Why you should spend $2 bills instead of keeping them

- Before you stash your 2 dollar bill somewhere, consider spending it! There are more positives in doing so than there are by hoarding it away; the director of The Two Dollar Bill documentary answers this CZcamsr's question and shares how $2 bills - even if they're couch collectibles -enhance a transaction. You always get some kind of 2 dollar bill reaction and usually it's memorable.

I went to Taco Bell once, and I paid with a $2 bill and some other bills. The woman at the window handed it back and told me it was counterfeit and she was going to call the police. I told her to get her manager. When her manager came to the window, I gave him the $2 bill and told him she wouldn't accept it. He asked her why and she said because it's counterfeit. He took it and told her one more stupid mistake like that and he'll fire her.
That's fantastic. Thanks for sharing. I hope you went back there the following week and bought some more stuff from her with $2 bills.
LOL, I didn't think to do that, but I guarantee you, I'll definately do that the next time I go, and I'll post what happens on here again.
Troy Gibbs this happened to me at a kroger I used to work at, the kid was 18
She could have read that the $2 bill is actually legal tender.
Update?
Especially when travelling and need to offer a tip, $1 is too little, $5 is too much, $2 is just right and gets a smile every time.
I love to spend them. The reactions are priceless, good or bad.
I swear 😂😂
Spending $2 Bills helps to make it look like more are in circulation. They only seemed “rare” because they are plenty of people who hold on to them. And banks have them, so you can basically get them whenever you want.
Correct. Plenty of videos on our channel try to drive home those exact points. Thanks for the comment.
I spend $2 bills, why because I like the reaction people give me when I hand them a few $2 bills for my purchase 💵
Today I went out and spent $2 bills for the first time ever, and…
They are incredibly convenient actually, typically most purchases are an even number so you can top off the last bill as a $2 note, or small purchases like 2 to 4 dollar items you can simply use one or two bills with the correct change. It’s incredibly useful, and I will continue to spend them
When I was in the Navy (long ago), the enlisted men were paid in cash. There was a requirement that it had to be the least number of bills. So every town with a Navy installation was swimming in $2 bills.
You should do seperate videos of how using the $2 bill really pisses people off and how millenials think they're fake.
The epitome of fun is to buy something at any drive-up with a $2 bill.
Have you seen this video then? It's all $2s at a drive-thru. czcams.com/video/WT25xaYLdoI/video.html
I spend them. I don't get to my bank enough to get them through. I used $2 Bill's to pay for a haircut at a barber school in my town. Most students are late teens or early twenties. They were shocked to see them. Keep up the good work!
I don't go to the bank often, but when I do...I always ask if they have any $2 dollar bills available. I typically buy $20 or $40 worth of $2 dollar bills, and I enjoy spending them at either a fast food restaurant, or a gas station, because I find that those establishments give me the biggest reaction. Typically they ask me "what is this?' or "is this real/legit?" I think its great when the person behind the counter has to call a "manager" or another employee to verify that a $2 bill is real money :)
People don’t realize that the $2 bill is still being produced.
I didn’t until I got 5 from 2009 and 2013.
@@mitchellmaytorena1137 And that's just the series year, not the print year.
Oof
Ok i dont want any mean comments but how can you tell the printed year.
@@wendyaminzadeh2165 there is not a definitive way to pin point what year it was made (or at least none that I know of). My best suggestion is to look at the serial number. If it’s a higher number, then it’s probably made later.
Another thing to consider is that the more people use them the more demand there is for them.
Once I went to Target the cashier said "Wow I dont see these often. You should not spend them because they are rare." I told her "most people think they are rare from a misconception that they are valuable because they are not heavily circulated."
I used 5 $2 bills today. Let's keep them in circulation!
Love to hear it! Thanks for sharing.
Yes you are right I have seen how people react to receiving one when you pay for something sometimes they ask if it is legal tender and ask their boss or someone in authority if they should receive it
In another video a man was arrested when paying with $2.00 bills because Best Buy personnel were ignorant of their validity. The police people were just as ignorant, and while the FBI clarified the bills validity, the man had to be held in jail accused of paying with counterfeit money.
I would have sued them for $2 million payable in $2 bills. I guarantee Best Buy would be sending out a memo then.
Could you make a video on how it pisses people off that people use two dollar bills, I have heard of this often!
I like that idea. The video title could be: "Why the $2 bill pisses people off" I think people would watch that!
I use them as change, at my peach stand at the farmers market
And how do your customers react?
They enjoy getting one!!
My wife and I were flying to the Philippines on a stopover a small child was extremely well behaved I took a $2 out of my wallet and gave to the parents and said save this for him for being a good boy today.
