Flat-Out In The £3.5m Bugatti Bolide!

- The track-only Bugatti Bolide is deranged. Because as its starting point the Bolide doesn’t take some lithe and lightweight little powertrain, but Bugatti’s juggernaut of an engine - the infamous 1,578bhp 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16.
It’s arguably the world’s greatest hypercar powertrain, and in the Bolide it’s strapped to a true racing car chassis, an entirely new carbon monocoque built to FIA safety requirements.
The mad engine and unique chassis are then clothed in bespoke carbon body panels, which look knee-tremblingly good and generate almost three tonnes of downforce at the Bolide’s top speed. Which is 227mph in the high-downforce setting.
Bugatti is building only 40 Bolides, they’ll cost £3.5m each, and Top Gear is the first to experience it in full flight, besides chief test driver (and Le Mans winner) Andy Wallace...
Over to Top Gear Magazine’s editor-in-chief, Jack Rix, who tries not to be sick in the passenger footwell.

Didn’t know that Batman knew how to design a Bugatti “The Bugattimobile”
Glad I'm not the only one that immediately thought 'Batmobile'!

Jack: Compares it to a Model-S
Andy: Procedes to give him whiplash and acts like it was all part of the experience...haha
Jack - "I imagine a Tesla Plaid could do this..."
Andy - "You wot mate?"
A tesla plaid can’t even beat the Bugatti veyron from 20 years ago that did 255 mph with 1001 hp the model s plaid has 1100 hp with better drag yet only did 216 mph and that was a modded plaid 😂

The combination of materials is wonderful and how Bugatti incorporates it all is exciting. I love that engine. The engineering and stoutness of that powertrain just boggles my mind. An true in-depth video of the underpinnings would be epic.
I believe this is the most violent, highest roaring, most beautiful machine i've seen so far!
Imagine being in bugatti and thinking about tesla
No kidding. What a putz!
That's the amazing thing about Tesla. They've made things sooooo right if you think about them inside a Bugatti
have you experience a plaid launch? those cars are quick from 0 to 60 lol
this bugatti was released because of the tesla plaid and the hennesy. Elon keeps bringing down the 0-60, and saying its the fastest production car. The Tesla spacex package will be a tesla plaid with cold gas thrusters that they use on the space ships to make it accelerate faster.... Elon has been promising it for 10 years now....
@@rador3573 yeah and they can do nothing else. No emotion just quick but not fast. Ugly as well but that’s subjective
I think it's safe to say that Andy Wallace is one of the most precious gems we ever had the blessing to have in the car culture...
I was just gonna say the same thing. He may be the chief test driver, but hes such a great ambassador for the brand too
I always love it when we get him in an episode.
💯
Why?
I really hope he has a Chiron himself
Andy Wallace's enthusiasm and knowledge are great.
My monocoque is pretty stiff watching this
This is basically the Sesto Elemento of this era

•Same powertrain and figures as the road going models

He REALLY compared this BEAST with a Model S...
For that money you could throw a party with 30 of your friends and just give them all a Model S plaid as door prizes.
He compared the acceleration. Model s plaid did beat Chiron in quickness, and they share the same engine.

Rear of that Bollide, is pure poetry. Great design!

