- Brake bleeding can be an intimidating bike repair, but it's actually really easy to do-much simpler than many other repairs.
Today, I'm going to show you how simple the concept actually is, and get you on track to bleed your own brakes.
According to a recent poll, about a third of you are already bleeding your own brakes, so maybe you could help answer some questions in the comment section.
Get yourself some rubber gloves (I know I wasn't wearing them). Also rags and a spray bottle for alcohol or water.

If you want to find a bleed tutorial just find the model of your brake and search for it on CZcams. The GMBN videos are great, and Performance bike also has a few good ones. When in doubt, just go straight to the manufacturer. - Jak na to + styl
1:15 I was like no no no donât do it seth please.
I'm gonna be honest cheif. I don't even own a bike yet. I just like your videos.
You got a mission, bro. You know how awesome it is, you know the technical stuff, you know the riding skills in theory - get a bike mate!
@Aamon Carter also me
Same lol
This was me cos my old bike got stolen, however got a bike today and went riding, going again tomorrow. Definatly get a bike ÂŁ600 second hand hardtail year old cant go wrong, a good investment.
FUI my bike was stolen 3 years ago and I've watched the whole time but only got a bike today. So buzzed
So good man, you explain things so well. I get a how its made feeling everytime I watch you break things down.
SRAM brake bleed process is the simplest. Remove SRAM brake entirely, throw in garbage, replace with anything other than SRAM brakes. You're good to go!!
Hehe, I bled all of mine the same way.
Seth you're the Boss...very useful vid in the first place, but above all I'm amazed by your ingenuity in keeping the channel interesting while NOT riding bikes
Such a good demonstration! Keep this series going!
100% Agreed! I've done a brake bleed before, but just the lever bleed.
I love the new Avatar =)
Hey
as a mechanic, this is an excellent demonstration for showing those new to hydraulic brakes on how they work. excellent content as usual. good work seth!
Iâm relieved to hear that from a mechanic!
@@SethsBikeHacks Haha ive been watching you since your "Are walmart bikes safe?" video 3 years ago... always enjoy your content and commentary. although I fish more often than I bike these days, im always stoked to watch what you upload! I often learn a thing or two and truly appreciate your skill for making videos.
I second that, the demo board was good enough , I may even keep this video for the trainees.
Thanks for not being condescending. You make us feel like we aren't stupid and that many people have the same questions and concerns.
You must have modeled that nose đafter Pinochio
Hahaha
I told him that needs to be a xmas cookie cutter
And Pinocchio lies about the size of his nose...
@Phil: Yeah .. *PG-13!* đ
Phil, it's time for new grips man. Teflon has more stick than those old ones you've got.
Thanks Seth, brake bleeding has always just been something that mystified me a bit and I avoided learning but now I understand more than ever, thanks dude
Hey seth do you still have the box bmx and if you do I was wondering if I could have it because I race at shorham bmx and I dont have a very good bike and it is really heavy it's a 8.2 pound bike
8.2 pounds thatâs light
That clear tubing and syringes brake model was a stroke of genius.
worked as bike mechanic for 5 years with mx and bicycles. Seriously. best explanation iv seen yet.
How do Insert Brake Model Here brakes compare to SRAM brakes? Will they fit my bike? Should I upgrade?
They are great, and they use vegetable oil
@@SethsBikeHacks NICE! Super green, and I can make churros after doing a few laps at the park!
Mineral oil brakes are more reliable and will last longer. We rarely warranty Shimano brakes, they can be maintained to ladt a ling time. I would only buy or recommend Shimano as they are worlds largest manufacturer and can afford the best engineers and testing. DOT fluid brakes have had way too many issues.

It's so satisfying to bleed brakes, especially getting those micro bubbles out. The brakes feel brand new afterwards and you get a whole lot more power and control out the bike!
that model of a brake system you made is really really neat and quite helpful.
neobleidd Agreed! I think your creativity on that model was great Seth. And your explanation, except for the negative pressure reference, was spot on.
I thought this would be like all the other bleed videos, but your clear system is actually a great way to see the whole process. One thing you could have mentioned is tapping the caliper, hose and lever with the back of a screwdriver to jostle bubbles loose. Great stuff!
I started to get the faded feel and pull and it was difficult to lock up my rear wheel. Pads were fine so I took it to my old bike shop twice and asked for a bleed. Both times they just cleaned the rotor and comfortably charged me twenty bucks each time -_- definitely ordering a kit lol
Now everyone "nose" what a brake bleed is now! đ
Them puns are real
Hahahahhahahahahhhahahahah
Hahaha i "nose" you

