- Here are ten bike hacks for MTB and Beyond!
My music: share.epidemicsound.com/trQSg
Alright guys I moved out of my house and I’m officially homeless…or well I’m staying here for now. Not bad. Anyway the move is underway and my normal posting schedule should resume by next week, but for now I’ve got another 10 bike hacks to hold you over. Let’s get started.
One of the best ways to make a quick chain repair is with a master link. Just remove the broken part of the chain, join it again with the master link and you’re on your way. You can keep a master link in your backpack but storing it on your bike means it’ll always be at the ready. I stuffed two links into my bar end and left a piece of string dangling to pull them back out with. What other ways can you think of to secure spare links?
Have you ever been stuck without a bottle opener? Platform pedals seem to have been designed for the job. Just hook the lip of the bottle under the cage and pry it off. I’m sure there’s a spot you can do this even on clipless pedals.
In the comments of the last video someone said that you can clean a chain by tying two toothbrushes together. Let’s try it. I’m assuming that you fasten them at the base so they meet here and pedal the chain between them. Actually, not bad. Using a solvent would help too. If you do this, make sure to clearly label them so you don’t mix up your toothbrushes.
On some bikes, the cables rub against the frame and cause damage to the paint. After a while it can wear it down right to the metal. Velcro pads will not only stop this from happening, but eliminate the noise caused by the cable hitting the frame. If you don’t want to stick velcro to your frame you can also just stick it to the cable. Velcro is available in different colors to match your bike.
Keeping your rotors clean is essential for good braking power. In fact, the oil from your skin can make them practically useless. You can clean them with alcohol and paper towels, but on on the fly these prep pads are really easy. This whole box was 1.50, and the pads can be kept in your travel toolbox, car, or backpack. It’s even good to do this after taking your bike off the rack with all the grime from the road.
Energy gels, or goo packs, are quite useful. They’re basically disgusting syrupy packages of pure calories that you can suck down while training or racing. In a pinch, you can use honey instead. It’s 100% natural, available in packets, and not nearly as disgusting, in fact it’s awesome. In many cases, it’s also much cheaper.
If you have a pickup truck you can carry a bike like this, but protecting your tailgate is essential. They sell really good products that do this, and they even hold the bikes in place, but there’s a cheaper way. Just get a piece of cardboard and cut it to size. You can even customize it to look just like real ones. Fold it at the top, and lay it over your tailgate. Function, economy, and style.
Even a nice clean hydration pack will have that rubbery taste and smell. You can freshen up your reservoir with a drop of citrus. Lemon or lime juice is sold in bottles but you can also use the real thing. Now, you enjoy nice lime-infused water for your ride instead of rubber. Do avoid dropping whole fruits in there though, as a Camelbak sangria will ruin your reservoir in a hurry. A drop won’t though.
Even good hydration packs make your back sweaty, but you can take the edge off with some ice. Fill the pack partially with water, and fill it with air. Lay it in the freezer and take extra care not to block the water outlet. Once it’s frozen solid you’ll have a nice layer of ice right along the back of the reservoir. Top it off with water, and it’ll stay icy cold. This will melt way slower than ice cubes, while still providing enough meltwater to drink as you go.
More than one commenter said that tying a zip tie or string around your hub can keep it clean, and I’ve seen this on cruisers and novelty bikes. Out of curiosity, let’s see how well this works. Maybe it would work eventually? Yeah, a bigger piece of string, leather strap, or zip tie might work better, but let me show you a better way.
So there you go, 10 more bike hacks. To keep doing these videos I need you guys to tell me your hacks below. If it’s one we haven’t done before, you could see it here in the future. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.

1:46 I knew that trick before this hack video, but I didn't know you gotta label them. I've lived with black teeth for years and finally found the cause! Thx so much!

