also, the HR derby is similar to the 3 point contest where the participants aren’t going hard beyond their means but it has the same type of flair and allure as the dunk contest used to. The issue with the dunk contest is a lot of these guys just don’t have the time to practice these things and then as a result don’t want to embarrass themselves by doing standard dunks that will get them roasted on social media.

Another thing that hinders the Dunk Contest from being epic are those god awful judges. How they didn't give Toppin at least an 48 for the second Dunk still is beyond me. It just felt like they're grading JB high cause he's the biggest name of the four, even though all his Dunks were ass. So why would any Stars even try to prepare anything cool when five random old heads give random points like they're flipping coins each time.

Truth is that the All Star weekend will probably be like this from here on out. No one is risking an injury for a basically meaningless game especially now with the 65 game requirement. There’s no incentive for them to want to try. It’s just a showcase of moves they would never use in an actual game.

    • @pemp9606

That’s the thing. It matters because it’s for entertainment. All-Star weekend is supposed to be the NBA’s premier event, but the players don’t care because they aren’t getting paid. It’s gross tbh

    • @GoingOnAStreak

@@pemp9606I don’t know if it’s that one-dimensional. Sure a money incentive would change things (how much would it have to be though!!! Probably obscene amounts right?!) but it’s not like any parties want the players to play hard. Even slight risk of injury means that the entire fan base, city, organization and stakeholders of the Celtics want their boys to go 80% at most.

I swear I don’t know where all of these people came from that expect the players to grind like it’s game 4 down 2-1. Wtf? It never has been. Never will be. Might be less effort now unless it’s a tie game late, but still it was never supposed to be anything but a chance for the guys to come together as the best players in the league on the same floor for a night.

Also I think its a terrible precident to set by paying players for playing hard during all star weekend. How much money is enough money? Its not like injuries are a new thing, all star games of past years have had players go at least 70% effort without a pay raise. Now that players are getting paid more than ever and have contract stipulations for more pay for being an allstar, it would be dumb for a league that is already losing revenue to have to pay even more. As much as I would like to punish players for not playing hard enough, it may be hard to quantify effort. Rather the all star game has to change fundamentally in order to provide something fresh every year for players to want to get involved.

    • @benjaminbronnimann3966
      @benjaminbronnimann3966 Před 3 měsíci +13

@@pemp9606 They're already playing for entertainment like 80 times per season, why would they risk getting injured for a meaningless showcase game ? It's the same problem in the regular season, the lower the stakes are the lower the intensity will be and since there are 82 games per season there isn't a single regular season game that actually matters, to me that's one of the flaws of the american sports system in general, there are no stakes until the playoffs start. If they want an intense All-star game they better give the prospect of some kind of reward (preferably not money) for the winners or move the all-star weekend to the off-season, otherwise it's smarter for players to preserve themselves for the coming playoffs.

My idea would be a 3 v 3 tournament. That would be perfect because there are 12 players in each conference. The top 4 voted players in each conference would be the captain and there would be a lottery of who gets the first pick in their conference. Then they can do a snake draft and go through the single-game elimination tourney. The cap score should be around 25 points, win by at least 3. The final would be the best team from the east vs the best team from the west and they could increase the cap score for that final game. This way it would be more competitive and the fans would see their favorite player play a full game.