Unmmm, Iâm speechless. You my friend are a natural born teacher! This the best video I have ever seen on CZcams about anything! Thank you,
this gem fills a critical void in the internet in that snappy-but-rigorous bp style
I was in the 46%
Now youâre not!
William Vlogs and Gaming me too! What even Is brakes? They only make you slower
How do he know
That he is not in the 46%
Hello me
my 2 bikes live in my flat. One has sram brakes, second one - shimano, bleed them myself. WAY cheaper, than taking to LBS. AND, this is the best brake bleed video on youtube so far, ever!
hahaha a "nose" I'm dying. This was the best tutorial and explanation of how things work for brakes I have ever seen. Awesome work Seth!
I find it amazing that there are people out there who are clueless on how brakes work. Or what most of the components are or do.
Interesting to see it from a mountain biker's perspective.
12/10 for production effort! đ„đđ„
Sometimes down-time can be a *blessing!*
I started MTB biking thanks to you
đ„đ€đ»đ„
yea same
As an aircraft engineer i will be showing the young apprentices your video as it shows the raw fundamentals of hydraulic power, keep making these type of videos seth
From a scientific standpoint I think you did a great job of explaining compressible vs non compressible fluids and why having air inside a liquid loop is a problem. Well done Seth, another informative video!
3:04 "looks like a....nose" I spit out my mid day beer at that one.đđ
its the hesitation that makes it golden. just a fraction of a second, but filled with a powerful silence.
Is your injury getting better. Nice video as always
Henceforth I will refer to this process as a brake fart. For that, as much as your excellent explanations that add clarity even to topics I thought I understood, thank you.
This may be the best MTB video on any topic ever. Great channel!
This video is just in time for me cus i just got a new bike with hydraulic brakes
This is a great video like all of themđ
Whoa, stop belitteling yourself! That demonstration model was extremely informative! I personally know how a hydraulic brake works, but you showed some exceptional educational skills right there.
Very cool video!
MY BIKE HAS BEEN SAT FOR WEEKS BECAUSE I GOT HALF WAY THROUGH A BLEED AND GOT ANNOYED WITH IT!!!!!
I needed this video so much!!!
Cheers for reading my mind Seth, you da best!!!!!
Are you going to do another premiere soon? I really liked it
That lever looks like a nose. A PiNoSe. Lol I'm so funny.
Hi
No youâre not
Yes you are
You my friend are the funniest person in the whole entire world
Dude I was just about to bleek my brake but I didnât have the bals to do is.
Now I have courage to do iT! Thanks Seth!..
My son snapped the brake lever off in a crash so I had to replace it, never done one before and it was my first time ever working on hydraulic disc brakes (big nine 20), this video was valuable info and saved our butts as we installed and bled and couldnt work out why it had no pressure, your video showed us what to do with the syringe that came with the kit so we added more fluid then bled and it was better than ever! Thanks Berm peaks
Never clicked on a video so fast
Have you had a chance to ride those Magura brakes yet? Can you do a little review on them at some point?
This right here!
I got MT4s and I am very pleased. Brake power galore and nice to control. What I do not know, however is their fading behaviour because I live in a totally flat area and thus don't do any downhill.
Since we are talking about brakes I discovered a really helpful hack. You can take the rubber/grip part of a pen and put it on your brake lever. It works hella good with my bike. It makes tour bike look better and you have grip on your lever.đ
The homemade brake circuit is awesome! Done with cheap materials you can easily find and does the work. Good job!
Tips for getting used for a big bike when you are small?
Get a smaller bike
@@coen8323 LOL i already got a bike big bike but im getting used to it and trying to handle it
Get a proper sized bike.
WOW 5 likes XD
Make sure your standover height clears your crotch enough and then get adjusted to moving your body more on the bike. If you change things like stems etc don't go overboard. Ride it as it is and then sell the bike and get something that fits once you have a few more skills on the bike đ
Well Seth has be bleeding a lot on this channel
Thanks seth for the like and next wen u come to canada we should go riding together
I'm a bike mechanic and completely agree with everything you say. Great video Seth!
Genius idea , visualising the issues. Way better than the countless 25 minute death metal demo. Top tip to âloadâ the syringe by keeping the pipe in the oil , no I wonât get covered in it next time ! Thanks
Now if only brake lines were clear!
0:37 đđđ that rotor is mounted backwards! đđđ
Le Typ bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Oops
I think this is the best video about bleeding brake ! Merci Seth !
I actually used to work at a bike shop as part of a work experience program and got to help with bleeding brakes. It was actually quite fun and interesting
With them maguras u need to learn trials now
Bike Trials Bucharest haha yeah, unfortuntely Iâve heard/seen some negative feedback of the magura brakes from other people that also ride trials
@@mxrider2strokebraaap54 it is true that they can fail, but this is usualy a problem for those who do a bleed really rare, or they use some different kind of oil, the magura one beein more expensive
@@mxrider2strokebraaap54 i ride trials for 1.3 years and have the same brakes from the begining, magura hs11 hydraulic rim brakes ( the back has a race lever as its stiffer). Ive smashes into benches, poles, rocks, etc. The only damage done is a cut hose wich hapened quite recently
Bike Trials Bucharest Iâve seen peoples maguraâs levers themselves snap form using, but those were like the new levers. The hs33 is great for trials, I run hope trial zone for 2 years and they also work great(with hope tech 3 levers)
@@mxrider2strokebraaap54 that is true tho, most 2015 (mt7)and up use a way better lever and hc3 blades, wich fold away in a crash