TESLA NAME SHOULD NEVER BE PUT IN THE SAME SENTENCE AS BUGATTI😑
man....that back looks gorgeous
So does the front!
That thing is insane. I’m kind of surprised it’s only 3.5M. Seems like it should be even more than that
The lack of homogolation makes it cheaper than a full production car :) If they wanted to make this road legal that would be a different story, easily double the price
@@YonePepe Doubt they could ever make this road legal without fundamentally changing the car - i.e. adding a lot of weight and reducing the power to make it emission and noise compliant. Anyways, it's actually for the best. Insanely fast cars like these *belong* on a racetrack. Driving this car in dense city traffic is killing its essence.
Here's another reality: This car is too fast for mere mortals and can only be fully utilized and enjoyed by professional race car drivers.
I guess the problem isn't the price so much for people who can afford it but to be part of the very restricted amount of people on the whitelist
@@McLarenMercedes Yes it wouldn't be possible, what I said was purely hypothetical
It’s not 3.5M. It’s way more. You can just buy this car even if you have the money. Bugatti must invite you to own one and you need to have had a bunch of other Bugattis bought and then hope to get chosen for a car like this.
Truly amazing I've waited so long for it to come out & about 😮😊❤
I love this. This is amazing. I am so glad they have made it.
The ROAR is so visceral, and it looks phenomenal!
FOR REAL this engine sound is just freaking NASTY
Nah, I heard this car in real life and it's pretty underwhelming. Especially for a track-only car
Best sounding W16 yet. This could easily be Bugatti's WEC Hypercar material.
If you think this will go into WEC, then you know absolutely nothing about WEC
They would probably use the new v16 hybrid in wec if they were going to enter anything.
@@oli_onion could maybe make slightly more sense than this powertrain but still not viable. There's a reason the engines are smaller these days. The goal isn't to refuel every 15 minutes (time it takes to empty the chiron's tank on full gas). Even as a hybrid powertrain that V16 will consume way too much gas and would probably not be reliable enough for 24 hours of full send
I wouldn't say easily. They would need to do some very drastic changes in order to compete, to the point where the final vehicle wold be radically different:
Just some numbers to think about in WEC Hyperclass:
- Maximum output: 500 kW (about 671 hp)
- Minimum weight: 1030 kg
If this thing were to race they will have to cut down a little less than 1000 HP from its original output (1600 ps). Supressing some turbos might do the trick while also lowering weight but they would also need room to install a hybrid system (which adds even more weight!) and on top of that they would need to significantly reduce downforce figures. The resulting car would be underpowered, overweight and tremendously limited in terms of downforce. And that's without going into the specificities of the engine and its reliability.
Yeah sure buddy use a 16.4l QUAD TURBO CHARGED W16 racing for more than 6 hours surely nothing will go wrong at all
i love how they use wago connectors on this prototype. Such an amazing car.
that looks absoultely beautiful yet so violent immense bit of engineering and designing
Hope Lazante figures out a road-legal conversion solution for Bolide :P
why?
not sure about that one 🤣they are magicians, but there is only so much they can do at lanzante.
There will be road legal versions of the Bolide The Lee Collection confirmed it
Feel like people ruin them when converting them to road cars, the thing was made for the track
@@Rezcuz but if you could....
Could you imagine a modern-day Can-Am series with these racing around the track? One can dream. That unrestricted W16 exhaust note is one of the best sounds.
Would be a sight to behold
I've never like the W16's exhaust note before this; it's a bit farty. But this sounds much rawer and less airy, I like it. Mean, mean, mean.
@@thesprawl2361 yeah thank all the mufflers and noise regulations for that. This is a (mostly) unrestricted exhaust and it actually sounds like a 16 cylinder. Wait till you hear Bugatti's new V16, it's even better.
That's bloody wonderful! Fantastic job creating this beauty.
Omg. That raw power delivery. Not mention the seismic exhaust note.
what a bonkers car. i don’t even think a Valkyrie AMR is quite as violent or as unhinged as this thing in my eyes
Over a single lap, I don't think this car would know where the Valkyrie went. This is a track only hypercar for sure but the Valkyrie is pretty much a pseudo prototype. To beat it, you'd need another race car.
Yeah, maybe in the straights. The Bolide is heavier though, the Valkyrie would lose it in the corners.
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks i dunno they claimed a theoretical nurburgring nord lap time of 5 mins and 23 seconds 💀 but tbf the Valkyrie is considerably lighter than this, more so than i originally thought
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks You know there is a Valkyrie AMR Pro? I would love to see GM T50 Lauda vs Bolide vs AMR Pro to settle this!
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks The Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR was only 2 seconds faster than a GT3 car at the Bahrain GP circuit. That's not that impressive when you consider the hype around it.

