Shark Attacks - Great White Shark, Bull Shark Roger Garletts, Petra Rijoes, Trevor Kalck, Kevin Bracey, Allan Countryman, Robert Bottini, Serame Sithole
This is God's truth. Before the movie Jaws in the late 60's we would go to Dayton beach and spend all day on those short rental rafts in water over our heads, riding the rafts and body surfing. I can remember standing at the surf's edge and with the lifeguards closing the beach to swimmers because there were sharks in the shallows. I can remember standing there watching their fins go around and around, thrashing back and forth and my only emotion was being pissed off because I couldn't get into the water. Never for a half a nano-second did it cross my mind that I would ever be bitten by a shark. After maybe after 30 min to an hour after the shark fins were no longer sighted, we'd all be back in the water past the breakers just happy as clams that we could get back out raft and body surfing. When I saw the opening scenes from Jaws, around the mid-seventies, I almost passed out and have never felt comfortable in salt water since.
every year there is a huge gathering of black tip reef sharks around daytona; the black tips gather for a migration of stingrays, and probably for mating. great whites and bull sharks arrive as well, they're there for the black tips.
For years my wife and I have spent a week in Destin Florida... I used to swim out to the dark water every year... Haven't sence sharks happen came out.... Lol.... Thx Hal!
I grew up on the Atlantic. Luckily never a bite... I'm one city N of New Smyrna Beach... Shark bite capital. Now, I have both knees totally replaced. The waves hitting my knees knock me over & it feels like a baseball bat, to the knees. We're now seeing big ole gators passing through the Atlantic. So, it's just cement ponds for this gal!!
There is a golf course in Australia which had documented bull sharks in the lake/water hazard with a documented size of 2.7 meters and that wasn’t the largest shark. They lived there for 17 years documented. Go check it out😉
Carbrook Golf club. The sharks were stranded after major flooding. What I like is the golf course adopted the sharks, they lived off the fish in the pond and people feeding them meat. The golf course changed their logo to be a shark, they have a junior sharks golf program. They capitalised on it for sure!

Another great video Hal. The tuna fisherman here was more fortunate than Mark Knittle in Hawaii and it's been about 15mo he went overboard hooking a tuna and nothing recovered as of yet.
That’s so unlucky. If it hit anywhere else you’d have a ridiculously more substantial chance at survival. Once it hits that femoral artery, it’s pretty much over for you. Would be an awful way to go because you get like a minute before you’re completely gone. 🤯
It is amazing that Peter Benchley wrote Jaws without knowing much about sharks. His book Shark Life tells how he came about to write Jaws and his adventures in scuba diving (after he wrote Jaws) -it is an edge of your seat must read!
If a bull shark is in brackish water, the lack of salt wouldn't make them dehydrated. The opposite would happen due to osmosis. However, bull sharks of all ages can osmoregulate so can tolerate any salinity. Research suggests that the limiting factor for adult bull sharks living in fresh water is availability of sufficient food. It is thought to be that which drives adolescent bulls out to sea. I don't know about how much food would be available in brackish water, though. I surmise it is dependent on the size of the river/estuary, local geology and topography, pollution levels, tides, season, and many other factors...

Nearly invisible corrosion will develop a very thin film on the battery posts. Had a car just die going down the interstate. Later a sister stopped by my house, shut her car off for a few minutes and it was stone dead. Both cases were that thin film crap but both were cured with a few minutes of steel brushing. There's more stories but a sudden loss of electrical ....check the battery posts.
Hi Hal, I met several South Africans in Hawaii back in the 80's. The were black and told me how great the beaches were in Hawaii which lead me to ask them about back in S.A. That's when I heard they only got to use the crappy beaches because they were black! Very uncool. They were members of a band called African Sunrise. All of them great guys. If any of you see this it's Mike from YWAM Honolulu! Hope you all are doing well🙋
They were probably telling you the truth, although I would be surprised if Petrus Sithole was swimming in dangerous waters because he was black, as the black swimming areas also generally had shark nets and barriers to keep sharks out. What probably happened is he thought the white section of Margate Beach was nicer for swimming than the black one, but wasn't allowed in the white swimming area, so he ended up swimming in between the two swimming areas where there was zero protection. Very sad case, and a good reason for anyone to rather stick to swimming in areas which are netted in, even if the netted in areas aren't so nice. Unfortunately many of South Africa's beaches (particularly on the east coast) are now not very nice at all, and you are quite liable to either find you are swimming in horrifically polluted water now, or are quite open to being mugged. EDIT: just putting this comment in, in case anyone is tempted to think the South African government of the time did not put shark nets or barriers in at black or non-white beaches.