i’ve watched every all-star weekend since 2004 starting at 5 years old & the only way i see them saving it is by moving it to the off-season. the contract & legacy incentives are always at the back of player’s minds & injuries will always pose a severe risk to that. the extra money incentive for all-stars seems nice in theory, but at the end of the day contract incentives from making all-NBA or going on postseason runs are more lucrative for these guys who are already on $40M a year contracts.
as a LAL fan, i found myself hoping lebron & AD both played under 20 minutes & didn’t exert much effort because we have a lot of ground to make up before the postseason & we need them healthy to have any chance of a run. i can’t sit here & expect other players to play hard when i don’t even want my team’s franchise players to knowing whats at risk. move all-star weekend to the off-season so these guys aren’t risking all-NBA honors or postseason runs & the issue will take care of itself imo.
i also believe the dunk contest needs player association approved judges that keep the position annually & also a revamp to the voting criteria. this will build trust among stars & other big-name dunkers & give them hope they won’t get hoed by judges personal agendas & bias which has been a problem since the 90s. people keep saying “we’ve seen every dunk” but i think that’s a cop out. mac mcclung came out saturday night with a dunk that’s never been done before, wowed the crowd & got social media hype only to be given a 46 by the judges. ultimately he did win, but i firmly believe he dumbed down his dunks to appeal to the judges instead of the fans after they did him dirty on that first score. they robbed us of a show because they don’t like ingenuity for whatever reason. they rewarded jaylen brown for paying homage to former players & legends with little to no creativity & there’s just no room for that in an event that’s already struggling.
i appreciate the NBA tryna honor hometown legends of the city that’s hosting, but with it comes too much interference from bias. just my two cents on the topic. aside from these, i really don’t know what else you can do to try & save all-star weekend. a 1v1 tournament won’t save the event in its entirety.

Maybe some Banana Ball type rules might work? Like the winner for each of the first 3 quarters gets 5 "points," and the the 4th quarter starts at 5-10 or 0-15 then it's Elam ending to 50 or 40 points points.
I thought this maybe could work because the reason why the first year of Elam ending ASG worked was that the score was really close, and the other years were blowouts so the team didn't really had much of a chance. But if we limit the deficit with the "points" system, we will get some closer results in the 4th since the biggest deficit you could possibly get entering the 4th is 15 and if ur already down 10-0 at half you might wanna care slightly more in the 3rd.

Dunk contest - Set up each nba player with a day of practicing with Jordan Kilgannon or Isaiah Rivera to work on some creative dunks that can be doable
3pt contest - Keep corner 3s, move wing and top of the key out to the 4pt line, still the only contest the players care about
All Star game - The main guys are pushing 35-40, they dont want to try hard in a game with no meaning. Make it a 3v3 or some sort of a Rico Hines run type deal

So if the east wins and the Celtics make the finals, they get game 7 at home or home court advantage regardless of standings and records.
It’s a good way to give the players something to unite and play together to achieve. And the players may actually be competitive because it’s something that could potentially really benefit them later in the season.

    1. Have a leaf blower over the back board pointed at the rim. Give one player on the bench a remote control that can activate it for a short second.
    2. 1990's quarter where the players have to wear the baggy Allen Iverson style shorts and jersey.
    3. Ice the shooter... make a player put their shooting hand in ice water before free throws.
    4. Opposing team chooses a quarter to turn the rim vertical.
    5. have Gladiator/ultimate ninja style obstacle courses in between quarters where the winner gets extra points.
    6. Have the Simon Says halftime guy come out and do a game with the players.

Just make the ASG determine home court in the finals, I mean whoever wins proves to be in the tougher conference and thus does deserve to get home court in the finals if they win said conference. ~85% of ASG players have some chance of making the finals so they will really have a vested interest to win it. And even the players with a very small to no real chance know they will be roasted mercilessly if caught phoning it in as it will be perceived as them giving up on their team

And for their All-Star game, they're actually playing normally like a real game. For the most part, pitchers can't turn it down as well as the batters. The pitcher has to throw some strikes and the batter want to hit the ball. NFL and NBA All-Star competition, it's easy to go way less than 100 percent of how you perform.