My family on both sides being from the south. We where all given 2 dollar bills . My dad and grandfathers told me to always carry around . A two dollar bill for good luck and to stay in money . If i remember right its back from 1800’s and on. Because my grandpa and my grandfather where born at the very tale end of the 1800’s .
I learned about the $2 bill in elementary when someone paid for some chips and cookies with a $2 bill
If you have only one keep it
More than 1 however I would spend them
But I want chips 😩
Mr. Bleach lmao
Find a bank that has them and get a hundred, use them whenever.
I have a 102 of them collecting them for a long time
I have 23 of them but I don’t want to spend them because my grandpa gave them to me and told me to hold on to them
I got 2 dollar bill for Christmas and I left it in an envelope with a few other bills, one day my brother asked me if he could borrow 5 dollars and I said sure, but he mistakenly confused my 2 dollar bill with a $1, I got so mad, I didn't know you could get them at the bank, but still.. that 2 dollar bill was special for me.
Lol. I feel you. It's rare to received one. Noy counting the bank of course.
wow never crossed my mind i will be spending mine in the near future I love a story
Do y'all know that you can go to your local bank and request 2 dollar bills and 1 dollar coins, also half dollar coins. They will always have them. It's just interesting to use them, more fun in my opinion.
You have to be REALLY into currency to have analyzed it at this level, but it totally makes sense. I’ve gotta try this at a few of the cash only places I go to (since I rarely carry cash)
I'm not really into currency, but I do have enough of an interest in the quirky $2 bill to have made a documentary about them and start this channel. But yeah, I'd recommend getting some from the bank and using them - it makes spending money a lot more interesting.
What’s the value from one Mint to another Mint on the $2 bill when you collect this?
Are the danbury collection ones useable? i just got a set of the us space race bills, with all the paint or whatever danbury puts on them, are they still useable as money?
They are legal currency but I doubt anyone would willingly accept one without a fuss. If you try to spend one like that, please film the transaction and send it to me!
Great video! Do you think you can make some longer style videos along with the short ones? You could answer a bunch of similar questions in one video that all have a very similar answer...
We did a few recently that got into the 6-7 minute mark. It just depends on the question, and what it takes to answer it. If we have questions that can be grouped together, yes, it'd be a good idea to lump them into one longer video that covers everything. We'll look into that! We do have a lot of questions that have been submitted. Thanks.
my question is how often do you go to the bank to get a new round of twos? do you get them in stacks? if so how many stacks? and how long does that one stack or stacks last you? PS love you videos. every since your video I have started to use twos for every thing including tipping
Great question. Hard to say recently, because after we did this video czcams.com/video/bpfBAwf2HPI/video.html we had enough $2 bills to last us for a while. We're still coasting on those and won't need any more for another month or two. But generally, I'll take what the bank has - normally between $100 and $200, and use them until they're out, and then go looking for more. I use them only for smaller purchases, and I'll drop one in as a tip here and there, so 100 of them lasts around a month or so. Thanks for the compliments on our videos! And glad to see you use $2s more often now. That's part of the mission. :)
I received five $2 bills for change a week ago. They were very crisp and appeared to be almost unused. Upon inspection I noticed that they were all sequential serial numbers. Are they worth anything more than the $2 face value?
No. There are people on eBay who are selling a strap of 100 sequentially-numbered $2 bills, and they want you to think it's worth more than $200, so they sell it for $239 or something. Bills of all denominations are printed in a serial number sequence, and any strap of any denomination will be in sequence. Not worth a penny more than its face value. Go spend those!
Is USD 2 value now I have a cousins that comes an give it away at home is it valid to buy stuff
Spend 'em -- you count less bills than a stack of $1's; and then you can also use $1 coins!
Agreed!
I still got one from like four years ago
love the $2 bills the new style and the old I have one stampped the first day of issue in 1976
i absolutely love this...
Even that 2 dollars bill Uncirculated that u got on eBay can you use to spin something?????
I love them. As a kid my allowance was always paid in $2 bills. My naval officer dad was paid with them during the 40s and 50s. I’ve had them refused when paying for things. I used to give them to the neighborhood kids, the few I knew, on Halloween.
Thanks for the comment. Regarding the fact that $2 bills were used to pay naval officers, you might appreciate this short I posted earlier this year: czcams.com/users/shorts8KvpTfnsqbE?feature=share
When will you post another video?
This is brand new. Next video in either 1 week or 2
I lost a bet for $100 once. I got fifty new $2 bills and stacked them tightly on a piece of cardboard and painted the top edge with a few layers of rubber cement. Then I put the stack into a checkbook cover and gave my friend a pad of tear-off $2 bills. That was years ago, and I think he still has it.