I watched a documentary about a week ago apparently they say great White Sharks have been seen in England whether it's true not sure but I still wouldn't take a chance I live in Australia and I refuse to step foot in the water
I love the footage on this show, I’m always having to rewind and listen again because I’m paying more attention to the sharks on the screen. And that wall behind Hal too, I’d love to have that in one of my rooms. Great show visually as well as the straight forward and honest story telling. Addictive.
Fyi, Casino Beach aka Pensacola Beach is Bull shark central. And its so tempting to go out to the sandbars because the rays and turtles congregate there. Thanks Hal.
Let me first start by saying thank you for your show 💖 I have lived in Florida off and on my whole life since the 1970s started originally swimming on Jacksonville Beach as a child.. I will definitely agree with everybody who has been struck by a shark but not bitten as I was not bitten.. but I was slammed into two times in the space of about 20 seconds.. and at the time I was a larger person well over 200 lb and I was stuck in the mud up to my knees in the rivers leading to pine Island beach in spring Hill Florida and the second hit literally blasted me up out of the quick mud and I was able to get back into the boat and rescue... But it literally felt like I had been hit by a car going at at least 15 miles an hour.. and I have not been in the ocean since 😢 this happened to me well over 15 years ago and I still have the scars on my stomach and on my back....🦈 #1.... Human DEFINITELY #2. And the craziest part of all of this is bull sharks DNA is programmed to bump and bite and it did not bite me even though it's slammed into me two times!!!! I love sharks and I love all of Mother Nature's Creatures... But in the sea and in the brackish water which is where I was the sharks definitely rule.. us humans would be wise to not forget that!!!!
And I've even swam several times at New Smyrna Beach both as a child and an adult and never had so much as a brush that incident scared me so badly I have not been in the ocean in 10 years although I would love to go back I'm just terrified the next time the gods and goddesses of the sea are going to say we already told you not to be here LOL
I went to the Philippines on holiday with my girl and her parent's. A private resort, lovely beaches. Anyway i rented a canoe and was assured it was safe, nothing there that can harm you and didnt see any big fish. Anyway went to the bar that night and the barman (a local) told me their are definitely sharks and salt water crocs in that water. The person renting the canoes said there was nothing to worry about and couldnt take my cash fast enough. But the barman told me there is a reason no locals go into the water on that part of the beach. Boring story but when many of us are on holiday we see the ocean and how beautiful it is but have no idea what the hell is lurking out there. I am much more caution about getting in the water after hearing storys from that guy about missing locals who didnt come out of the water. Im pretty sure the local government's in places like that cover things up so as not to impact tourism and income.

Getting into the water off of the Eastern Cape coast is madness, especially at Port St John's. Its one of the few areas globally where the big 3 (Great white, tiger and bull sharks) frequent. Also has an unusually high fatality rate

Anytime you're being pulled on the surface, if there are any predators in the area, they will make a B-line for the disturbance on the surface, so you become a human lure/ plug.Another great show Hal.
@@elainepatterson5249 My buddy saw one in a swamp near his house. We tried to catch it. You can guess the rest. I was only 23 and still fearless. Spent 6 days in a hospital and that was the worst part for me, but the initial shock was pretty intense. The funny part is that those are so rare here that the hospital people didn't believe me even though my arm was swollen up to 2x it's normal size. They figured it out.
Hal, when I googled Serame Sithole I found the first article state that it was a 3M (10’) Great White based on the tooth fragments. Good info for you records. Thought it would have been bigger but 10 feet is plenty big enough
Thank you Hal for another episode. I've been told by so many that I shouldn't let my "fear" keep me from doing what I love......these people compare that driving a car has dangers. Yes it's true, but I know I am a very good driver, I drive defensively. In the ocean, I'm a good swimmer, but so much danger is unseen, under the water, and unknown currents and conditions. Swimming defensively is not even close to driving a car... a car accident is truly an accident.....being attacked and mauled/consumed by a shark is personal. IMO.