Props to you Seth. You are keeping this channel interesting without riding and that's a huge acomplishment. Great videos, keep them coming while I wish you a speedy recovery
I already knew how to bleed the break but I didnât know exactly how it works.
You explained it really good!
Thanks Seth!!!
Hey Seth, you forgot to mention proper disposal of the excess or flushed brake fluid. Never ever pour any mineral oil or DOT fluid down the drain! Contact your local hazardous waste disposal group and obtain the location of the nearest disposal location!
Mineral oil can be dumped outside in the average consumers amount.
It's pretty much harmless.
âWhy not a fartâ
rim brakes will always have a special place in my heart
v brakes with fully worn down pads. ah, that feeling of adrenaline when you realize you can't stop lmao
Good stuff. Last year I watched 10-15 tutorials on youtube, bought the bleed kit, bled the brakes and it worked; strong brakes with no mushy lever. It's now a year later and I've forgotten it all. This video helps the ol' memory.
I'm early so I need to say something funny???
Something funny!!!
Steve Blanchard HA HA HA

Great video! I wanted to do a full system bleed with new oil this winter on my bike and your video came out just in time!
Love your model! Brake bleeding can be tough to wrap your head around... as always, seths bike hacks puts it in a context the layman can see and understand. This channel was born from tutorials!
Honestly I like this kind of video as much or more than those with you riding. So informative and I love the model you built!
Dude, the clear tube idea is fantastic. Great video!
Seth! Such a brilliant video for everyone. Beginners can easily understand what is going on and learn how to do this themselves. For more experienced riders it is useful and entertaining. Awesome video!
Seth! Thank you for this video. It gave me the confidence to do this on my own. Far easier than than I thought it would be.
Thank you Seth!!!! Iâve been wanting to bleed my own brakes fir a while but Iâve been to scared. Youâve given me confidence to go for it!!đ€đŒđ€đŒ
Love how this was released yesterday, which was my birthday and i got a bleedkit as one of the gifts.
This was the best video I have seen so far. Feel way more confident attempting to do this on my own now.
Very good explanation. I'm agree, it is a kind of messy.
Absolutely brilliant explanation, the best content to watch first, that model showing how it works is so helpful, cheers
so much time you have! I always admire how creative you are with your content though!
Thanks so much Seth! I asked for this video a while ago since I got a new mountain bike with hydraulic disk brakes on them. You are great! đ
Hey! Phil!
This is a really good video and gets me excited about being able to service my own bike as needed. Thanks, Seth! Stay upright and keep the rubber side down!

your explosions effects are just so good
Nice work, my 7 year old is so pumped he knows how his brakes work and I was totally diggin it also.
I use those same magura 4 piston brake calipers! Best brake company on the market! I do wanna try hope brakes.
Nice, i knew what a brake bleed was but i didnt know how they get it done, now this basic rig gave me an idea thanks. Still dont need to do this yet to my bike.
Your videos are awesome.. you give new bikers, like me, the courage and will to try new things with our bikes. Taking away the mystery is huge and with my LBS backed up with repairs (COVID bike rush!) DIY is becoming a must.
Seth you put a lot of work into this! It was so informative, thank you for the awesome content!
I literally just brought a brake bleed kit this helps so much thanks Seth
Thank you ! What a great help this video was! I wanted to try and was to scared to but now Iâm going to do it myself!
Im afraid to do any repairs or maintenance on my bike. This was an awesome insight into how to do it and really helped me understand how it works. Thank you !
I just had to stop the video, when I saw the wood lever... to like the video. Awesome video as always!
Amazingly useful video Seth, nice job!
Thanks seth brake bleeding was a a very confusing thing for me. I personally have a beginner bike which uses cable brakes but this is very helpful fir when i upgrade
Seth, I bet you got 1st place in the science fair when you were a kid! Well done sir! Love the working model!!
Great video and thank you for inspiring me to do my own bike videos on my channel!
Why do people dislike this? It's great information and Seth is funny as hell.
THIS! Internet needs more primers like this :) Well done.
Seth it's so cool how you combine information and entertainment đ - keep it up !
Nice one seth! Awesome job simplifying a somewhat confusing topic! Thanks :)
Not what I had expected, solid info, great advice and cool tutorial. Great job.
Thanks for the motivation!
I got 3 sets of Avid Elixir' and an extra front one, still waiting for bleeding/service, AND the bleeding kit and service parts. Maybe I will finally take the time and "breath" new life into them. :)
This is the best tutorial I have seen on brakes thank you Seth, make a our life easier ... You too Phil
Great video. I really enjoy your videos and well thought out explanations.
Well done Seth!! The syringe model was a great idea.
I havenât been able to find a video where I donât get lost in the middle. Thank you for the simple explanations and making that whole demo! Excited to start the process of learning my own bleeds. Where Iâm from a bleed for my front brakes was $80 :( so saving some money and time too!
