Maegor The Cruel is just Henry VIII but married to three wives at once and with no living children all together. He even killed two (maybe three but there is no proof), "divorced" two (more like Rhaena was one to divorce him but whatever), had one die at childbirth and one outlive him. If I remember correctly, some ended up in monasteries, one was punished to live in some sort of prison for cheating, death of like 2-3 of them only made him more afraid he is being betrayed and for one there are suspicions she killed her but 0 proof. But Maegor’s life must’ve been absolutely terrible regardless if he was actually king or not. Everyone hated him for how ruthless he was, he only gave birth to deformed or just still birthed children, he mercilessly murdered people and didn’t give a shit, and then he just died on the throne presumably killed by it but more likely killed by one of the many many many lords who likely hated his guts.

If we go by the theory of Targaryens having actually dragon blood in them, the reason his kids ended up that way could've simply been because Maegor himself had very dominant dragonic genes and his offspring just got inherited them. Blood magic and ancient genetic engineering results in some Targaryens being more cruel and mad than others depending on their draconic genes showing up in different ways. Also could result in physical manifestation of those genes like scales, wings, or blindness. Apparently pale hair and skin could also be a trait credited to draconic genes.

I like the theory that Maegor's kids were all deformed and stillborn because he died at his Trial by Seven, Tyanna resurrected him with R'hllori magic (a la Thoros and Lady Stoneheart), and they came out stillborn and deformed as a side effect of the blood magic combined with their undead Targaryen father (a "dead things don't make new life" type deal)

Fire & Blood (definitely worth reading)
      - Told from the perspectives of several Maesters, Septons and sometimes eyewitness accounts
      - Covers a very brief history of; House Targaryen and Valyria before the Doom, followed afterwards by the "Century of Blood" 102-2 BC, until it goes in depth about Aegon the Dragon and his sisters and how they conquered the realm
      - From there it covers the Reign of Aegon the Conqueror (including his wars with Dorne) all the way to the 7th Targaryen King Aegon III's 16th nameday, which I believe occurs in the year 150 AC
      - There's also "Rise of the Dragon" which is basically an abbreviated version of F&B, but with colored illustrations
