    Obviously shipping is a major part of just about every fandom that exists, especially these days, but I think you’d be hard pressed to find a ship that affected its show’s narrative more than Tweek X Craig in South Park. Okay don’t quote me on that I’m not too invested in the world of shipping, but what I DO know is that after relative obscurity in the fandom at large, Matt and Trey caught wind of the passion fans had for the “Creek” ship as it was called, and would ya believe it, they canonized it. And not just canonized, they managed to take this unlikely fandom pairing and develop it into genuinely one of the sweetest relationships South Park has ever seen. So today let’s talk about not only the history of Tweek and Craig, but why it’s such a great and beloved relationship.

      I went in with zero expectations, fully expecting to be baited. "J/k no homo" and arbitrary same-sex couples crafted purely for the sake of pandering were a dime a dozen by then, so I was already prepared to sigh and shrug over this, despite my love of South Park. In the end, though, I thought their crack at yaoi was all in good fun, and appreciated the open ending to Tweek x Craig (the nature of their relationship at the time was up to interpretation. Is it real? Is it fake? Stay tuned!) I speculated that it was real rather than fake, given the subversive style of Trey and Matt's comedy. That being said, when Put it Down came out a couple years later, THAT cemented Creek not only as real but objectively the best couple in the show, at least in my opinion. To this day, it blows my mind. I absolutely love it.

      I'm so happy you shared this insight because that episode helped me in my personal life, too. The writing in Put it Down is sublime. It's an episode I wish I could thank Trey and Matt for personally. It's one of my all-time favorite episodes in anything. Let's even put aside the fact that they're in a homosexual relationship or any hot-button political topics tackled at the time. I think anyone, regardless of any label or identity we have, can learn great lessons from Tweek and Craig if we're experiencing any strain in our relationships, romantic or otherwise. In contrast with the highly toxic relationship of Cartman and Heidi, we ALL can learn the value of listening closely, communicating clearly, resolving issues productively, being honest with what scares and frustrates us, challenging preconceived notions, venturing out of our comfort zones, emotionally supporting our loved ones, and putting our damn phones down when it's time to, all through Craig's efforts and Tweek's insight in the end. Tweek calming down and coming up with a productive solution to assuage his anxieties, rather than being consumed by them and playing the victim (as Cartman would have, for example), is so inspiring. It's an excellent narrative in conflict resolution and supporting those whom we love that will always be relevant. I can't praise it highly enough.

You just think two characters would look good together and then you get lost on the possibilities. A lot of people do that with friendships instead of ships, they think two characters, even from different franchises, would get along well and they project their idea of how their friendship or just platonic relationship would be like, mostly with a bit of comedy sometimes

      Its a girl thing. You know how dudes see porn and go "YES! HOT! MUST FAP NAO!" Girls don't react like that. We like a little story and build up in our porn. There needs to be a relationship, a WHY behind the fucking, then the fucking. Shipping is thus mostly done by female viewers who find a character cute or attractive and want to have some fun but need that emotional weight to their fantasy. Younger female viewers will do this too, but without the porn part. It's just a normal part of growing up. Some guys are like that too, but not many.

    I think that I've become too poisoned by stupid fandom discourse, because to watch a video that was just genuinely so positive and excited about Craig and Tweek was so refreshing! It's hard to believe how many people hate on the pairing, trying to convince people that it's "toxic" and "problematic," despite the fact that they are shown supporting and learning from each other. It's a really sweet ship and I think your video did a great job covering it! :)

      Fandom discourse can be so exhausting, especially when you're constantly seeing something you love get skewered by critics and naysayers. That doesn't mean your own opinion is invalid, though. Far from it. Next time you see someone asserting toxicity in Tweek and Craig, just be like "I see your Tweek and Craig and raise you a Heidi and Cartman/Kyle and Cartman/Randy and Sharon/Stan and Wendy/Stan and Kyle/Mr. Garrison and Mr. Slave/etc." if even just in the privacy of your own mind. Once you start comparing them to all other couples and even friendships in the show, that's where you can assure yourself that Creek is one of the healthier, if not healthiest ones. It's South Park, though. There are no perfect characters or couples. If there were, that would be painfully boring.

Yes ofc this was played for jokes but this relationship developed craig and Tweek as characters. They represented a healthy relationship and they weren’t stereotypes. The episode Put it Down completely sold me on this ship because they portrayed a couple working out a pretty serious problem that caused conflict. Craig found a good way to comfort Tweek and Tweek truly being heard calmed him down enough to now consider the straightforward advice Craig was trying to give.

    I remember vividly what it was like to watch Tweek x Craig because I just had to pause every couple of minutes from laughter, it holds such a huge place in my heart because it was the first canon ship that ever made me realize how nice it is to see this idealization turn into something more. Imperfect but genuine, there's a lot of love in this fandom for them and the endless canon and fanon content is so heartwarming, it's ridiculous.
    Though nothing really beats the angst from the Tweek x Craig episode and hearing "Say something I'm giving up on you" while the town collectively mourns, I was cry laughing at the absurdity that they got the legit song in the episode (great song cover on this btw! Almost thought you played the song as is)
    Then the Put it Down episode is so human, the thing is they're both so different in terms of personality but they care about each other. Their fights stems from love and the resentment of how difficult it is to love someone, in TFBW game they even go to couple's therapy and heck even before you do the side quest if you talk to them individually they ask how the other is doing. They hold concern for the other but has too much pride to back down from their fight but if urged on to reconcile, they try! I love them so much!

    "Put It Down" is such an enjoyable episode, largely because of just how likable Tweek and Craig are as a couple.

    South Park is known to make commentary on a lot of things, never in a million years would I think they discuss yaoi and turn this ship into a healthy, realistic and wholesome couple. I remember when the Tweek x Craig episode first came out, my jaw was on the floor in shock and embarrassment (as someone who used to spend time on tumblr in the yaoi fandom) but then watching the ending made me have hope that they creators knew how to tell a good subculture story correctly, I freaking love this show

    I don't watch much of south park. No reason, just didn't have the channel. But might have to pull up this episode. The play on fandom, fan art, and the like seems hilarious and accurate and the fact that the producers worked a conversation about it into cannon and continued the storyline without making fun of it is hilarious and smart. Love it.

    their relationship is probably one of the most if not THE most endearing i've watched in television. TFBW really develops them as a couple too, and the interactions when they're fighting either against or with one another make the game all the more entertaining to play. tweek and craig truly have something special and i can't wait to see where the pairing is taken in the future (if it is focused on in upcoming seasons anyway)

    I love that when Craig is talking to Tweek or greeting him he always calls him babe, they are so cute in the superhero episodes & in the fractured butthole video game cut scenes where the other boys ask them where their boyfriend is like it became so natural but not ramming it down your throat it just kinda happened and is a part of the show now.

    I like that tweek and Craig show understanding towards eachother and the communication in their relationship. It’s so crazy that 4th grades can do that but high schoolers can’t (sarcastic comparison) I love them so much and I really love how the show has normalized it, it was very shocking to me to see how normal it was in the show and especially how supportive the other characters in the show were. They are arguably the best thing to come out of South Park.

  • @ComfyMarius
    @ComfyMarius Před 2 lety +7

    The best thing is that this is the only couple where Matt Stone basically talks to himself. So Creek scenes or even whole episodes are basically a break for Trey, which is why the first Creek episode probably had a Cartman subplot, besides from comic relief
