I always would go for the larger screen. I know Apple is a great display, but for my personal use I do not need anything more than 60Hz as I do not game on my computers. I would like the M8 had a bit more brightness. Speakers are adequate for a TV but on my MacBook I will always either use the MacBook speakers or headphones. Now, the biggest driver for the M8 is the price and it totally wins. The display should be IPS for sure, VA... is good for gaming when you sit in front of it.

I think the two displays are going after different markets. The pixel density on the Samsung monitor will not convert anyone who wants a very sharp display regardless of its price. That is the Studio’s main selling point (5K, 218 PPI). Those who like having a bigger screen and don’t care about pixel density will be happy with the Samsung. I don’t think anyone who would buy a Samsung would really buy the Apple monitor and vice versa. They are just different animals and really aren’t comparable.
For me, I ended up finally giving in and getting a Studio Display because I have bad eyes after undergoing retina and cataract surgery. I need that sharpness, which my other monitors can’t match (I also have an LG 38” ultrawide and Samsung Odyssey G9 with about half the pixel density). If I need to read text, I’ll move whatever app I need to the Studio Display. The Samsung TV features are cool, but I’d rather have my actual Samsung 65” TV.

I really tried to buy the Samsung to use with a Studio. When I went into Best Buy to buy it they had an open box Studio Display and I bought both planning on probably returning the Apple. When I had them both up and I was comparing them my wife walked in and asked what was wrong with the Samsung. No amount of tweaking could make it look anywhere close to the Apple so I ended up spending far more than I wanted to by returning the Samsung. It's just a color and PPI thing but the Apple looked $800 better to me and I knew I'd regret it if I kept the Samsung.

What I don’t understand is why it is so difficult for all companies to make simple looking, elegant monitors like this? LG for instance and their weird claw like stand and thick bottom bezels? The aluminium iMac has been around for nearly 15 years, yet other companies still struggle to make simple, elegant looking monitors?

I don't understand comparing a 4k 32" VA monitor with a 5k 28" IPS monitor - they are really different screens. Might as well compare the Apple studio display against a 24" 240Hz VA gaming monitor.
The studio display is for people that want a lot of quality: more pixels, more color, more nits - premium everything. The LG Ultrafine is mentioned multiple times here - and that is because it is a much closer monitor for the reasons someone would buy the Apple Studio Display.

I presently DO use a Samsung 49" 4K display and an old Thunderbolt Monitor for my second display. This is a lot of screen real estate and it is really nice for music production jobs. Generally, I am interested in such panel sizes - my eyes are not the best, so the larger screens seem to help me get my stuff done in comfort. Great review!!

I tried to set one up when it was delivered yesterday. I don't need a 'smart' monitor. You have to update it with software updates. It uses AirPlay to communicate with the Mac. No Displayport. It comes with HDMI to mini-HDMI cable... how many Macs have that? Wireless? Isn't your Mac already wireless? Why do you also need a wireless monitor? No manuals in the box. I contacted Samsung Product Support and chatted the technician for a link to download the manuals. The Product Support Technician said I would have to contact a Technical Support Technician for that technical kind of information. If you buy this monitor you have to join the Samsung Ecosphere. And the display is full of bloatware such as Bixby and steaming subscriptions and game trials, etc., etc., etc. Samsung must be making a fortune from all the $$$ they're paid to promote the bloatware.

Well, before 9:37, I literally thought Samsung M8, with such a clean look and thoughtful designs, was a much better deal compared to the Apple Studio Display. But then, when they are both turned on and placed side by side, the gap is apparently quite huge. I got to say M8 is an excellent product with an appealing price as long as it is not placed by the side of the Apple Studio Display while turned on.

I will definitely go with the M8. You can save $900 and get an M1 Macbook Air (or even M2) paired with it. And Samsung M8 comes with a free adjustable stand as opposed to Apple's $400 iStand. What a ripoff! 😆

Yeah we saw what a rip off it is lol when they turned them on side by side. Studi display is from another universe compared to the m8.

I have a Samsung M8 - got it about a month ago - I like it but it seems to turn itself off when my Mac mini goes to sleep instead to sleeping also. I tried another cable but it made no difference. I use it as a monitor for my Mac mini and rarely watch tv on it. I would have loved a studio display but just couldn't pay that much for a monitor (no matter how good it is!) also I wanted to try the extra large size - which I love (coming from 21.5 in iMac!) Thanks for the video.

What about music production with the M8 and using video. If your have speakers for sound, will the M8 be ok or get the studio display. I like the larger screen. I know there are larger screens but $$$$ is there.

This is my second question and you didn’t answer my first question about using the M8 for music production. Can you please reread what I asked. I know you assess in demand, but would appreciate any answer from you, sir.

As a graphic designer, primarily dealing with print, the Apple display is definitely worth the upcharge for the image quality and color accuracy.

It is not ideal to use 4K with a mac due to OS-level scaling. If you use mac, either use 1440 or 5K display. Only then, it will scale perfectly.

Yeah the picture is gonna look blurry and stuff will be slower especially for design work. Not even an option for me, unless you’re using windows

I have a Mac with a 4K display and another Mac with a 5K display. If you know what you are doing, they both can be set to scale perfectly. I’m guessing you don’t know what you are doing.

Is there a 24 inch version?

Hey max, a comparison between studio display and dell "IPS black" monitor will be great.
