When you said "11' mako sitting there things are not going to go well for him;" I confess I chuckled.
When my twin daughters were 12, we had a family trip to Hawaii. They wanted to learn to surf, so I contacted a surf school and off we set with a class. They were so far out at this beach to catch where the waves break, that I couldn’t even see them. If I had known then what I’ve learned from your channel, they would still be begging me to let them go!
Same in the Caribbean with me. On vacation I would enjoy a daily morning swim out to a marker bouy from the beach. The resort staff would insist that there were NO sharks in those waters. They would say that because they don't want to scare the tourists off. I learned THAT from this channel. Now I never trust what people in the tourism industry say.👍
@@TheScaryTruthCatalyst as kids taking a quick swim not knowing we had three small great whites swimming around us/we were picked up by a guy with a small sail boat. We told him we'd swim back. He told us that great whites come in the area during the baby birthing whales. After getting in the small boat we noticed my smaller sister had blood on her back. She said something bumped her. When we found our folks a few fellas had told that the kids out there were lucky to be alive. We got in a bit of trouble since we were sight seeing that day...not swimming.
We used to take our kids (elementary aged) snorkeling quite a ways off of the Keys and never thought much if it. Why? Because the snorkeling company said they don’t have sharks in that area, and we foolishly believed it. Thankfully we never saw anything very scary, but I surely wouldn’t repeat that nowadays.
Yep. Vacationed recently in the Fl Keys. Key West island. Went snorkeling for a few days, got deeper and deeper into the water. Late one eve, having a beer and browsing on my laptop I read about the attacks in that area over the last few years. Not all fatal but enough to make me not go back in.

The attack at Puamana in 1980 was out in front of the Puamana pool, and is just a couple miles north of Olawalu where the woman was attacked and eaten by a Tiger shark a little over ten years later. The reef at Puamana is shallow out to the surf break, about 30/40 yards from shore as you mentioned, and then drops off to deeper water.
You know Polynesians believe sharks are their ancestors. They swim and stroke them and put them in a trance like state. Very interesting. Tigers are very friendly sometimes. You've got to behave like a predator toward them, not prey.

Lots of surfers are taken around Hawaii but they keep it quiet. Its reported as missing presumed drowned.Its the Tigers. I was working on a house near the beach in Kailua in 2010 and we saw a 12ft Tiger about 20ft from some rocks biting 3 turtles in half just for fun and then swimming off.A couple of years later a swimmer had their leg bitten off just around the bend at Lanikai and I wasn't surprised.That beach gets real busy with kids every weekend.
I’ve commented before about the December 1996 incident in Maui, Kaanapali woman swims with dolphins every morning with an orange ball, one minute she was there the next gone. Never heard anything ever about her, she is classified a missing person…. But her orange ball was found and there was an eyewitness. Tourism safety is at risk.

Not weird at all. I save Hals videos for when I'm at my most relaxed and have time. Its like reading a favorite book. Ive seen every episode multiple times, been a fan since day one.
Your shows are great because they show people just how unpredictable these animals can be. Most people will never even SEE a shark, let alone be attacked by one, but it pays to always be aware of what's around you in the water. We are not on their usual menus, and they will usually keep their distance from people. But, these shows of yours give us things to watch out for, or not do certain behaviors or actions in the water that would bring us to a nearby shark's attention, and possibly an exploratory bite. We are responsible for our personal safety when swimming in the ocean, and knowing about how we act can mean the difference between a great vacation, or a terrible tragedy. These shows of yours show us how to stay safe. Thanks!

I moved to the coast of NC and was looking forward to kayaking. Then I met some locals and learned the truth about sharks. I also learned how the press lies about shark attacks because tourism was the number one industry. Swimming in salt water is EXACTLY like taking a hike alone in the jungle. Not for me.
I live about an hour and a half inland in between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach and we go to both places every summer to enjoy the beaches and I never understand how people let their kids swim so far out when previous years we’ve had attacks so close to shore. And all the people that still swim near piers where people are fishing…..not the smartest thing to do.
Hal , the Midnight Lump where Kurt Bickel had his lucky day is not near Mexico , unless it moved . It is off the Louisiana coast ,approximately 38 miles out. It's in the Gulf of Mexico but nowhere near Mexico. It's a great spot for Yellowfin in the fall /winter. The Lump is basically a bump underwater, it's the top of a salt dome the seafloor goes from 400 -600 feet to 200 feet, there's an upwelling of nutrients and going from deep to relatively shallow it attracts fish ,especially when the mullet migrate from inshore to offshore , all of the predators come to feast.
I have followed your show for over a year and never miss a episode. I even have my roommate watching now. We both are still wondering why do people go into water. Living in Tucson,Arizona makes me feel safe I will never be attacked by a shark
I now have my whole family sitting with me to watch his uploads as they are released :) We live 2 blocks from the sand & surf here in Daytona, we have all went into the ocean to swim & body surf,, BUT since finding & watching this channel, we all think very differently now about going in,, we have a much higher respect now and are ok with keeping our distance and leaving them alone, we still go in, but are very aware that we are in their territory and they don't want/need us there,, no more deep ocean water for us :) we are cool with sticking close to shore and staying out of their way :)

