No sooner has the era of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi drawn to an end, with their unprecedented hold on the Ballon d’Or now finally released, than a new duopoly appears to have emerged, set to dominate football for years to come.
But is it the same: Can Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe really be the new Messi and Ronaldo?

What differentiates Messi and Ronaldo from the rest of the great players is their longevity and consistency. Being the best in the world for over 15 years is commendable. I feel Haaland and Mbappe are great players and currently the best, but for them to reach the levels of Messi and Ronaldo, they need to show this consistency for the next 10 years.

I don't know about them being "the new Messi and Ronaldo." I get that they're both elite tier in their positions and easily comparable, but there were several factors that made Messi vs Ronaldo so exciting:
    1. Easily #1 reason that made Messi vs Ronaldo exciting was the fact that while they both were extremely productive in terms of goals and direct assists, they also had very different playing styles in order to achieve them. Always interesting to see the results of different styles (Winger/False 9/Central Roaming/playmaking/dribbling vs Winger/Striker/"fox in the box"/tall/extremely athletic). On the other hand, Mbappe and Haaland, while differing somewhat, are at the end of the day both athletic strikers/poaching forwards that drift wide here and there.
    2. Messi and Ronaldo played in a club rivalry and not just any, but arguably the most famous club rivalry in FCB vs Real Madrid. PSG vs Man City has never been a historic or even contemporary rivalry. This can, of course, change in the future if Haaland and Mbappe move clubs but for now this is how it stands
    3. The overal skill-set of Messi and Ronaldo, so far, haven't been displayed by Haaland and Mbappe. Neither Mbappe nor Haaland have the free kick abilities of Messi/Ronaldo. They also don't have as elite of dribbling ability of Messi/Young Ronaldo (although Mbappe is pretty great on the ball in fast attacking situations to his credit). Neither of them can match Cristiano's overall prime athleticism and neither of them can even touch Messi's playmaking.
    4. It doesn't really matter where you stand in Messi vs Ronaldo in terms of who's a better player. There's no denying in terms of pure career achievement, they are both equal. You can easily make the case for either. Comparable # of UCL+league titles, comparable # of national titles, comparable # of individual titles, etc, regardless of who you think was the "better player." We'll have to see if Mbappe vs Haaland will also showcase this back-and-forth winning of collective/individual trophies or if one will win more trophies by a landslide than the other

One thing I find hard to match when it comes to Messi and Ronaldo rivalry is their difference in style. Messi likes to construct to himself and his teammates far away from goal, while Ronaldo prefers to have the ball delivered to him when he's close to the goal; Messi favorite way of scoring is by letting the opposing run to the defense while he comes from behind in direction of goal, Ronaldo's is to be close to it, let the opposition gets close to it the goal and then and distance himself from the goal to score; Messi atracts pressure, while Ronaldo get rid of it....

! However, let's not forget that Ronaldo only has a low start of the season. People tend to forget the way he carried United last year! Messi had an under standard season with PSG last year top to bottom! Yes, everyone sung his retirement song last year on all social media platforms, and now he is showing he is not finished yet! Coming back to CR7, if there is one player that can turn this around, that is him! Too much hate on both of these players, and regardless if you are a Barca❀ fan, or a Madrid fan, or a football fan as matter of fact, we should all be grateful that we were lucky enough to witness the greatness of the 2 giants! true, messi and ronaldo had huge factors in making them so popular. it is without a doubt that messi is a better footballer, but ronaldo was the showy flashy player right from his bolton debut. messi is football personified, he is so complete. people wouldve known from day one that he would become the greatest if not for injuries and poor mentality. in the case of ronaldo, he was raw initially but he had that flair. he developed his own unique style of running and revolutionised the role of a winger in english football. his fancy flicks, special knuckleball free kick technique, that free kick stance and so on had a huge effect on the young english audience. he had a swagger about him which appealed him to the fans. then he went on to join madrid and so both of them found each other on the opposite fence of the most intense club rivalry. everything went right in this rivalry. both were remarkably different yet being hardworking talented and extremely focused. one was quite and non-reactive while the other was loud pompous. having one person being arrogant and cocky really helps grow a rivalry. i dont see that with haaland and mbappe, and they need to be in the same league for a rivalry to truly develop

The thing with CR7 and Messi is they did symbolize a new era for football born at the end of the 2000'. A football with longer careers and more goals and games.
What Messi and CR7 did, some players already did it in my opinion : Ronaldo, Van Basten, Maradonna, Platini, Di Baggio, etc. but they were living during eras were careers were shorter. Almost all of them got injured severly during their golden age.
To give an example, when Zidane played the 2006 world cup at the age of 34 y.o., people were amazed by his level for his age, it was exceptional for the standards of that time but today, half the superstars have their best years around that age (Benzema, Modric, Lewandowski, etc.).
Also, just look at the ranking of strikers. During the 90' and 2000', the best scorers were rarely above 30 goals per year. Today, there are some kids who can reach that mark mid-season.
For example, in 2004/2005, the top scorer was Thierry Henry with 30 goals. When Messi beat the record with 73 goals in 2011/2012, there were 11 others players who reach the 30 goals mark. So except if you think that Soldado, Gomis or Nene are better strikers than Thierry Henry, Shevchenko, Etoo or Ronaldo, the most reasonable conclusion is simply that football changed during that period, with more and more goals each year and, in my opinion, a polarisation of it toward the strikers (In 2011, Messi scored 38,5% of Barca's goals while in 2005, Henry only scored 25% of Arsenal's goals).

    1. Longevity: Staying injury free and in top class shape for close to 15 years is extremely difficult and requires monumental amount of will power and work ethic.
    2. Scoring nearly 50 goals season after season is very difficult and does not happen often in an entire generation. Although the goal rate of both Haaland and Mbappe is mesmerising, but to stay in that form for 15 years will be insanely challenging.

It's no coincidence the top 3 European goalscorers of all time are all currently still playing. 30 years from now there'll be a good handful of players with over 100 CL goals. Yes, Messi and Ronaldo are greats, but this is also down to changes in the modern game and the prestige of the competition. Haaland and Mbappe are well on course to 125+ goals even if they retire at 31.

Putting playstyles and context aside, I think it's fair to say both Messi and Ronaldo were consummate professionals that had a massive winning drive and a mature stance towards their profession. Mbappe on the other hand seems to be more of a primadonna social media influencer, which will probably be the main obstacle to a similar rivalry occurring, as he won't be supported as a person by anyone aside from teenagers who think bad manners are cool.

I don't think so. All are great players. But IMO one of the things that has always set Messi and Ronaldo apart is how fair they play on the pitch. Very rare that either one of them behaves in an un-sportsmanlike manner. I also have to admire their concentration, and focus.
I've seen Haaland and Mbappe in many games; and seen them do things that I have never seen Messi/Ronaldo do.
There is some intangible, that we as fans can only surmise. But it's a feeling. Lewandowski broke all kinds of records at Bayern, but the fanbase didn't warm, to him. My point is, that in order to go down as a truly great, you also have to be loved.