I absolutely love the idea of making it a four team tourney. Theres more talent in the league than ever, so if were gonna continue to give one or two all star nods to deserving, but fringe players (mike conley, jrue holiday) we need to increase the rosters. Four team captains could draft teams of ten, that way the bench unit sees at least 16-20 minutes, a problem for the end of the bench rotation in recent years. If you wanna divvy it up by conference you could add that the winning final team MAYBE gets home court in the finals MAYBE, hot take, adding stakes makes things competitive and interesting. Lastly, give the winning team (1/4 of the total all stars) a ring for winning the tournament. Players like dame are already clearly motivated to receive accolades, players want hardware and if you just give them that from the get go its lackluster. Maybe the winning team gets a charity prize for their hometown/city of play, idk.

  • @huxleybennett4732
    @huxleybennett4732 Před 3 měsíci +1

In answer to whether or not it even matters, I've asked myself the same question a lot and I think it absolutely does. The only real argument for why they shouldn't play hard (that I'm aware of) is that they risk injuring themselves for a game that doesn't matter. While the injury risk is real, there's an injury risk in every game and we obviously want players to play hard in actual games. Therefore the issue people actually have lies in the fact that the game doesn't matter - if it was game 7 of the finals we wouldn't care about the injury risk, of course players play hard, and the only real difference is the importance of the games.
So why is there a real difference in the importance? We largely weigh importance by how difficult something is to achieve/win - again, winning game 7 of the finals is more important than making the playoffs, which in turn is more important than winning some games, etc. If the players really competed out there, it'd be a lot harder to win the game or especially mvp. Really think about it. This is a game of only the best players in the whole world, and yet you come out on top with a great performance? That should be so impressive!
Essentially, it is a feedback loop. The less players play hard, the less impressive it becomes, meaning it becomes less valuable, and so the players care less and play hard less. The good news is that if this is the case then it should work in the opposite direction too. If we can find a way to make it matter more (it can even be artificial at first, e.g. a huge money prize for example), then a positive feedback loop will hopefully start. However we start this change, the players will start to try harder for it, which will make winning the game more impressive, which in turn makes it more valuable, and so players start to play harder. Eventually the argument of "they risk injuring themselves for a game that doesn't matter" just makes no sense, because it absolutely does matter, that shit is impressive!

They said they should give players incentives to do there job and get honored for it. lol. Pay them more money so they compete is crazy

Part of me feels like it is a selection bias. If you go into the events thinking something is going to be boring, it will be boring.

1v1 between the best in their respective positions could help them (backcourt and frontcourt). Imagine the top 8 guards went to a tournament type 1v1 where they only need to score first 6 or 7points, but handchecking is allowed.

They need to make a change where a winning team will have home court advantage in NBA Finals. Then you will see them care and compete.

Ive seen the Idea that whichever conference wins gets homecourt advantage in the finals get tossed around and that sounds like a good incentive for the all star game.

      Really like this idea

That a terrible idea. It would punish really good team for losing one insignificant game. A 65 win team not getting home court advantage in the finals because they lost the all star is just ridiculous.

New to Basketball here but wondering, could the structure for the All-Star game be a pickup format king of the court style where we get two 7 man rotations for each conference and they all face off in 10 minute formats, best team stays on and a new team comes in ? Could provide high level play as the goal is to stay on the court and still have nice rotations so players don't risk injuries. Would also remove risks of snubs. Again new to ball just curious of what could be meh about this type of format

I was talking in a previous comment about how the All-Stars used to be a way to show in and show out for the sport. To put the NBA out there, during a time where not many people knew what it was. Now that's change with highly decorated and well paid players not needing to prove much of anything. So why don't we take the AllStar games to an International scale.
    West vs Spain
    East vs Germany
It's a crazy thought but the NBA has outgrown the times were we can enjoy the competitive East versus West scenario.

In rugby league in Australia our “all star” game is state vs state and is as competitive as the finals because of the rivalry of the fans and teams

Honestly for rest reasons or whatever 3 point shoot out with pros out with nba or crossovers, and same with dunk. Then all star game and skills for nba players. Up the money for the all star game or some home court advantage

They need to add what they did in the cleb game all those little double points 4 point line on fire players that would make it fun