As my elementary school associate Jimmy Keung said numerous times the Mako shark is the fastest shark. So that must of been quite the ordeal

I used to live and surf on Maui and Kauai. Never saw sharks on Kauai (but knew they were there). My two favorite surf spots on Kauai were known to be very sharky. One of the spots was where Bethany Hamilton lost her arm to a Tiger shark. Saw lots of sharks on Maui though while surfing and windsurfing. I surfed Paumana one afternoon and we had a 14’ Tiger cruise through the lineup.
Curious? Can you still stealth camp on Kauai? I want to spend the Summer, snorkeling,diving! Somewhere safe& warm crystal clear waters! I know Kauai is a bit safer than Caribbean ! Any thoughts? Ty

I’ve always thought that bodyboarders in Hawaii and other places that have a lot of tigers are more at risk. They would look more like a turtle than anything else and tigers love turtles!

I used to live in Florida and eventually I moved to California. I thought I might get into surfing a bit. I knew that Florida and California had around the same number of shark attacks per year. On a given weekend in Florida you may have half a million people wading in the ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. When I got to California I discovered that the number of people swimming was around zero. This basically means every person who goes in the water gets attacked eventually. I do not go in the ocean in California.
Really? I rarely hear of shark attacks in California but I hear them about Florida and the Carolinas.
@@ToilaCarissa There are more minor injuries from small sharks in Florida and the Carolinas, like people accidently step on them or whatever an get bitten, but the fatality number is around the same. I would say there are at least 1,000X the number of people in the water in those states than California. People go to the beach but they mostly just stay at the shoreline because the water is so cold. Even boating you see hardly any recreational boats going out in San Francisco Bay for example.

I agree the teeth and action is so swift and clean cut pain doesn't even register til after the fact then it has to be like your whole body goes into shock.
Like a sharp knife - you cut yourself without even realising it, the teeth are so sharp you don't notice at first.

Love the show. Absolute favourites when you rant about the lies going on and when you get to laughing.
The dive board sounds sketchy and probably leaks blood?! After my encounter with a shark with fish blood in the water, I modernized my technique with a galvanized wash tub and a car inner tube with a poly line anchoring system to a 3 pound lead weight for an anchor. Using scuba gear I was spearing the parrot fish and placing those along with a couple of lobsters quickly to the surface fearing the fish blood in the water all the time even though the wash tub contained it. That night was a very strong off shore wind with a setting quarter phase moon into the West, and that is the best moon for lobster fishing as they use the darkness to march and are out in the open on the reef. I speared one last parrot fish and was nearly out of air but only working in 35 foot deep water.... no biggie! When I surfaced to discover my catch bucket was missing since the strong wind caused my poly line to chafe on the reef and break free. So here I am with a bleeding parrot fish on my sling and no bucket to put it in?!! As I searched in the setting moon light I now spotted my gear blown well of shore and that appeared to be a couple of hundred yards out now. I didn't want to lose my gear and catch so I put a small amount of air in my buoyancy control vest, flipped over on my back with the fish on the spear out of the water and headed out into the setting moonlight and my floating bucket of blood!! lol by the time I reached it I was now 600 yards off shore. However, being a strong swimmer I managed to swim on the surface towing my fish and blood containment system through the 30-40 mph off shore wind back to safety. Fatigued I considered jettisoning my dive gear and catch but perseverance prevailed. More "what were you thinking" events to follow!🙏🤷🏻
I am exhausted just reading this. Swimming is exhausting, that is lakes with no waves/current. I would collapse from exhaustion.
3 shark attacks in the Recife area in Brazil in the spam of 2 weeks. The 2 last ones happened on Sunday and today (Monday) 1km apart. If you can, make a video about that.