@@tonimartine7985 My body has a built in defense mechanism: when the dark goes for me, like an octopus or squid I shall release a cloud of something foul smelling and evil into the water, thereby totally making myself unappetising to the errant great white or bull shark. Unfortunately this does not work with tiger sharks, as they eat everything they can see.
Addicted to these videos! Found this channel a month ago now every sat & sun morning i watch 5-6 videos...i live close to ocean city maryland and always hear of great whites pinging off of assateague or Chincoteague but never seem to have many shark sightings though probaly hush hush due to tourist destination...my kids occasionally swim in the Chesapeake bay and im always nervous thinking about bull sharks...wonder what the odds actually are?...
Those Sharks are amazing jumping into the air they must be protected they are intelligent and people can stay out of the stupid shark cages and stop polluting the sea. 🦈

Great Whites may visit the UK waters. We have Mako and Blue sharks, and they can bite and do some damage.

I love sharks and I love all of Mother Nature's Creatures... But in the sea and in the brackish water which is where I was the sharks definitely rule.. us humans would be wise to not forget that!!!!
Those hits can break bones…. I just never thought about that part of it as much as the teeth
And I've even swam several times at New Smyrna Beach both as a child and an adult and never had so much as a brush that incident scared me so badly I have not been in the ocean in 10 years although I would love to go back I'm just terrified the next time the gods and goddesses of the sea are going to say we already told you not to be here LOL

I went to the Philippines on holiday with my girl and her parent's. A private resort, lovely beaches. Anyway i rented a canoe and was assured it was safe, nothing there that can harm you and didnt see any big fish. Anyway went to the bar that night and the barman (a local) told me their are definitely sharks and salt water crocs in that water. The person renting the canoes said there was nothing to worry about and couldnt take my cash fast enough. But the barman told me there is a reason no locals go into the water on that part of the beach. Boring story but when many of us are on holiday we see the ocean and how beautiful it is but have no idea what the hell is lurking out there. I am much more caution about getting in the water after hearing storys from that guy about missing locals who didnt come out of the water. Im pretty sure the local government's in places like that cover things up so as not to impact tourism and income.

I think I know the video of the hammerhead chasing something swimming to that guy to try and use him as cover that you're talking about. The description of Petra Rijoes wounds do make it sound like the shark bit her while the tube she was on was still in motion.

Getting into the water off of the Eastern Cape coast is madness, especially at Port St John's. Its one of the few areas globally where the big 3 (Great white, tiger and bull sharks) frequent. Also has an unusually high fatality rate

Anytime you're being pulled on the surface, if there are any predators in the area, they will make a B-line for the disturbance on the surface, so you become a human lure/ plug.Another great show Hal.

@@elainepatterson5249 My buddy saw one in a swamp near his house. We tried to catch it. You can guess the rest. I was only 23 and still fearless. Spent 6 days in a hospital and that was the worst part for me, but the initial shock was pretty intense. The funny part is that those are so rare here that the hospital people didn't believe me even though my arm was swollen up to 2x it's normal size. They figured it out.

Hal, when I googled Serame Sithole I found the first article state that it was a 3M (10’) Great White based on the tooth fragments. Good info for you records. Thought it would have been bigger but 10 feet is plenty big enough

Thank you Hal for another episode. I've been told by so many that I shouldn't let my "fear" keep me from doing what I love......these people compare that driving a car has dangers. Yes it's true, but I know I am a very good driver, I drive defensively. In the ocean, I'm a good swimmer, but so much danger is unseen, under the water, and unknown currents and conditions. Swimming defensively is not even close to driving a car... a car accident is truly an accident.....being attacked and mauled/consumed by a shark is personal. IMO.

@@tonimartine7985 My body has a built in defense mechanism: when the dark goes for me, like an octopus or squid I shall release a cloud of something foul smelling and evil into the water, thereby totally making myself unappetising to the errant great white or bull shark. Unfortunately this does not work with tiger sharks, as they eat everything they can see.

Found this channel a month ago now every sat & sun morning i watch 5-6 videos...i live close to ocean city maryland and always hear of great whites pinging off of assateague or Chincoteague but never seem to have many shark sightings though probaly hush hush due to tourist destination...my kids occasionally swim in the Chesapeake bay and im always nervous thinking about bull sharks...wonder what the odds actually are?...
Those Sharks are amazing jumping into the air they must be protected they are intelligent and people can stay out of the stupid shark cages and stop polluting the sea. 🦈

It's not the Charter boats fault he caught a shark big enough to pull him off of the boat into the water and that the shark on his line bit him. That's what's called BAD LUCK !!.
That's sucks about the guy being outside the shark barrier.
