    I used to work at an airport as a cashier. Every so often, some old folks would pay with two-dollar bills and try telling me that they are rare. It got to the point where I didn't feel like arguing with them or correcting them, so I just let them go on about their day thinking that they wowed me by paying with two-dollar bills.

    Am I high or did this guy just get ripped off? He wanted $100 worth of $2 bills, the teller counted them at face value (2, 4 , 6, 8) until he got to 50...that is only $50 dollars right? He would need 50 individual $2 dollar bills to equal $100 right? If you count each bill he lays down he gives this guy 25 individual bills. That's only 50 dollars. Someone back me up here lol

    • @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary
      @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary  Před 6 lety +76

      You're not high, but if you notice when the count gets to 38, we cut to a close up of Steve's face. This is the only edit made during this transaction. The teller actually counted out two sets of $50, but we used the repetition of him counting each set out to make an edit so it seemed like he only counted out one set. There was no reason to subject the audience to having to watch him count out twice as many bills (the point that the bank had $2 bills was made), so we did what's called a "pull up" in editing lingo and smoothly shortened the transaction some. Nice catch though! That hadn't been brought to our attention yet, and we didn't realize this loss of logic until you pointed it out. Kudos.

    Sometimes it’s best to call ahead and make that arrangement since 9 times out of ten (at my bank) they literally have to walk from teller to teller to gather up what you need. Call ahead and they can order them for you and they’re typically pristine and sequential. Cheers Bill

    I’m in the UK, and occasionally you can find American money (both coins and bills) in coinstar machines, either lying around the coin feed or in the rejected coins slot - I found a $2 bill there once - someone had tried rolling it up and trying to jam it into the coin feed. I’ve still got it somewhere, I think it’s in an old wallet up in the loft.

  • @shonuf1
    @shonuf1 Před 4 lety +4

    According to my experience, $2000 is what you need to order for the bank to order them from the treasury...that is the minimum they can order. This is different than what they may have in the vault, or at other branches. If you want the bills, tell them you want $2000 and they CAN order them. Don't let them tell you otherwise. Speak to a manager if need be.
    Before knowing this, I actually had one bank thank me for taking their twos, as they "couldn't get rid of them". One would think a bank would go through enough cash that they would use them in place of say, $10's.
    When you get 1000 2's brand new, in sequence, or a fair number of $2 star bills in sequence, it's pretty neat.

    • @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary
      @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary  Před 4 lety +3

      That minimum is based on a bank not wanting to be inconvenienced. You can order as little as a strap of $100 if you want. Just tell the bank you're doing a charity event or something and you need the bills for that. What you need is what you need. If they cant accommodate, tell them you will have to consider banking elsewhere.

    • @shonuf1
      @shonuf1 Před 4 lety +3

      @@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary I probably wasnt clear. If the bank physically has to order Bill's because they nor any of their other branches have what you want, their minimum order for 2's is $2000 worth. Here is the link specifying the minimum order quantity per denomination www.frbservices.org/resources/financial-services/cash/depositing-ordering/currency.html
      FWIW I wouldnt know this if a relative isnt a branch manager at a bank. And like many others posting below, I would have blindly accepted the "we dont have any nor can we get any" response I received before.

    • @shonuf1
      @shonuf1 Před 4 lety +1

      @@dcxdanny I think part of it is that the smaller banks don't have the assets nor resources to hold or shift $2s around branches for one guy that wants a few. One of the branches initially had $900 worth they were happy to give me as they said they hadn't been able to get rid of them.
      Many of the major banks I refuse to do business with. I'll take some inconvenience with smaller institutions, over the major players policies and fees.

I've encountered that many times while going to banks that I'm not a member of. As for requesting a special order at a bank that you _are_ a member of, you are right, they must take a request for a special order as long as it is within reason.

      They will order them if you ask them to. In this video, you may notice that the teller had an even stack of 100 (he still counted them out though). That's because they come in that way, whether ordered by the bank for their own purposes or because a customer requested them. So go back to that bank and ask them to order them - they really can't turn you down unless they want to be difficult. Order 100 and then you'll have nice, clean, crisp and sequential bills to use for those gifts.

      People giving them as gifts and holding onto them is the reason they're so rare when they're actually not that rare, they have no velocity as they dont circulate as much as $1s. There's only 10 times as many $1s as there are $2s but people see a lot more than ten times as many $1s, maybe the fed should just bring the numbers up to the same as $1s and then they will circulate far more.

The most they would order for me was a few hundred. Banks will very easily give you a hard time. Even if you wanted a federal reserve brick. Tellers don't even know what that is. I'm in Pennsylvania. They don't allow the general public anymore to to this you have to have a business. Every now and then I'll ask the bank if they have any sometimes I'll get about 15- 20 once in a great while

    • @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary
      @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary  Před 8 měsíci

      Most banks are stubborn that way. I've never needed that many, but a gentlemen who is in the full movie (also on my channel) gets a large quantity whenever he wants - the bank knows him and knows he will be requesting them, so they have them handy. Since you don't have a business, you can say something along the lines of "I'm doing a charity donation" or "I'm giving them to sick kids in hospitals" (which is a great idea anyway), or maybe working for a fair or event where they are being used. That would help convince a bank to get them in bulk. Ultimately though, if you have an account with them, and you request a withdrawal in any amount of $2s, they should order them for you. Period.

    How about the fact that banks don't always STOCK them because there's not much demand for them? how about the months I've asked at MY bank every payday and they never had even one?
    How about when I asked about ordering some the teller thought I'd have to buy a block of them, you can't just order 5 or 10 of them, you'd have to order probably a brick of 1,000= $2,000 worth
    A brick contains 1000 bank notes and they arrive sealed from the Fed. To get a brick of $2 bills from the bank you need to order in increments of $2000.

Your comment is not wrong at all, but considering how a majority of people don't even think they MAKE $2 bills anymore, the fact that there are a good number of banks that have them or can get them should make this an eye-opening video for many.