Right at the end, at 19:31 into the video, why are there extra surrounds on the left side twin-stacked exhausts, but not on the right side? Something missing, or is there extra airflow and therefore additional cooling on the right side? Just looked like a piece was missing!
Just the right type of unhinged idea this. Sounds like a movie where they need to artificially amp up the engine noises. Love it.
Those first 10 secs of the video!
No music can beat that
music to the car fanatics
Man, I do hope the owners take these down to SRO GT1 Sportsclub track days. Seeing these on track with the other track weapons would be amazing.

Because it's one of the fastest cars in the world off the line.
This is a proper car & why Tesla isn’t even fit to lace its boots… Real petrolheads know 👍 What a car! 😎
Exactly! Tesla is garbage
You must not understand what the plaid is capable of
Because Elon Musk gave him a blow job
The way that his whole head is drawn forward in every break ing, while the old racing driver's head is as stiff as a tree trunk is proof of how racing is a very harsh sport
Each man has his own vocation; his talent is his call. There is one direction in which all space is open to him.
Koenigsegg after seeing this: "ok lets make a track only jesko"

That's what the jesko attack is for dingus
@@angry_birdsspacex That's still a road car. Koenigsegg hasn't made a true track ONLY car. Yet. I think if they did they would likely end up with a 1600hp 1100kilo car and it would ABSOLUTELY destroy the Bolide lol. The new Jesko motor has ZERO turbo lag.
They already made a proper track weapon whose true capabilities have not even been realised and it would be the infamous one:1
@@angry_birdsspacex Funny seeing u here
I noticed Le Mans Driver’s neck is so strong, he’s not swinging back n forth like the co driver, crazy how his body is used to this level of G force in straights turns and braking zone. Result of Years of training and experience and some people refuse to believe that racers are also athletes.
its because he can hold on to the steering wheel and is also prepared for exactly when he is going to brake.
but also he is bracing his upper body against the steering wheel and knows when the braking is happening
Thats because he knows when he's going to brake and he can brace whereas the passenger doesn't know when he is going to and by the time he does brake, its too late to brace lol. Also holding onto the steering wheel helps
The actual reason is that the passenger didn't do his belts up tight, probably for dramatic effect in the video. If he had done his belts up properly, he would have been fine!
This car is truly a thing of beauty.
It's watching the microphone lead throw forward, then get pinned to the rear bulkhead, that shows how monstrous the performance is!
YESSSS!! Never thought anyone would get their hands on this car to review it
WOW! Double the power to weight ratio of the Veyron!

Incredible that he says its so easy to drive considering how menacing it looks. Would love to know what the Nürburgring laptime is of this car.
The Bolide is 40 of the most exciting, savage cars a lucky few will experience. I love when brands let engineers and designers go wild.
That thing is brutal. You feel as if the planet slowed down slightly when it took off.
That pit launch looked fast on camera which is insane considering the gear they're working with. Top gear haha.
Nürburgring when? 🤤😍
probably never because it isn't as fast as bugatti wants us to believe
The Ring won't allow unrestricted exhaust notes even for test/tune trials by manufacturers.
Never. Bugatti make sure you can never directly compare their cars to others (probably because it would be underwhelming)
"So much torque, the chassis twisted coming off the line"
I would like to see it race in Le Mans with the golden era of Hypercars (I know it did laps in La Mans already)
This car sounds like how I imagine my 2006 corsa sounds with its halfords exhaust
Sound of unfiltered w16 is phenomenal. For best sounding engine if high pitch is not your preference
What a piece of engineering.
That's not a car its an engineering work of art!
I really bloody hope the design language of the bolide carries over to the successor of the Chiron. Anything similar to the way this thing looks on the road would be absolutely immense - especially paired with the V16 hybrid setup Bugatti have coming for us.
From what I’ve heard. It will.
How do you know the new Bugatti will adopt the Bolide design style?
But the Chiron is a grand touring car not a track car why would they make it look like that
@@Riven-19 a car's looks doesn't determine its purpose to that extent. Obviously it won't be anywhere near as extreme as the bolide, but the elements and overall style would be brilliant to see on the road