Aye wtf my dood I thought I was the only one
5:27 he's lucky the scissors fell on the flip-flop strip
i was wondering if anyone else saw that, .......
Logan F same lol
Dude that was close
They actually missed the strap and his foot and hit the base of the flop. Go frame-by-frame on PC with . and ,
Wow
5:28 : Your sandals did a really good job saving your feet from the scisors
HACK: To avoid impaling your foot with scissors (like at 5:28), wear cycling shoes. Or platform disco shoes. Or combat boots. Or wingtips.
Hahaha
Hey guys! Some of you saw a livestream in your subscription feed and this was a total mistake on my part. I was going to do it but decided not to on account of massive construction noise across the street. This was never meant to make it into your feed, so I apologize to any of you waiting around for me to show up. I’m all moved into my new house in Asheville, but still ironing out little things like stable Internet and a desk to work at. I’ll get you the next contest winner video this week, followed by a new project with wood (hint: Seth’s Bike Shack). Thanks to everyone for being so patient. CZcams is now 100% full time for me, so the video output is going to increase shortly. For all of you who have been subscribed since the early days, WE have finally made it.
It's alright man, just keep up with the videos because you do a hella great job on these videos

It's CRITICAL that your "Dakind-of" pickup truck hack does NOT cover the license plate as shown. Getting pulled over means less time at the trail and fewer dollars for bike parts. Cheers!
FasterFasterFaster great point to add that seth didn't even co sider
Or if you are stupid and wanna loophole thr laws, buy 15 licence plates and put them everywhere so the cops can see.
5:28 ouch that‘s gonna hurt for a while :)
@Stain It missed the strap and the foot and hit the side of the flop.
3:38 - the customisation is amazing! :))
“Function, Economy, and Style” you took the word right out of my mouth
GOOD HACK! For tubeless tires you can remove the valve core and use a small zip tie as a dip stick to see how much sealant you have left!!
Seth is a legend
Seth is relate-able, at heart everybody is a seth!
Hey Seth. Great videos! An old sleeping bag works great as a tailgate pad. Just unzip the foot end till the corner, pull the one side of your gate off and slip the bag over. Then its protected on both sides. Tested on a 2013 GMC Sierra.
Back in the day...we used a strip of rawhide around the hubs or pipe cleaners. Worked fine. 🙂
Toothbrushs are great to clean those small places. 🪥
Love your videos! 💕
the kid playing w/ your bike 2:14 :)
Matt Bafundo who is it?
no idea
Matt Bafundo i saw that too
His son or his daughter?
JYoSieFuS we are not sure
Ha! there's a guy in my town who rips around with a blanket on his tailgate with "dakine" written on in fluorescent Orange spray paint.
Eli Upper those are the real neighborhood legends
I'm new to this channel as I've just started MTB-ing again. I had the idea of the toothbrushes in my mind and then I saw the thumbnail so gave it a try. Works great. I also found that if you tape them together right you can open them like a pair of spring-clip pliers and when you let go they clamp closed around the chain.
Good video Seth. The string around the hub for keeping it clean is as old as bicycling itself. Originally they used a loop of leather thong (strap) with the suede side of the leather on the hub and the shiny side of the leather facing out. Small diameter rope or cord is also used. The loop will move from side to side during cornering, thus cleaning your hub.
another good option for the tailgate is an old blanket
Or a towel to soak up anything off your bike if it was wet.
I use a moving blanket
Matt Bafundo or large towel

If u have a schrader valve pump, but need to fill up a tire with a presta valve you can cut the top off of a dust cap and use that as an adapter for the schrader pump.
loved the tailgate guard one 😂😂😂😂
The "Dakine" truck cover hack made my day!
I'm building the stand from your old bike hacks video and did a bunch of other stuff. Thanks from a new biker!
I used an old mtb derailleur as a chain tensioner for my street trials bike to fix the uneven tension problem I was having.
That’s effective!
That quick link hack is amazing mate. I'm definitely keeping some in my bars from now on.
Thanks for the bike hacks, Seth! I love your videos. I think i'll use an old rug for the truck's tailgate.
Straight off the STS live stream to a SBH video. Way to start an evening!
Congrats on the move, can't wait to come visit and put that dope shuttle rig to work!! Wish Drama the best of luck in his new endeavor for me! I would have never guessed Cat food > human food

Keep up with the videos, they are great!
When you are wearing a hydration pack, sometimes you will have some time between sips, which means when you go to take another drink it will be warm or even hot for the first bit then cool down as you drink. In order to prevent this when you are done having a drink, blow back into your pack, not a lot just until you hear bubbles then stop to prevent swelling. This will keep ALL the water nice and cold👌🏻👌🏻
nice!!!! great hack
tyson stone nice hack. I don't know why I didn't ever think of that!
Yaron Amir why are you wearing that satanic symbol?
We do that up here in the North Country during winter fat bike rides to keep the hose from freezing. Start with hot water too.
I followup channel. But I think u need new original material. This video is lame for old school cats...
I'm from Brazil and love your videos Seth, keep up the good work!