The first 1 in Australia Tiger sharks are very well know to be present in waters and throughout the great barrier reef. I used to live in NQ. The bay in Townsville is a breeding ground for were tiger sharks stick the baby egg sacks in the kelp. We were always cautious of sharks in NQ as well as Box gelly fish.

I can't imagine the horror of being wrecked at sea and floating around in the ocean for days with sharks swimming around you and you're wondering when the bite will come. Like in the movie The Reef. Holy God I'd rather someone just put a bullet in my head.

Another good show! I don't often pause the screen on the newspaper clippings, but it did say that that swimmer was later surrounded by her husband and the other swimmers which the shark did not try to attack them directly. It says a helicopter dropped dye into the water to read the tide but the following morning police officers found some of her remains washed up on shore. Great shows, Hal, keep it up! I wonder how many lives this channel has saved by you bringing awareness of shark attacks, brother! 💝🦈 I appreciate your passion for sharks and people when you tell these stories.

I never want to learn to scuba dive, or do ANY type of open ocean swimming. But I’ve been a water lover since I could walk, due to the number of family vacations to FL, Hawaii, western Mexico, and the Caribbean. If I go to a beach, I’m in the water. I’ve lived on the upper Texas coast for over 40 years (nasty murky water and nasty brown sand beaches, so you can’t even see your feet in 3-4’ of water) and I know it’s bull shark heaven, but I can’t stop myself. There’s always that little bit of fear, but the sheer joy of being in the water pushes it out of my head🤷♀️
Sounds like Galveston! I live here! The homes are eye candy& people so friendly compared to New Yorkers,like myself! Mississippi River dumps the silt,sludge into the Gulf! And the oil tankers off shore! Refineries etc! How bout that Sargasso? LOL 🏖️Oh, yes & the Bull Sharks! My friend docks at the Marina here! Says you wouldn't stick your big toe in the water if you saw the size of the Bulls that feed off the boat sewage😳

When I lived in Southport NC, a Great White named Mary Lee was pinging all around NC and SC. At that time she was 14 ft. Not sure if her tracking device is still attached. No, I didn’t get in the ocean. 😀 But I do love sharks. 🦈

I live near Tahtra and dive there often, the wharf was famous for its shark fishing before the Council banned it in the early 90’s.
The water here is quite deep, close to 12m only metres off the shore, seals are common there too, as are rays and fish carcasses from the folk fishing on the wharf. They had the annual ‘wharf to waves’ swim only recently.

You & 1 other channel stops me on my tracks. Must watch it now! The other channels I mark to watch later...after my shower & my pajamas are on & I'm snuggled up. If Sharks Happen drops at this point, my chihuahuas & I watch together. Makes your channel 10x's better when we can snuggle up together with a snack & a hot cup of coffee topped with whipped cream & cinnamon (sometimes a shot of Jagermeister cold brew in it).

The reason people don't feel the teeth when the just have pressure is that nerves can only carry one type of painful sensation, so the pressure blocks the other sensations out.
It's one of the clever tricks in medicine and nursing to pinch the skin around an injection site, the patient just feels a squeeze.
I was always the Nurse they wanted to have for their injections on the ward. The human body is fascinating.
Very cold water can do the same.
My partner has 2x injections every day, he's a former Nurse, too and the Nurses who do his use that method. Amazing.
We have Midnight Lumps and they are out of Venice,la in WD 174 I believe. The surrounding water is 400' and the lumps rise up to around 200'. Amazing tuna fishing and HUGE mako's.

The Linda Mar Beach attack surprisingly didn't injure the spear fisher, only the swim fin was bitten off. Many of California's shark attacks have been attributed to the Great White Shark, especially in the Red Triangle. Here's a recap of fatal attacks in that region you covered, not including the Alcatraz escape.

You did cover the largest non-fatal attack on Jack Rochette in that region. The white shark you mentioned in that one was 7 to 8 meters (22 to 26 feet) long. Had shark gone for the meatier areas of Rochette, he would have been done.

Why would you swim such a distance in the sea. I'm a fisherman and I know if you drag a lure on the surface something is gonna hit it. It's exactly what you're doing swimming on the surface. The Mozambique attacks were 3 if I remember correctly. Woman got attacked in the buttocks and died in hospital and then later another fisherman actually lost both arms.
I lived in Honolulu when I was younger, I went in all the time, not a chance now

regarding the spear fishing attack, the floats are used to slow & tire the fish out so it can't go too deep. There's a few spear fishing channels I watch out of Fla on YT and I've seen them used a few times.
