Loved this episode! Lived in the Keys, MM 14, Saddlebunch, between Sugarloaf Big Coppit. Living down there is a trip. Miss the inky black night sky FILLED with stars, and the, yes truly, turquoise green blue water...when the sun shines, almost always, it is like diamonds. Truly lovely. Living there... civilization is hours away. By the way, USED to love the water, snorkeling was fabulous. Until the time I came face to face with a shark down in Ramrod. Thinking a tiger or a bull... Walked on water back to the boat. Have NOT been in the water since... it's been over 15 years ago. Love your channel!

Hi! First vid of yours I have seen. Thank you for doing all this. The Heather Boswell story. I remember it well. She is my age and I connected in that regard with her story.
I have always thought " why did they shoot the shark?" I also saw no people in the water. She was the last one to get out. Yes, it's sad. All the way round. I believe the guy who shot didnt get prosecuted due to they were in the middle of the ocean. What country will choose to address it? People can get away with a lot on the international waters then they can on land for sure. Anyways thank you for bringing knowledge to the tube.

When I was about fourteen, I was swimming in the gulf coast by some jetties, maybe around 70 yards out. Waves hitting the jetties were kicking up sand, no visibility at all.
A few things happened all at once. I got hit in the thigh with what felt like a baseball bat, two fins, dorsal and tail thrash above the surface feet away for an instant, and my buddy on shore screaming for me to get out of the water.
I hauled ass to the jetty, thank God it was near. Would have been a long swim back to the beach. No bites, just a big nasty bruise.
Never got a good look at it, happened fast. It was a shade of gray-brown that I've seen on a number of different shark species. I would guess four or five feet from the distance between the fins.

@@dingosiccunt2297 well spearfishing seems okay enough, they seem to mainly just attack without feeding! So a few bites at most. If you get unlucky, even with a suit and metal helmet for saturation diving, we've seen sharks can try and just pop your head off, so I guess even territorial incidents can be instant funerals, if they get the head...
That said, you seem to be safer than swimmers and surfers, who for some reason seem to be fed on more often..? I guess maybe the big 3 are used to eating mainly in the shallow, instead of out deep where you go spearfishing?
On the other hand, I guess it kinda is like lightning, you can mitigate the risk a bit, but in the end, if it really wants to, and has decided you are the target, there really is nothing you can do at that point if you can't immediately escape the water!
I feel like few incidents happen at the bottom, right? So technically, for divers, if they are afraid or there are sharks around, couldn't a cage be lowered down, they enter, and then they could be pulled up safely from the bottom, so they didn't have to actively be a target, especially if they have fish, as most sharks get you in the open or closer to the surface!

I find it outrageous this group call themselves researchers and then kill without cause an animal functioning in its domain the only way they know. SHAME ON THEM, and SHAME ON ENFORCEMENT that is selective and subjective. NOT GOOD and its how you lose compliance and respect of the majority of citizens.

That incident when the guy shot the shark, reminded me when I saw that happen. I was on a drift fishing boat, near Palm Beach Fla. I was there on vacation, from Ill., near Lake Michigan. And someone caught a shark, which was near the surface, and going back and forth, at a fast pace. The captain came out, and shot the shark, with his pistol ! They then let it go, cutting the line. This was in about 1967. I thought that was the normal thing to do, when that happened. I never saw that again, or heard about that happening.

We wound up on the beach at Key West at sunrise, sleeping on the sand till 10 am (trying NOT to look like homeless drug dealers the cops were not-so-covertly spying on with binoculars from huge SUV's parked behind palm bushes)... So, then we decided to head out, down Alligator Alley on the way home to Treasure Island...

Yes. It is an intriguing subject as to the GW's behavior in the open sea vs. near shore. Amazingly, from what I have read, this 16 ft. animal did not display great ferocity toward Heather. Yes she definitely would have bled out if she didn’t have a literal mini hospital right there. I think they even mentioned that the nurses couldn’t get a vein she was very close to death.

Great new video, Hal. Thanks alot. The gulf stories, as well as the billfold under arm video were hilarious. As you said before, we are both around the same age, and you probably have the issue that I have, having partied too hard, for years, years ago. Common with musicians. Lol

I was stationed on a ship years ago and when we had swim calls we were spread out on both sides of the ship so it is possible that there were swimmers you could not see.

No it is not. Every account has her 25 yards further out and the unedited vid shows that shark cutting her off from the skiff long before finally approaching and biting. No way people stay in the water with a shark. So, 25 yard headstart on a woman that almost made it and you think people are still in the water. And then spin to explain the NOAA report of multiple people in the water when shots first fired… on Heathers side of the boat as he killed the shark on tge backside of it. I would have loved to have you as my parent growin up. Instead i had my dad that didnt but bs like this nonsense being pushed. Reasons there is no uncut vid out any longer

I too remember seeing a video that was filmed from the ship with “aerial” view. Shark was moving slowly as it chomped on her ankle. I also recall that guy in inflatable boat had her under her arms& had tug of war with shark before he could pull her onto boat. Very strange that that video isn’t shown.

Hi Hal I'm just curious on how you know so much about sharks? Reading books? Or stories of people being attacked? You have such good insight , seems sometimes more then so called experts, an how long have you studied them? Just curious. Love your show!

    • @SharksHappen
      @SharksHappen  Před rokem +28

Books, attack reports, been into attacks since about 84. Stopped late 90s and was shocked what is being said about attacks. Seems there are 2 extremes, the Final Affliction extreme dramatizing attacks with total lies in their titles, then the shark research community in the other end. Truth is in the middle of both

@@SharksHappenI know one thing. We'll always get the truth on this channel. Thanks for your wonderful videos on what is a pretty gruesome subject. Certainly some pretty gruesome and heartbreaking stories. Told with compassion, along with the factual parts of each incident. Thanks for all you do in bringing us the real story. I first became interested in the subject after getting a book about Shark attacks, and when I started reading it, the first bit that I can remember that really grabbed my attention, was the pictures and description of the attack on Rodney Fox. I can't remember what book it was, what it was called etc, but I know it was a fairly old book. From the 1970's or early 1980's I think??.

Hal, I binged half dozen comedy specials, this weekend, and got a few good chuckles. I then decided to see what was happening in the shark world and, your golf & restaurant stories had me laughing so hard that I think I hurt myself. I should've just bindged your channel. Noted. Relatively new subscriber and love your channel. Curious how a guy from MI is so interested in sharks. I'm landlocked also and have been interested since watching JAWS as an 8 year old (it was the 70s) so I get it.