Such a great video. New to MTB and the channel. Learning so much so quickly! Thanks! 🤟🏻

Keep up the video. I used a lot of your bike hacks since watching. alloy bars end the hidden note, buying a dmn dropper and after watching this video this morning a little lemon juice in my camel pack to help with rubber taste nice one thanks Seth.
Dakine pad was so damn rad!
I like the custom cardboard on the tailgate! Very stylish.. love it
I LOVE your bike hack videos!
Instead of using energy gels, I robbed my nearby McDonalds for grape jam
Great idea.
I also grab the Peanut Butter, relishes, ketchups and whatever I can stomach from Dennys and restaurants.
Also can buy from restaurant/bulk food suppliers by the box.
I was loled off the trail when I used Squeeze-Cheeze tubes, but I was first! (To the bathroom).
Stay gold.
😂 lol 😂
5:27 the scissors made me cringe
I DIDNT EVEN SEE THAT EW
ТРИ ПОЛОСКИ me to
I just came down here to find this exact comment.
me too
How?
Well I am 45 so this rubber on the hub trick is at least 40 years old, still rocking bicycles like you seems to enjoy a lot!
Since the video aired I’ve always cleaned my chain with toothbrushes and put a lemon in my bottles. Toothbrushes are great for cassette cleaning as well.
Yay, seth got a sponsorship!
its a referral link to squarespace, just like when you click on an amazon product in the description, he gets a cut of any money you spend on that site, its a pretty basic way for youtubers to make money
Jake Cremean actually it's just a sponsorship.
Seth's Bike Hacks glad I was wrong I got a reply from Seth!
“You can even customise it to look like the real ones”
*sprays the word dakine on a piece of cardboard*
“Function, economy, and style.”
Improvise, Adapt, Overcome...
wow! you said what seth said in the video your so funny.
805skylar thank you!
LOL
Just started watching your videos. I don't normally comment, but just gotta say that I really enjoy your content!
Use a cut inner tube tied down with zipties as a chainstay protector.
Works for me👍
Had that for years on my old bike. New one has a decent integrated protector as standard
"this whole box was 1.50"
not anymore...
The strange moment when it was both my favorite and also most useless hack...
Loved the Dakine tailgate protector! Laughed so hard!
love it, bike hacks. especially chilling your hydration bladder.
The hub clean trick was with nylon cord. 3/8 soft nylon cord cut to about 6 or 7 inches. Loop it around the hub and then electric tape the ends together like a mouth harp or Ankh. That was a thing in the 70's on our bikes. You's have to use a bit more rope on the brake hubs and Sturmey-Archer hubs if they're still around. It would never get clean around the oil hole though.
Love the cardboard truck protector, that had me laughing!
My hacks
Wrap a tube around the chain stay
Rotate your tires if you run the same front and back because rears normally wear out faster
if you Carry a spare tube and pump throw some zip ties and electrical tape in your bag for any use
make a first aid/patch kit and put it under the seat
use bike shops suspension pumps for free if you have a coil fork and just got a dropper post like me lol
Victor Giannella but then you end up with two worn out tyres at the same time. I'd rather get a new one on the front when the rear wears out and put the old front one on the rear. That way I always have a good tyre up front which is better for control.
+ride pnw nope either work.
Ride PNW depends on which version of english you use but we all know tyre is the correct way :P
Ok ok 😫
Actually you really need to have good traction on your front tire. Putting the worn out rear tire at the front would not be a good idea. If you want to save some money on buying tires, when the rear worns out you change it with the front (good) one, and then you buy a new front tire, so only the rear one ends up in the garbage.
Hay Seth, I remember you did a video on bike hacks, on the screw on grips and the tooth brush cleaning the Chain,,,, the grips are awsome!!! And the tooth brush cleaning the chain!! My bmx bike chain runs SMOOOOTH !!! Thanks so much!!!!
Honestly the toothbrushes work a treat!!! I've been watching this channel for years now.. I use most the hacks and they are so good
If you want an extremely tough, durable, and high capacity camel back, go with a military grade one. They hold like two gallons of water and are like stupid strong and durable. They cost $30-60.
The biking ones are far better because the weigh less
can I have a link?
@@kacperolszewski3775 Actually... They really don't. The biking one is only a bit lighter.
@@kacperolszewski3775 We got a weight weenie over here bois.
You know what you can do if you're so concerned with weight?
Just dehydrate dummy.
Use book covering clear contact protect the parts on your bike you don't even know it's there well you do but no one else does
You are one of the coolest tubers I've ever watched
I think a good hack to spread around is when you’re replacing a spoke you can use the broken one to prevent losing it in the rim by threading it halfway to hold in in place while you thread the new one on. Idk about you, but before I learned this from my friend I lost many spokes to the abyss of my rim (much like a pick being dropped into an acoustic guitar).
Use a memory foam bath mat from Walmart for a tailgate protector..
Please post more like you used to
I agree! The only reason the posts slowed down was my move. Pretty soon there will be more videos than ever.
Love your vidoes and tricks for MTB stuff. Anders from Denmark
Love that sick DAKINE tailgate. Very stylish
Buy 5 lilter of degreaser for a couple of bucks and put it in an empty muc off bottle 2 to secure your wheels take the quick release squeawer out and watch them try and ride away. 3 use an old inner tube to protect your chain stay. 4 if you have a rounded of bolt use a little bit of tin foil at the end of your allen key seth please give me a shout out
Atlantic Rider I'll sure try out the aluminum foil one, seems like a good hack!
Take them fully out if you have to take a quick break
The cardboard trick is used in India very frequently
I bet that almost every Indian have watched it once in his life time
It's preetly called jugad in Hindi
Yeah
I do the same trick with the tailgate except I use moving blankets. Works great!
Great Idea using the pedal as a bottle opener for beers and soda after a ride. I have also run into that problem so I bought a StemCAPtain bottle opener and mounted it on my stem.
Quite a few pedals have it as a design feature/marketing gimmick as standard!
At 5:27 i almost had a heart attack
Hey Seth, Santa Cruz Bronson/5010 or YT Capra/Jeffsy for trail riding, occasionally bike parks?
Anthony Marinov Bronson all the way
Anthony Marinov I have the Santa Cruz Bronson, I'll leave it at that
Yo that soda technique was awesome! I did it with some soda and it worked! Thanks Seth!
These are great tips thanks! 👍
3:03 honey is very useful to increase your sugar level
It doesn't increase it
2:14 is that ur daughter or son?
Zainon Awang no
I think random guy
I was thinking the same thing as you
@@mondragon6434 same