I just got one today and I wanna keep it because it looks kinda cool
Most people keep them, but I'd keep the one you're talking about, go to the bank and get some more, and spend those!
The Two Dollar Bill Documentary that’s smart thank you
I have a $2 dollar bill that was printed back in 1979 with an series A are those worth more or are they just worth $2 Dollars. I thought they Quit making them.just too add I have over 100 $2 dollar Bills
Two bucks. They still print them - last done in October 2018. Best idea is to go out and spend them, as this video suggests.
in my opinion, keep like, 1 or 2 for yourself, if you come across others, spend them as you would any other bill.
Good opinion!
Nice video
I have $2 bill it starts 00 and it’s 2003A series how much it’s worth?
$2
I never thought about it like this before. I have about $150 worth of $2 bills, just because I like saving them. I’m going to get a few more to spend, just to see people’s reactions - once the pandemic is over, of course. That should be fun.
It will be! You're not gaining anything by holding onto those $2s - they're not going up in value.
haha this pandemic will never end thanks to republicans
Hello, I have a question.... Why the hell do they exist I mean they are cool but they just seem like an odd ball. Are they used like the silver dollar of which can be used to sell when prices go up for paper (like silver and gold prices) an answer would be nice and thank you for your time
It was part of our currency system from the first day the government issued money. It was more practical then, as items were of lower cost. With inflation nowadays, you can't get much for a dollar, but people just don't want to use the $2, thinking it's a novelty. But it saves the government money on printing, since you get twice the value than you do for printing ones. There's really a lot more to this answer, but that's the basics. I appreciate the question... watch some more videos on this channel (especially the full movie) and you'll learn a whole lot more.
Thank you, this puts my mind at rest now that this information is know, and your right about it not being used much... Tis a pity but we can change that for the better in the future
I’m here after my grandma gave me a two dollar bill for fun...it’s very crisp and looks like it came off the presses yesterday. I’m going to keep it, just because I don’t want anyone to think I’m crazy and call the cops, even though it’s perfectly legal tender.
Here's an idea... go the bank and get some more! Then spend those. It's great to keep some as collectibles, but it's better to use them, since as you said, it's perfectly legal tender.
Why is Jed Clampitt on the $2 bill?
Is it worth holding on to or seeing somebody smile? Do people have better reactions? Do people react at all?
The video we posted before this one shows exactly what can happen when you spend $2 bills. czcams.com/video/vbcmOY2A1qQ/video.html
There’s an awesome scrap yard here in Texas Houston area that pays you in $2 bills pretty cool ! I love his commercials here ! So if you have a total of $300 of scrap metal you get 150 $2 bills
We are aware! Is it C&D? We have an interview with the owner and have been contemplating a CZcams video on them, but we're holding it back to hopefully be part of a larger video
The Two Dollar Bill Documentary yes sir great place and owner I’ve been there numerous times. Awesome hopefully we will get to see them in your video
I also get the same reaction when when I spend half dollars
I’ve been using 2 dollar bills for years as tips and small purchases. Most of the time people are excited to get them. But I have been refused a few times to use them.
where can I get a $2 bill at face value?
Are coin, currency, and stamp collecting a thing of the past for youngsters today? This was an educational and fun experience in my youth, but I don't see this happening anymore.
Any thoughts?
I believe it is a fading industry, yes. Many currency dealers I've met while shooting at trade shows have said they feel the same way. With paper currency being used less in the digital age, there is less interest in older money. I'm not sure there's a fix, either. It's a sad truth, but we're heading to a time with less and less interest.
I have a 2 dollar bill in my phone case...I don’t know why
Hi, my significant other collects $2 bills. We just watched the video that said they were made in 1976, 1995, 2003, 2009 etc..
How my significant other just received 2007 $2 bills in consecutive order.... what's going on????
I'd have to see those bills... I just double checked, and the resources I have confirm that $2 bills have 2003 and 2009 years on them, but nothing in between. Are you sure you didn't get 2017 bills?
I don't have something like this in my country, its unique that people in your country don't even know that some bill are exist.
But it is good way to make transaction more fun, at least you have something to chat about.
Agreed. Thanks for the comment.
Would you like one?

I’m guessing from your videos you’re in the phillipines/indonesia or somewhere in that region? I have some bills from the phillipines in the ‘40s i could send you
I put mine in Church Christmas Sunday.
My dad had one for his entire life
I have at least on $2 bill stowed away at home, and I plan to keep it just because they're so infrequently used and thus hard to come by. Maybe some time in the future I'll start going to the bank and getting stacks of $2 for spending.
That sounds like a good idea.