Nah just some random kid knocking over his $5000 bike
That cardboard pickup protector was the funniest shit I ever seen. Lol Dakine!
Well done sir.

Damn, i wish i wrote that
i wish i wrote all of this
I wish I wrote that AND my name was Honey Badger

Seth's backpack must be really heavy.
Hacks and humor, great combo
I've done the ice hack for years. We used to put a piece of Velcro loosely on our hubs when we were kids.
5:10 I did the same with the tape, it works a lot better
3:05 they also have honey in sticks
Not sure if they are still around but 60 years ago everyone used pipe cleaners to wrap around the hub to keep it clean. They were sold by tobacconists to clean pipe stems and incorporate a wire running through the centre of a fluffy "string" so it was easy to wrap it around the hub and secure it. Worked very well. (bit of oil helped keep the chrome on the hub go rusty - guess everything is alloy or plastic now)
Very entertaining Seth! Keep it up.
Ha. Good luck finding a house in Asheville :(
I'm all moved in! I just need to unpack all my stuff and get the shop set up. Videos from NC are coming...
Lol well that was fast! Can't wait to see more how to vids from the trails up there.

Velcro strap works very well on hubs to keep them clean! Found out back in the 80's on my bmx bikes
I used a hockey skate lace to keep the hubs on my bmx clean and it worked amazingly 10/10 highly recommend