What’s the history of the two dollar bill
I keep whatever 2 dollar bills I get. I got my first one from my grandfather and assumed they were rare, until i learned my dad shops at a hunting store that gives them out in change.
Nevertheless I’m a collector of rare or uncommon currency, so I’m looking to hold onto mine.
Lots of people hold theirs, but remember, the $2 bill isn't rare - you can always get more at the bank. You might find as much enjoyment spending them as you do saving them, as the video shows.
I spend, and everyone loves them. Dunkin Donuts loves them and I usually sprinkle in a few one-dollar coins and sometimes the Kennedy 50 cent pieces (which are always available at the banks). It sometimes looks like I an paying with an inherited coin collection! But these are all general circulation coins with only face value. The $2 bill is icing on the cake and everyone loves them. Spend on!
50 cent pieces are still in circulation? I haven't seen one in ages, although 50 years ago we spent them all the time.
@@porkyfedwell You can get fifty-cent pieces (Kennedy) at most banks. They usually have rolls of them available. I use them for fun at McDonalds and elsewhere where the young ones are working.
@@larryhagemann5548 bamboozling the youngsters? That's reason enough for me. :)
I actually found this video because I was looking to see if any CZcamsrs had ever spent a $500 or higher bill in person, or tried to (they’re worth much more than face value). If a $2 is rare, imagine a $500. I myself didn’t even realize they were legal tender. Most everyone would think it was counterfeit for sure lol
Glad you found the channel! Here's a video on the $500 and $1,000 bills: czcams.com/video/p_W1dEOjJ6M/video.html

It would be nice to see more 2 dollar bills coming from the bank. If you’re running into the store for a soda it’s at least $ 1.50 or $ 1.75 so you may as well use a 2 dollar bill, why carry around two 1 dollar bills.
I agree that banks should give them out more freely, but would most people want them? They should, but many people still think they're a rare commodity that can't be spent. If you want them, just ask your bank for them! If they don't have any on hand, they can order them.
Is a 2$ bill worth more than 2$? Or only to people who collect them?
Most of them are worth $2, just like a $5 bill is worth $5. There are some bills with unique features like a fancy serial number or a printing error that make it worth more. And then as you say, some collectors may find more value in some twos for a particular reason. But they are regular currency, still being printed and still worth $2. Several videos on this channel explain in more detail, so watch a few more of my vids and learn something new!
It is funny when you spend one and people think they are rare. I told them them just go to the bank and they are glad to give them $2 bills. I amnow seeing Kennedy half dollars circulating again due to the shortage of quarters. And my friend made a good point yesterday that the $50 bill is the new $20 given the price of paying for gasoline with cash. I think the $2 bill is on the verge of a resurgence. The coolest thing about the $2 bill is that it is arguably our prettiest currency given the image of the Signiing of the Declaration of Independence on the backside. Question for those who are $2 bill fans - who is the guy wearing the hat (the only one far in the background) on the back of the $2 bill?
Being a teacher, I had to do further research as to the "man in the hat: (I am now waiting for the Where's Waldo joke below). Two different stories bound - one is that it is Stephen Hawkins of Rhode Island who actually signed the Declaration of Independence. The other is that it is the then Governor of Pennsylvania John Dickinson who was opposed to the Declaration of Independence - perhaps a clever inside joke/comment by the painter Trumbull since the document was being signed in Philadelphia, PA.
I, as a bank teller, hand out $2 bills whenever it calls for them to be given out…example $7 gets $5 & $2. Makes it quick and clients for the most part like them.
That's outstanding! Love to hear it. What city are you in?
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary I’m close to the Savannah, GA area.
$2 bills are a real life fever dream
I like to keep them I have a bunch of uncirculated full and quart and half sheets paid professional to put in pitcher frame. From 1976 to 2013 they do bring joy because they different and keep a few single to change it for 2 singles so they can go away with one. Definitely bring up discussion. People will look at them in and be shocked.
I wish I could get two dollar bills. My bank doesn’t stock them. So it’s rare that they even have them. Does anyone know if any bank will let me trade for them even if I don’t have an account with them? Although I think that I’ll run into the same problem as my bank.
You should be able to simply ask your bank to order them for you. They get ordered straight from the Fed and come in straps of 100 bills. If they say they won't (or can't), they're just saying so because they don't want to be inconvenienced. They order money often, so they can add $2s to any order.
Have your bank order them fro you. Most banks have a policy of ordering currency for their customers. Ask them to order a brick of $2's when they make their next currency order. If they value you as a customer they will do it.
msticks msticks ok. Thanks for the info. I’ll ask them.
The Two Dollar Bill Documentary ok thanks I’ll try asking them to order some
